Chapter 20 – The Ice Boss

Chapter 20 – The Ice Boss

Classes have different abilities and different keystone traits. One of the more desired classes is the Tamer, which finds monsters and tames them to act as their minions and pets. An adventuring tamer is often called upon by townsfolks and farms to help keep their area secure. A monster’s senses are often more sensitive than the tamers. And if they lose a minion in a monster on monster fight, they can always get more.

#Demetri’s Perspective

He started down the stairs after he felt the chill start to leave the air. With a final wave to the Storm Folk, he headed down to see how successful Warnik was. It had taken a few hours, but the cold wasn’t as biting as it was before.

Warnik was coming down the hallways towards the stairs when he finished descending them. He looked a little worse for wear, but at least he had finished the first part of the plan.

“Yo, Warnik! Looks like you did it. You ran into some troubles from the looks of it.”

“Yeah. The beasts didn’t exactly ignore me. But they had to get within five-ten feet to see me.” The large barbarian responded, and let out a tired sigh. “I think we just have the boss room to clear out, and then we can claim the world stone.”

Dimitri nodded his head, “What about any of the monsters that had been left behind? They might still be wandering around the level.”

“They might be, but the level has heated up a lot since the last generator was destroyed. They might not be able to survive in the warmer temperatures.”

The warlock nodded his head, “The boss will still be there, so we’ll have to take it out. It should also be cold and water-based, Hermosa didn’t say much about it.”

“No, she didn’t. She told us where the boss room was, and where the secondary boss room was that has the world stone. I just have a suspicion about it.”

“What’s that, Warnik?”

“If it’s still there, then no-one has claimed it. And you have to go through the boss room to get to it. Why hasn’t it been claimed?”

“Maybe the dungeon has never been conquered before?”

“No. Hermosa said that the magic would be disrupted or disabled when the dungeon was conquered, which means she probably experienced it.”

Demitri thought about the question, and looked over at Warnik, “What are you thinking?”

“Either the world stone returns after a certain condition is met. Or the secret door to the world stone chamber is only able to be opened when the main boss is still active.”

“Warnik, are you suggesting we claim the world stone before we fight the main boss and conquer the dungeon?”

“Yes, I am.”

“If the main boss follows us while we fight the second boss, we’ll have a hard time.”

“I know, Dimitri. But I don’t want to do this dungeon a second time. If we find we can’t open the secret door while the first boss is active then we’ll defeat it and hope we can go to the second boss. I might just be paranoid. And you know what I say about being paranoid.”

“I know. ‘Just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean the world isn’t out to get you.’”

The barbarian winked at him, “Glad you learned something, from this old man. I do have one suggestion.”

“What’s that?”

“If we find our way to the second boss before killing the first one, I go fight it solo while you distract the first one?”

Dimitri thought about that for a moment, Warnik didn’t seem like a glory hound for him, and he was always careful. This seemed a bit out of character for him, “Why?”

“If the first boss is purely magic, and elemental based then I might accidentally kill it just by touching it.”

“Oh, that makes sense. We’ll go with your plan and see what we have to fight.”

They approached the boss room, unlike the other boss rooms, this one had a door they had to open before they could enter. The warlock sighed as he looked at it. “Think it will close when we go in?”

“Of course, Dimitri. Wouldn’t want the people to get almost to the end and then run away, right? Once we go in, we’ll have to beat whatever is there or die trying.”

“Hey! Don’t raise the death flags yet.”

“Not my intention.” Warnik moved to the large door and started to pull it open.

“Think we could wedge something under the door to keep it open?” The magic-user asked.

“We could try to find something, but I’m not sure what.” Warnik looked at him, “We always used pitons in tabletop sessions. Do you think we have some in the supplies? I don’t remember us getting any mountain climbing gear.”

“We were a little short on cash when we set out. We’re better now of course.” He said defensively.

“I know. And they didn’t have an ‘adventurer’s kit’. That’s usually how we picked them up in the tabletop game: One Adventurer’s Kit Please.” Warnik sighed and shook his head, “We’re delaying. We’re psyching ourselves out.”

Dimitri paused for a bit, “We’re like a bunch of noobs who’ve never done fought a challenge before.”

“Yes. You every see Conan the Barbarian?”

“The new one or the old one?”

“The old one.”

“No, never.”

“There’s a perfect quote for this. ‘Do you want to live forever?’ Let’s go and do this, Dimitri.”

They moved stepped over the threshold, and the door closed quickly behind them. It didn’t swing shut, it just reappeared behind them. The mage lights in the room flared to brightness, showing off a dome-like room, with several pillars.

They heard a hissing sound coming from the central pillar and Dimitri saw a many-legged, blue serpent wrapped around it. With a giant, lizard-like head at the end of the snake-like body. From the distance, the head looked to be as big as he was.

[Beithir – Boss]

“It’s a Beithir, Warnik.”

“Hope it hasn’t seen us yet. Though how it could miss us I don’t know. Stay near the wall, and circle to the secret door.”

“One second, Warnik. I should have cast this earlier. Eyes of Osmods // Find the breeze // Reveal the hidden… .” Casting the spell did two things. It revealed a glowing spot along the wall, halfway around the chamber. And it triggered the boss fight. A roar was heard from the blue serpent, and the boss slithered down the pillar and moved in to attack.

“It’s right there, Warnik!” He pointed with his staff at the hidden door and turned to look at the boss as it moved forward. “” He spun his staff in an arc between the two adventurers and the boss.

“Got’cha,” His companion moved quickly to where the secret door was and started to push on all the bricks that made up the wall, hoping to find a trigger to open up the door.

Dimitri concentrated on keeping the wall of wind in place as the boss moved to attack. Its great maw opened up and lighting and cold poured from it aiming at the two. He felt the lighting go over his body as the wind wall did nothing to protect him from it. It took a great amount of will power to keep himself upright, and to keep concentrating on the spell. Fortunately, the blast of cold didn’t make it through the shield he put up.

“[You have some magics, very tasty. I will enjoy your blood as it flows from my teeth and down my tongue, mageling!]”

You have been shaken by the taunt of the mighty Beithir. Cower mortal, you shall not survive. You cannot run, better give up now.

“Fucking system. Warnik have you found the door yet?”

“No, I haven’t found the switch yet, or button.”

“Time for Plan B?”

“Not yet, let me try something, Dimitri.” He heard a roar from his companion, and then a loud thunk, followed by the sound of rock scraping against rock.

“Ok, I’m through.” He felt Warnik grab the back of his robes and drag him into the newly opened passage. The serpent was moments behind, bursting through his wind wall and impacting against the dungeon wall.

“[The world stone! You shall claim it, and then I will break your bones if you survive!]”

The passage was barely big enough for Warnik to stand in, it also made a good tunnel for the monster to breathe down. The constrained environment worked both ways. They couldn’t avoid the breath weapon of the monster. It also allowed for, “” to be cast, and fill the passage, to block the breath attack. He strengthened the shield and watched his mana tick down as he blocked the passage, Three seconds had cost him about a fifth of his mana. He wasn’t going to be able to keep this up for long.

“Run Warnik. We need to get out of the passage.”

The barbarian ran down the passage towards the next boss chamber. They quickly moved to the side out of the passage to avoid the next breath attack. When they were safe, what they saw was not what they were expecting.

A pillar rose from the center of the room to the dome ceiling above. The pillar was not made of rock but crystal, with a cubic rock rotating a few feet off the floor in the middle of the glowing shaft of light. That was the World Stone they were seeking, but the rest of the room was not what they expected.

They were expecting a combat arena, instead, they found what could be considered a pleasure room. With silks draped like curtains separating different areas of the room, ropes tied to the central pillar to support the curtains. What sounded like water was running in one of the areas, and they heard a musical voice.

“[Just a minute, you caught me in the bath.]” The voice was higher pitched, a light soprano.

Dimitri looked startled, and actually blushed as he looked over at Warnik, “Umm… She said we caught her in the bath.”

“The bath? That… Um…. Nevermind. Just tell her we’ll wait. No need to be rude.”

“Aww come on, it’s a man’s duty to peek!”

“What are you? Twelve? No, if she’s a boss monster, no need to antagonize her more, we still have that serpent to deal with.” His companion just shook his head.

“[Oh I don’t mind if you peek.]” Dimitri took a step forward, almost compelled to, but Warnik’s hand landed on his shoulder.

“No.”

He was about to shake off the hand, but the compulsion to go peek went away. He looked back towards Warnik and then nodded. “I think you’ll have to keep your hand there.”

“[You’re no fun!]” They heard the sound of splashing water, then the sound of cloth against skin, and feathers beating in the wind.

A figure appeared above the curtains, dressed in silks. The female figure was revealed by the single strapped halter top that covered the oversized breasts. It left her belly exposed down to the low slung skirt that hung over her hips. The black feathery wings didn’t take from her beauty and just enhanced it. Her exposed skin was pale, almost to the point of being translucent. When she opened her mouth, the fangs were the only thing that took from her form.

[Fallen – Vampire – Boss]

“[Only two? One so level to be laughable, but the other… What are you?]” She asked pointing towards Warnik, her voice shifted from seductive to curious.

“[A half-demon? And a… Could it be? A mountain man? Interesting…]”

“Um, Warnik, she’s giving us the once over I think.”

“What gave you that idea?” The sarcasm was dripping from the barbarian’s voice.

“[One that can talk, and one that can’t.]” She turned to look fully at the warlock, and threw her head back and laughed.

“Hey what’s so funny?” Dimitri demanded.

“[Undocumented Import! That’s a laugh. You are not humans, you were summoned illegally.]” She laughed again.

“[Fear not, mortals. I have been here long enough that the contract is void. Sealed in ice I was. I am not compelled to fight you. After all, you are on my side.]”

“What do you mean? On your side…” Dimitri was confused.

“[Why yes.]” The winged vampire moved closer to the two and landed, hooking her coiled whip to her belt. “[Half-demons and Mountain Men are outcasts from the treaties of light. And I have you to thank for freeing me from the ice. How did you do it?]”

“Umm… Warnik here destroyed all the cold generators.”

She turned and looked at the barbarian, Dimitri could feel him jump as the vampire smiled at him. “[So I have you to thank. Come, I think you deserve a special reward, and I haven’t had some fun for a while.]”

Dimitri couldn’t help to laugh, as he relayed the intent to his companion. The forsaker just shook his head, and said, “Sorry, but if I understand your offer I’d have to decline. I’m already taken.”

The smile turned to a frown, as the warlock repeated, and then she smiled again, “[I think I might change your mind later. Loyalty is a tasty feeling, and I think I’d like to taste yours. No matter, my contract is done. You are not servants of the pact of light. Come. Claim the World Stone and announce the Summit.]” She paused and looked between the two, “[First you must pass a test, and prove your worth by taming the magic holding the stone in place.]”

“Hey Warnik, she says we must tame the magic holding the stone in place. Do you think I can try first?”

“Sure, go ahead. If not I’ll try.”

“[You need to be a mage of the highest order to tame this magic if you cannot do it your barbarian companion has no hope.]”

“We’ll see, do you have a name by the way?” He asked the fallen vampire.

“[Bold of you to ask a lady for her name without introducing yourself first.]”

“I’m Dimitri, and my companion is Warnik.”

“[You can call me Kali.]”

He approached the World Stone and held out his hands to the glowing crystal that held it suspended. He felt the magic coursing through the pillar and around the cube that spun. The vibrations flowed through his soul and his mana.

He could affect it a little, and then he visualized the wave. He pushed back against the wave and watched the return waves cancel out mana coming towards him, making it appear flat in his mind. He pushed back a bit more with his mind. The bounce increased the size of the wave almost pushing him back. He still pushed on until he was in tune with the mana, and then like a lock he settled into place. The wave bounced back to the pillar and it shattered.

“[Congratulations, the world stone is yours, now I shall leave and watch your careers with interest. Especially you, Sir Warnik who is already taken]” She spread her wings and flew down the tunnel.
