White Lich
Clerical work and common sense.

Clerical work and common sense.

”Of course your miss can work here. Because she is blessed by Harjan himself, there is now way we can deny her.”

The head priestess of the church looked quite ecstatic after Izumi asked her.

Izumi and me was inside the church which was about an kilometer away from his house. The church itself was big enough to fit 200 people simultaneously and was fitted with several shrines dedicated to different gods. The biggest shrine was at the altar which was dedicated to the Vi the Godess of Fertility.

”Harjan?”

Izumi looked puzzled. I guess he never bothered with religion since he came here.

”Harjan, the Holy Crescent god! Lotus got his sacred golden symbol on her forehead, and her very being is a conduit of his holyness!”

Be careful priestess, any more and I may die of embarassment. My face screamed: ”Please, get me out of here...” I still do not know how I should feel that gods personally have taken notice of me yet.

”So tomorrow?”

He then asked her.

”Yes, she can begin tomorrow.”

The priestess eagerly answered.

”Also she will get her own set of robes for work.”

Then she dug up a fairly unused set of robes which was my sight. It looked a lot like what nuns wear on earth but they was a lot less modest. The robes exposed the upper part of the bust and showed off the hips on the sides. Also hair was allowed to be shown, but according to tradition it would be braided well. I guess this is because the Vi was the main god of this church, who is all about fertility.

”Before I work... What are my responsibilities?”

I quickled asked the priest who got into lecture mode in an instant.

”You come in here at the first bell to meet with us. Then we will have tea together and discuss the daily agenda.

After our meeting is done, your job as a novice will be to see if any people need help in the church. You are not allowed to accept any other request, except for accepting tithes and going to houses to perform prayers.

Once the second bell rings it is time for lunch. You can either eat our communal lunch or take with your own.

Then you will spend the rest of your time until the third bell rings, ensuring the garden and cemetery are maintained.”

The head priestess was quite thorough in her explanation.

”How long does it usually take get promoted?”

I curiously asked her.

”Depending on your talent, anything from one month to ten years.”

Sheesh! She is not sugarcoating any of this!

”Alright, I got it. See you tomorrow!”

With a wave to her I turned around and began to hover out. The priestess then gave me a serious look.

”Oh, and avoid doing that during work. It will scare the faithful!”

Oops! Looks like I can’t be lazy then.

I then spent rest of the day lazing around. Gotta use the last of my free time efficently. Nothing of note happened, except for Nyaya botching her cleaning by tipping over the container holding all dust. Truly an uneventful day.

The next day after being literally dragged out of the bed by Nino, I arrived at the church. Because I am new I had not yet recieved my own key to enter the side entrance. As I waited I felt how cold the breeze was this morning. Is it autumn already? I had not paid attention to the seasons ever since I arrived to this world after all.

”...KNOCK KNOCK...”

I cried out as I knocked the door for what felt like the thousandth time. Then I heard rushed steps from the other side, and then door opened.

”I am deeply sorry! Forgive me!”

The young robed man begged me. I sighed.

”No matter, I am new here so let’s go.”

The man nodded and led me to the meeting room which now had at least eight people in it. Only three chairs was free. As I entered the room I noticed how the atmosphere changed. From being cold and quiet to warm. Everyone except the head priest looked at me with great curiousity. Am I a Zoo animal or something?

”Ah, welcome Lotus. She will be working her. Her master Izumi gave her permission to do so.”

Damn it, she is as honest as ever. Not even hiding the fact that I am a slave to Izumi. All the men started talking between themselves now. In total there was four men which made the gender balance a little skewed now. After a moment they stopped talking.

”Welcome Lotus, our new novice. We are looking forward to work with you.”

One male priest which looked a little out of place with the rest said to me. I do not know why, but I got a feeling something is off with him. Am I unfair to him now, by judging on his looks?

Then I greeted all other priests and clerics before finally settling myself on a chair. I decided to sit next to the man who let me in.

”The morning meeting has now started.”

The head priestess loud and clear exclaimed. Then she rang a bell in her hand.

”First thing on todays agenda is; Lotus.”

All the other priests and clerics looked at me then with anticipation.

”From today she will start as a novice here. But because she is blessed by Harjan and already picked a patron god, we will skip the introductory lesson about tthem.

But her worldly knowledge and religious theory is lacking. I know that because Mistral, her patron god herself gave me a revelation this morning. Lotus must had done something special in order to get the personal attention of an god.”

Tell me all about it... I got scolded hard by her! She must be laughing her ass off in her plane now.

”So her schedule will be to help out in the church in the morning, and then after lunch she will spend the remaining time until the third bell rings studying.”

And here I thought I would escape school. I finished college on Earth after all, so the will to study is not fully there.

I feel like the days are going to be long here...

Once she finished ranting off the days agenda, I introduced myself to my coworkers. I avoided talking with the creepy guy last. Most of the priests and priestesses looked well adjusted. Some lived in celibate meanwhile others had big families of up to ten children. They must really take Vis teachings seriously!

”Oh hi, my name is Lotus. My favorite things are reading books, drinking tea and coffee,”

I finally approached the guy whom gave me bad vibes.

”My pleasure. My name is Guy Kiles, on my free time I make sculptures and tend to the church cemetary.”

He do work even on his free time!?

”Also you are quite the stunning beauty, your master really lucked out~”

Then he gave me a smile, but also in it was a subtle hint of scheming.

”T- Th- Thanks!”

I stormed off then under the pretense of me needing to start early, so I can get better faster. Anything to get away from him.

Until lunch I spent most of the time collecting tithes from visitors. All the money went toward keeping the church operational. Then after lunch I spent time learning this worlds common sense.

A operational church is valuable after all in this world. Because churches was often the most convenient places if you wanted to get [Life Guidance]. In short life guidance means you can regret past life choices, and set yourselves on a new path. So if you have been a Fighter all your life you could pick the path of a Wizard. But the process is lossy, in the end you lose one third of your life experiences which is taken as a tithe by the gods. Also you still need to relearn your fighting and living style completely, not to mention completely regear yourself.

The crash course in common sense made me realize one thing: It is like the world is based off a tabletop game! Reminded me of it because all the nerds in school used to play them, in the school hallways during breaks. What next? Magical cards is a valid form of defense as well!?

Whatever, It is not like I can do anything about it. I am bound by the laws of this world.

Further thing I learned on common sense is that titles actually affect things. Like for example; If a man is recognized by enough people, or a god as the [Enemy of Mankind]. Then they would emit an aura of fear and hostility around them. It would essentially make life impossible for him in civilized society.

So in short, titles are a big deal.

And lastly. Monsters and half monsters are able to evolve by absorbing the magical power left by their prey, as the souls pass onto the afterlife. It is the same concept used for Classes. But unlike Classes, when monsters evolve their bodies completely restructure and because of that they are fully healed.

There have been cases of difficult but beatable monsters who has been on the verge of death, managing to kill off a hunter. Only to start evolving into a more powerful variant. Easy to say is that the monster became unbeatable for the current hunters, and it ended up in a party wipe.

This worlds common sense sure is scary!

After my first day of work I felt utterly tired. And it would take a week until I got my first payment. But the pay is pretty much just symbolical for me, Izumi take care of all my needs after all. I guess it is one perk of being a slave.

As for the creepy guy in the church? I thought nothing of it anymore. Maybe he just is that way.
