61. Useless distractions and organizational errors

The same night when he was told about the upcoming battle he rushed into the mercenary building, now leaving his careful side behind except for the part where he cloaked his appearance in order to keep himself safe and free from any possible consequences.

He decided to go to the documents immediately while fighting some of the members of the corps that were on guard duty. To make himself appear less suspicious he would burn everything once he had found what he wanted and luckily these guys were very organized, they kept things with date and as Gabriel remembered the day of the attack clearly, it didn’t take too long after he found the document that would prove of disprove everything.

But he didn’t have time to check it then, he wasn’t going to be able to fight everyone, so he started to burn things while keeping himself and the document intact. After the fire had gained enough traction, he decided that it was time to skedaddle from the building and head to his home, not before changing clothes for some that didn’t smell like smoke.

Gabriel believed that he finally had some time to see the truth, but he would do so in a hidden place. There was no rule against leaving the camp before the battle, so he moved to his house where he was met with the bodyguard who didn’t comment anything but opened him the door and looked at him with an emotionless face.

Until he stopped paying him attention, he wouldn’t have a chance to read the contents that he desired. And Gabriel knew that it wouldn’t be easy to get him off his tail, due to the high likelihood of him being hired by his boss to observe him for suspicious behavior.

And so, to prevent suspicious, he went to his room and laid on the bed, attempting to sound and seem asleep but secretly staying awake. And it worked because after a few minutes of him being watched, he heard the man not only leave the room he was in, but he also left the home, probably to inform to the boss of what he’d done. Or maybe Gabriel was being too paranoid, and he’d be proven wrong. It all depended on the contents of the document he was opening now…

And as he was going through the document, his hands trembled, and his teeth churned. His face began trembling as he realized how much had been kept from him. And how much he could have changed things had he known better.

But before having an outburst in his own property he decided to play it smart. He would make him pay. He didn’t know who the mysterious two payers were and he probably would never know but he knew someone who knew that this was important for him and had kept it for himself…

Now that he thought about it, Kupi most likely knew about it too, as he boasted of having great connections. Why hadn’t he told him anything? Perhaps he had been tested the day he came to the restaurant to see if he was mature enough to hear the truth and he wouldn’t go rushing to the enemy or perhaps it wasn’t anything so complicated and Kupi simply didn’t have the information at the time.

He would get rid of the proof by eating the paper so that it’d dissolve in his stomach and his modus operandi was different from the man that had burned the place that document came from, even if both actions had been done by him.

He could spend the night thinking and planning different things to get back to his boss, though it’d be mostly a waste of time as his mind was already far too wasted to continue thinking efficiently. It was finally time to get a good night’s rest.

He was woken up the next day by the same person who had observed him the last night and even though Gabriel knew that he should stay composed he was shocked to see him… and so close to his face as well. He was bending his body 90° to greet Gabriel on his bed while standing up and keeping his back straight. Unnecessarily creepy, according to both Gabriel and his sister, who was woken daily in this manner.

- You are needed in the tents of the army. Something about you having a squad or something. I have already prepared breakfast to go, so you only need to grab it. – He calmly told Gabriel and then suddenly changed his tone to a stern one. – Now go! Don’t waste my time! – He said and pulled the bed sheets out of the bed.

Groggily Gabriel groaned and left the bed and suddenly felt very wet. Cold water had been thrown at him to wake him up and it did. But now he had to change clothes. After finally reaching the tents of the army he was greeted by some people in change who started explaining to him his new tasks.

Because he hadn’t participated on the main attack of the cube, he hadn’t experienced the battles and barely knew what had happened, so he was told that actually many people from their side had died, including many troop leaders. So, some talented and selected individuals would replace them.

But Gabriel believed that this was a trick to make him waste time watching over other people in order to make him stop his plans against his boss as they had found him out already. But he didn’t have any proofs and if he denied the request, it would only arouse suspicions.

- It’s an honor. But wouldn’t someone with more leadership skills be more appropriate? – Gabriel still made an attempt to exempt himself from the task, but it was immediately denied. Instead, he was praised for his humbleness and then shown where he needed to go to meet his subordinates.

But Gabriel wasn’t only trying to evade responsibilities, he really had no ideas how to order people around and this was his first experience. He hadn’t even read books about it, and he quickly observed how bad he was.

There was nothing he could do to improve quickly. Maybe ask other people, but that would take precious free time and he wanted to be fully focused on a good plan to get revenge and get away with it.

On the same day, inside one of the tents, the one in charge of this whole operation was constantly being informed of what happened and what could happen. Not everything got through to him, of course, as it was filtered by his assistants.

Many documents entered the tent during the whole day and the assistants had turns during the day so that they wouldn’t tire themselves out and managed to make the best decisions. But they were human, so they made mistakes. This time it was a mistake for him, his boss and the entire operation, but for Gabriel it couldn’t have happened better.

During the morning a report had come about Gabriel and the likelihood of him being a danger to the operation, possibly revolting against them. The person who had checked this letter didn’t really know Gabriel, but in the report some of his characteristics were written, such as his mission history, where he lived, and the measures already taken against him.

But there was no record of him being angry at his boss as not only was this quite a private matter between the two of them, so almost no one knew and at the same time the person who wrote the original description of Gabriel didn’t know about the lost house of Gabriel due to the fire because when he was interviewed to make his profile he wasn’t only partnered with quite a new guy, Gabriel was also quickly called to his boss’ office quite soon, so the questions had to be ended prematurely.

After Gabriel was given his army, a new report came and the situation was classified as mostly safe, because Gabriel had always completed his missions so if he had some people to control, he would do so.

This meant that Gabriel could indeed spend his time preparing a perfect plan and although there wasn’t enough time to do everything, he ended up quite pleased with how it ended up being. Out of spite, he would use fire once again, starting from inside the city, but directing the winds towards the cube so that the army would get engulfed in flames.

His sister also had an escape route which she would be taking before anything happened and she wouldn’t only be far from the city, she’d stay far from the ensuing battle as well, just as Gabriel wanted, to keep his sister safe.
