Synopsis
Author’s Note: This story will make very little sense when read in the order of chapter release. I recommend starting with this Introduction.
A choose-your-own-adventure story set in a fantasy village on the frontier.
Everyone’s heard stories about valiant heroes fighting despicable monsters. Brave souls who laid down their lives to ward off unspeakable evils. But just as often, the fight for humanity’s survival is decided by the small battles. In the friendly village of Willowknot, the darkness is beginning to stir. Creatures long forgotten begin to wake from their slumber, and foreign realities begin intersecting our own. At the center of it all is you. Will you resign yourself to becoming an unsung hero, your glorious deeds forgotten by history? Or will you make the world scream your name with its final breath?
The most important decisions are made when nobody’s watching.
Planned Features
As a choose-your-own-adventure story (think David Bischoff’s “Time Machine”), this fiction will have a nonlinear structure. Just reading chronologically from one chapter to the next would make very little sense. Because of this nonlinear style, it will also take longer for the story to get to a “readable” state. In the meantime, I’ll go over some of the ideas I have for the story here, so you know what to expect.
> Multiple BackgroundsOnly one character background will be available at first, to make it easier to write, but the plan is to allow the reader to choose between 3-4 different “backstories” for their character that allow for different actions, dialogues, and endings.
> Diverse EndingsAs mentioned above, the plan is to have several different endings available. And no, by “endings,” I don’t mean GAME OVER screens. You won’t be on a clear-cut mission to take a photo of an archaeopteryx, where the only true “ending” to the story is success. You will be able to choose whether to be a hero or a villain, and you will be fully capable of failing at either.
> Side Quests (sort of!)It will take a while, but once I’ve got the structure decently fleshed out, I want to start going back and adding a lot of little bits of “flavor text” to spruce up the story. Things like special interactions if you’ve said/done a certain thing, or extra scenes that just add a bit of lore if you find them. The goal is to get it to a point where two different people can pick up this fiction and get two entirely different experiences from it, rather than just two different endings.
