Prologue

Charlie wanted to weep, he wanted to scream, he wanted to lash out in fury at the world and all of its injustices. But even now he could feel his anger beginning to drain out of him. The righteous anger that he wanted to use to lash out, to get even, simmered down until it was nothing but a faint spark. He began to breathe more steadily as his emotions, which had been tearing him apart moments ago, slowly bled out of him. Several long moments passed until what was left standing in his shoes, while it resembled Charlie in nearly every way, was distinctly something else. It looked up and smiled as the man who had done this to him entered the room.
