Prologue

“Faster, faster”. A cloud of dust could be seen upon the grasslands. A pair of riders were furiously galloping, with no heed for their horses. The poor mounts were already foaming at their mouths. It was a miracle that they were even able to stand, leave alone run at that pace. A pained look flashed across one of the riders’ face.

“Brother”, a delicate voice sounded.

“Stay with me. We are nearly free of their grasps”. A rougher voice answered

It was at this instant a low hum sounded out. It was an almost imperceptible hum. But just as this sounded, a look of panic could be seen on faces of the riders.

“No. No. Why is this happening”. Despair was evident in his voice.

“No…Brother. What do we do now?” The other rider’s voice asked, panic and fear suffusing that question. The man did not reply. With a resolute glint, he reined in his mount and jumped off it in one swift motion.

“No brother. I can’t go on alone. I will die with you. No more of this. “The other rider also moved to rein in and dismount. Just then, a strange contraption seemed to materialize in front of them. A group of men dressed in what could be called as a blood red uniform jumped out from that contraption.

A short, corpulent man dressed in white who seemed more a moving mountain of flesh than a man, started proclaiming loudly “ORDER. BY THE DECREE OF THE HOLY CHURCH, WE SHA...” However, for some reason, his voice abruptly stopped. As the uniformed soldiers stared in shock, a thin line of blood seemed to flow from the white robed man’s neck, before his entire head fell. At this moment, everyone finally noticed a small dagger in the hands of man that faced them.

“Forgive me, sister. I am sorry, but your time is not now”, as he spoke, he withdrew what seemed like a semicircular parchment from his coat.

“Stop. Stop. That is….no don’t do that. You will die” She screamed, fear and anger evident in that scream.

“Sorry sister. It had to be this way. Find our family. Don’t abandon them like how I had to abandon you now”. A sad smile could be seen on the man’s face, sorrow and pain evident.

“No. This is not the way. We can stil…”. Her scream was cut abruptly, as a brilliant flash of light seemed to illuminate the entire horizon. When that flash vanished, a man was left standing alone, in the middle of a patch of scorched earth.

“Come, come. Today it shall rain blood. I haven’t painted this earth red in a long time. Hahaha”. There was no longer telling if there was any sanity left in that mad cackle.

“Dance with me, Veliadris. Today shall be our final dance. We will make the wind weep and the earth scream. We will paint with blood and decorate it with bones. Today, we will reap. Reap till there is none left”. Madness flickered in his eyes, as he withdrew a pair of curved swords from his pack.

Thus began what could only be described as a slaughter to end all slaughters, as a single man faced off against an entire legion. A feat that has never been repeated.
