Chapter 7: The Slime Siege

As dawn broke over the dense forest, Lavanya and Evrin were already awake, the last echoes of their serene exploration from the day before lingering in their minds like a gentle dream. However, the peace of the morning was soon to be interrupted by an encounter neither of them could have anticipated.

They broke camp early, the air crisp and filled with the light mist that rose from the forest floor as the sun's rays warmed the earth. Evrin packed away their minimal gear while Lavanya scouted the perimeter, her senses alert for any sign of the usual forest dwellers. But today, something unusual caught her attention.

A strange, squelching noise, soft and rhythmic, pulsed through the underbrush. Lavanya’s ears pricked up, and she crouched low, her eyes narrowing as she tried to pinpoint the source. Evrin noticed her posture and paused, his hand on the hilt of his makeshift weapon.

“What is it, Audrey?” he whispered, using the nickname born of earlier days, his eyes scanning the thick greenery.

Lavanya didn’t respond but instead moved cautiously towards the sound. As they pushed through a particularly dense thicket, the source of the noise became apparent. Before them lay a clearing, but unlike any other they had encountered. It was filled, almost completely, with an army of slimes—creatures as bizarre as they were dangerous.

The slimes were translucent and shimmered with an internal light that made them look like living, moving gelatin. They varied in size, some as small as a rabbit, others as large as a bear. The creatures seemed to pulse in unison, creating a hypnotic rhythm that was oddly mesmerizing.

Evrin’s grip tightened on his weapon, a mix of fascination and alarm crossing his face. “Slimes,” he muttered under his breath, recalling stories he had heard of such creatures. “Legends said they were harmless, but something tells me these are different.”

Lavanya hissed softly, a low, rumbling sound that served as a warning. Her body tensed, ready to spring into action at any moment. Evrin nodded, understanding the unspoken signal. They would have to fight their way through.

The first slime approached, its body undulating as it moved. It seemed curious, almost playful, but as it reached out a pseudopod towards Lavanya, it became clear that their intentions were not benign. Lavanya swiped at it with her claws, her strike passing through the gelatinous body with little effect. The slime, undeterred, reformed and advanced.

Evrin stepped forward, swinging his makeshift weapon down onto the slime. The impact caused the creature to shudder, but it quickly regained its shape, the cut closing up as if it had never been. “They regenerate,” Evrin said, stepping back to reassess their strategy.

With each passing moment, more slimes converged on their position, drawn by the commotion or perhaps by some unknown command. Lavanya and Evrin found themselves back-to-back, surrounded by the pulsing mass of creatures.

“We need to find a weakness,” Evrin said, panting slightly from the exertion. Lavanya, in response, darted forward, using her agility to her advantage. She leaped over a smaller slime, landing behind the larger ones, trying to draw some away from Evrin.

The tactic worked, but only momentarily. The slimes were relentless, their movements slow but persistent. They seemed to have no discernible sense, driven by instinct or a hive-like mind that made them formidable in their numbers.

As Lavanya and Evrin fought, they slowly made their way toward a large tree at the edge of the clearing. Lavanya’s idea was to climb, to gain a vantage point where they could perhaps hold the slimes at bay. But as Evrin boosted her up towards the lower branches, a massive slime launched itself towards the tree, its impact causing the ground to tremble.

Evrin barely dodged, rolling away from an incoming pseudopod. He looked up, seeing Lavanya safe for the moment, her gaze fixed on the creatures below. She meowed loudly, a sound that in their shared experiences Evrin had learned to interpret as a call to action.

Climbing to his feet, Evrin tried a different approach. He picked up a rock and threw it with all his might at a nearby slime. The rock sank into its body, and to his surprise, the slime quivered and began to dissolve slowly, its structure unable to reform.

“Physical force isn’t enough, but they can’t handle solid objects inside them!” Evrin yelled up to Lavanya, who watched intently from above.

Armed with this new knowledge, Evrin began to gather more rocks, throwing them into the mass of slimes. Each impact resulted in a slow dissipation of the attacked slime, but there were too many, and he was only one.

Lavanya leaped down, joining Evrin in the fray. She, too, started pushing debris—sticks, stones, anything she could find—into the slimes. Together, they created a small barrier of fallen slimes, but the others simply crawled over their fallen comrades, undeterred.

As they fought, the sun climbed higher, and the heat of the day began to intensify. Lavanya noticed that the slimes nearest the sunlit edges of the clearing were moving more slowly, their bodies starting to dry out and crack.

“The sun,” she meowed, pointing with her nose towards the clearing’s edge.

Understanding her hint, Evrin nodded. “We need to drive them into the light,” he concluded.

The battle raged on, each minute dragging into the next. Evrin and Lavanya, driven by desperation and a growing understanding of their foes, managed to herd a small group of slimes into the brighter parts of the clearing. These slimes faltered, their bodies losing their cohesive shape as the sun’s rays beat down upon them.
