Chapter 1 : A Sunfish Was Born

When I opened my eyes, my vision was skewed.

My breathing was also strange…

It was as if I wasn’t inhaling any air at all.

I tried moving my legs until I realized there was a lack of them.

Where was I…?

Why am I here…??

I looked around at my surroundings, and was met with a slight shadow of what seemed to be… a sunfish?

I tried moving closer to the shadow and was suddenly stopped by an invisible wall.

It was glass?

This feeling of weight every time I try to move, and also that shadow….

wait, don’t tell me…

I’ve turned into a sunfish???

It would be an understatement that when I came to the realization that I’ve turned into a sunfish, I wasn’t panicking. I tried thinking hard on what I was doing before getting here.

I think I was walking home from cram school?

Was I crossing a road?

Hold on…

Damn it, is this one of those developments where a truck crashed into me and I got reincarnated into another world or some stupid plot like that?!?

Whoever wrote this setting must’ve been a massive idiot, I muttered to myself. Even though I didn’t know how a sunfish would do so in the first place.

Nevertheless, I calmed myself down to a certain degree and started recalling the events of what happened before I got into this mess.

I was crossing a road while playing a mobile game on my phone, it was none other than Survive! Mola Mola!

It was honestly a good-for-nothing game where your task is to just tap on the screen so that the sunfish can get larger. In spite of that, I still liked the game to the point that I played it while I was crossing the road.

Oh… so that’s how I died huh. Funny how fate works sometimes.

Well, I couldn’t really say I enjoyed my life in the first place. School wasn’t much fun and I didn’t have any friends to begin with. All I had were webnovels and video games which I was helplessly addicted to.

Maybe I should thank the person responsible for the situation I’m in right now. For this second chance at life. What’s in the past can’t be changed anyways, I’ll live my new life to the fullest!!

Setting all the enthusiasm aside, the situation I found myself in is still quite strange. Even though I’m in this huge aquarium, I’m the only one here. That’s pretty strange…

Suddenly a silver-haired girl that seemed to be in her twenties showed up. She had sharp, pointy looking ears, as if she was an… elf? I guess I really was reincarnated to a fantasy. Her facial features clearly showed a cool, almost fortress-like expression.

‘All that was just to say, she was really pretty.’

“Well, thanks.”

The girl suddenly said, sounding as if she was answering my thoughts. That scared me for a bit. I’m sure it’s just a coincidence.

‘There's no way she can hear me right?’

“I can hear you loud and clear.”

And yep. I guess this is it. Another failure of a life lived by me, the loser of the story. How embarrassing. If I were really like the sunfish in the stories I’ve heard, then I must’ve surely died by embarrassment right about now.

“Pfft Hahah, you shouldn’t worry too much.” The girl said while grinning refreshingly, her previously cold and calm expression relaxed into a smile.

“Hearing someone's thoughts through mental magic takes a heavy toll on the mind. And it’s not as if I can hear everything either, mostly just thoughts that are loud enough as if you’re thinking out loud.”

That gave me a small sense of relief, just barely enough so I didn’t have to push through with my plans of giving up on this life as well. In a way this is a good thing though, considering that I was a sunfish, I couldn’t really converse with people the normal way.

‘Okay, so I can talk to you like this then?’

“Pretty much, yeah.”

Considering that I had basically no social life in my previous one, these types of conversations were always hard for me (especially because the person I’m talking to currently is quite charming) I’d often wonder what to say in which situations and would just end up being overwhelmed.

I needed to come up with something quick, or else it’ll get awkward.

Something I wouldn’t even wish on the guy that crashed into me with his truck.

‘So… uhmmm, how’s it goin’?’

What the hell was that? Couldn’t I have said literally anything else that wasn’t as horrible as that line?

Awful delivery as well. It’s like I’m in highschool trying to get closer to my crush that I only have one class with.

I was suddenly flushed with feelings of embarrassment and regret for not improving my social skills, yet I can only hope she doesn’t think I’m weird over this or something like that.

“I’m good. You don’t need to be so tense around me you know, on the contrary I should be the one feeling nervous instead. With you being the great sunfish and all.:.”

‘What…? What are you talking about?’

“You really don’t know? You’re the one and only…The Great Sunfish King, are you not?”

What was this girl on about?? Was this a setting of this world I didn’t know about?

‘I have absolutely no clue.’

“I guess you must’ve suffered amnesia after regressing.”

Regression?

I guess it must be similar to how it was in that mobile game I’ve played.

The sunfish dies and moves on to the next turn, It would be reborn and repeat its endless cycle of life. In a way it seemed quite sad. Surely living such a life would be quite lonely.

If that’s really the case then, I might actually be that Great Sunfish King. Although the way in which I was able to be reincarnated here is still a mystery to me.

‘Okay… regression huh, before we get into that though, if you wouldn’t mind telling me, what’s your name?’

Yes, an introduction should’ve been the starting point of this conversation. I was too caught up in this weird situation that I forgot to even ask for her name.

“Lilia.”

She said while still beaming that smile of hers, one that would leave an imprint on anyone for the rest of their lives. Seeing that smile made me hesitate for a bit on what to say next.

‘Uhh… well it’s nice to meet you.’

“Pleasure to meet you as well, Great Sunfish King.”

‘You don't need to call me that; It sounds a bit too pretentious for me.’

“What should I call you then?”

‘You can call me…’

Wait. What was my name again…? For some reason I can’t recall my name.

‘I don’t know actually.’

“Then I’ll just call you Sir Sunfish!”

‘Well alright, I guess I can’t really argue with that. So what was that thing about regression?’

“That is the nature of The Great Sunfish King. He lives in the Great Sea, guarding everything within it.

He is The Infallible Ruler of The Oceans, One who draws the boundary between land and sea, that was certainly the case until a few years ago.

You see, there used to be two rulers of this world. One of them was the Sunfish King (that’s you!), and the other one was The Ruler of Land, The Absolute Monarch of Earth, The Great Tortoise King.”

‘This setting is quite interesting, huh.’

“Please do not interrupt my narration Sir Sunfish; I’m afraid I would mess up the story if you disturb me.”

‘Alright, I guess I have to lock in on this one, no more words from me.’

“Okay then, like what I was saying, this used to be the case until a few years ago. Both of these rulers weren’t really present in our lives. Despite that, they are very much real existences which are necessary for this world.

But then, on a normal day like any other, The Great Tortoise suddenly disappeared.

People didn’t really notice it at the time, but slowly the balance of the world started to tilt.

Chaos started to ensue more and more, especially on land.

At night the perpetrator revealed itself, it was the embodiment of evil itself, born within the abyss and knows nothing of the world above.

It was Abaddon, Ruler of the Abyss, Incarnate of Destruction.

Abaddon admitted to murdering the Tortoise King and declared himself to be the new absolute Ruler, not just of land, but also the world in its entirety.

The Great Sunfish King heard of this news and couldn’t sit still, He went to confront the evil head on.

Unfortunately, he failed.

This would be where the story ends if it’s not for the fact that the Sunfish King can regress. This is where you come in, Sir Sunfish! You are that legendary Sunfish King, the one who will fight the evil once more and bring peace to this land.”

What did I get myself into… Fighting a demon king of all people??

And somehow I have to win?

Even the supposedly previous me couldn’t defeat this guy, how could I (who was just a highschool loser before this) even have a chance of winning against him??

‘So how did I end up with you then?’

“That’s a good question actually Sir Sunfish, I got you as a prize at a festival!”

‘...What?’

“It’s just as I said, I was playing this game at this festival and got you as the prize!”

‘...How would you even know I’m the Sunfish King then?? Couldn’t I have just been some random ol’ sunfish, not necessarily important to this world, and only an insignificantly insignificant little creature who was coincidentally brought out of its own habitat for the amusement of others?’

“You talk a lot huh Sir Sunfish, Well, I have the proof right here!”

She showed a paper, not really big in size, just enough for it to be somewhat official-looking (even though it clearly wasn’t), and it says the following:

[Congratulations, you earned the regressed Great Sunfish King!!]

‘Is this girl perhaps… stupid?’
