Chasing A White Rabbit

I've always thought of myself as the normal type. I make decisions that make sense, I go about a daily routine, and I keep my nose in my own business.

But I think that I've begun to lose my mind.

I first began to have such an idea when I got onto the bus to go home from my part-time job at a popular bookstore. As usual, there were few people on the bus and I sat the furthest to the back after paying the fare. The bus driver tipped his hat to me, as usual.

What wasn't usual was that a few minutes into the commute, the metal wall of the bus rippled like water's surface would when a raindrop fell onto it and a woman appeared inside the bus, fazing through the wall. At first, I believed I was just tired and the woman had been on the bus before I got on.

But I surely would've seen her.

The woman's hair was pure white, like snow and cut short in a bob. Her eyes were pink. Her outfit consisted of a red cloak, white blouse, navy blue vest, and a matching skirt with black boots. Along with white stockings and a gold trim monacle. She was certainly eye-catching.

The strangest thing about her, however, were the white rabbit ears atop her head.

You would surely notice someone if they had long rabbit ears on their head, right? My exhaustion must be getting to my head. She must just like to dress up in public.

The real thing that got me worried was when her ears twitched.

For a full five minutes, I could do nothing but stare at the woman blankly. She never turned to look straight at me though. Her pink eyes simply looked over the bus before she let out a sigh.

"The suspect escaped. What am I supposed to tell the Queen? Oh well. I have to head back anyway." The woman sighed, pulling out a pocketwatch. "I'll be late."

With that said, she returned back through the wall of the bus, leaving behind that strange ripple effect again.

When my stop finally came, I was about to walk off the bus before asking the driver, "That woman was quite strange, wasn't she?".

He gave me a strange look before dropping a bombshell on me.

"Miss, you were the only one on the bus."

After that, I promised to ask by boss if I could take a different shift.

But that wasn't the only strange incident I had with this woman. I began to see everywhere, dressed strangely and saying strange things. Yet no one else could see her.

At the grocery store, at the park, in a chimney, even at my place of work. She. Was. Everywhere. The fact that no one else could see her gave me no peace of mind. I even considered going to a psychologist many times. I only began to really acknowledge her as real when she talked to me.

"You can see me, can't you?"

"..."

"Don't ignore me now, I already made eye contact with you!"

I was walking home from the bus stop when we encountered each other again. She was walking right beside me, keeping perfect pace.

"Can you hear me?"

"I can hear you, I'm just not sure if I 'hear' you."

"Oh, you mean you think you're going insane. Don't worry, happens all the time."

She was looking around while speaking to me, like she was expecting someone.

"What do you mean?"

"It happens all the time when someone first opens their eyes."

"Opens their eyes?" I repeated. The rabbit woman nodded.

"You've opened your eyes. That's the only reason you can see me. And-"

The woman stopped mid-sentence and pulled out her pocketwatch before gasping and getting a terrified look on her face.

"Oh no. I'm late!" She screamed. The white-haired woman then began to run surprisingly fast for someone in heeled boots.

"Wait!" Before I knew it, I was running after her albeit much slower than her. I still had to ask her questions. Like if she was just an illusion and I really did need a psychologist. I almost lost her in a couple crowds of people. She seemed to move through them like she were liquid. Eventually, I found myself at the mouth of an alleyway that seemed to go to a dead end.

But I had seen her go into this alleyway. There was no sight of the woman, just a dark alleyway. That didn't make any sense. None of it made sense.

Things made even less sense when I walked into the alleyway and could smell something. Not the sewage smell one would expect, but a tea parlour like smell. Sweet and subtle. It got stronger as I got closer to where the dead end of the alleyway. There were no cafes nor tea parlours open at this time of night. The smell made no sense.

The woman made no sense, the smell made no sense, hell, even I made no sense! Why was I even following her?  To a dark alley of all places! Was I asking to get mugged?! I'd find a good psychologist this weekend. I began to walk out of the alleyway, but something was wrong again.

I seemed to not be moving at all. Or more like the entrance was moving away from me.

I looked back at the wall of the alley to see if I had moved only to see a wooden door right smack in the center of it where there was only brick before.

What in the world was going on?

I even heard a voice from beyond the door. It was going "I'm late! I'm late! I'm so late!", very familiar. The woman.

With no way of leaving the alley, and already doubting my sanity, I walked towards the door and wrapped my hand around the handle. Taking a deep breath, I turned it. But the door didn't open.

The handle was swallowed up by the door in a whirlpool like vortex, taking my hand and my entire body into the darkness.

Let this be a lesson to myself. Never chase a white rabbit.
