Mine sweeper, beautiful girl, and floating screen of death

Mine sweeper, beautiful girl, and floating screen of death

Henry King woke up on just another Friday, another day of boring classes, homework, and maybe even some below standard tasting food at the college cafeteria that was over cooked almost as much as it was over priced. Rolling out of bed and grabbing a few lizard safe to eat treats he went over to his pet iguana, Chloe, who lazed about with her eyes only half opened, until they bugged out at his approach with the treats. He fed her a couple and stroked the top of her head to her delight while she made what he assumed were happy little lizard noises. He chuckled to himself and headed to the dresser pulling out clothes for the day, black jeans and a white t-shirt of a black logo of a sword going through fancy letters that read national fencing league champion.

Henry had been the national youth fencing champion for 3 years before he "retired" due to commitments with university getting to be too much. He still participated in the schools fencing club but to be honest nobody wanted to have any kind of practice or real matches with him anymore. He had left multiple people with bruised torsos and arms when they didn't cover properly or completely destroy his opponent with blinding speed finishing bouts in a few touches. Henry wasn't a braggart and wouldn't say it but he was very good, but the people around him were average fencers and didn't have the nuanced understanding of body language or physicality that he possessed from years of practicing with his father who was like him a former champion at the sport. Competition wasn't where his fascination with swords ended however, his father a historian of ancient history had been obsessed  with the history and styles of different swords had taught henry everything that he knew and he absorbed it greedily. Sword fighting was the one place where his overactive mind seemed to be the most suited. taking in the subtle changes in breathing, body language and stance in milliseconds and adjusting faster than they could react.

After getting out of the shower, getting dressed and saying goodbye to his sleepy lizard, Henry headed for his class, sociology. Originally when he had signed up for this class and reading the description it seemed like it would be interesting, learning about different social structures and cultures from around the world seemed  like an interesting topic but sadly Mr. Potman disappointed him with mind numbingly dull lectures in a monotone voice that seemed to put even the most adamant students to bed.

Arriving to the class and taking his seat next to the left hand side wall of windows that looked out over the rest of the campus he plugged in his laptop and started up his favorite pastime for the class, minesweeper. For some reason this old game was the combination of luck and skill that elicited him great joy when he wasn't instantly taken out by the cursed land mines. The class started and he stopped while the professor called roll, Henry's eyes looked around the room until they inevitably landed on his class crush, who was he kidding, crush in general. Her name was Robin and she had the most beautiful red hair he had ever seen. He had been partnered with her for multiple group projects throughout the semester and she was nice but way out of Henry's league. At least that's what he thought, Robin on the other hand had been waiting for Henry to ask her out for the entirety of the semester.

Henry's eyes lingered for just a moment too long when Robin looked back after grabbing something from her purse. She looked up and their eyes met and she smiled at him, he had no idea what to do his mind panicked and he tried to think of something cool to do to impress her. Instead he just gave a little wave and surprisingly she gave him one back and then turned back to the front of the class. Henry mentally fist pumped the sky but kept it cool as a cucumber on the outside. The seconds of the class ticked on and on with him glancing up at Robin and Robin glancing back at Henry unfortunately for either they didn't catch either looking up at at one another.

Eventually after many rounds of getting blown up in minesweeper and scrolling what seemed endlessly on social media the class finally ended and everybody got up to leave. Henry was still packing up his things when he noticed someone standing in front of his desk. He looked up and he thought he felt his face redden, it was robin. She looked beautiful in her gray sweater and blue jeans and he hair in falling around her face. She looked like an angel, well if angels had red hair and liked to thrift for old clothes that were trendy.

Hi Henry, she said, I was wondering if you wanted to meet up for dinner at the cafe later I can't make lunch because of the rest of my classes but i was wondering if you wanted to meet up for dinner maybe?

Henry's mind went blank and fired a thousand times a second. He tried to think of something suave and cool to say but for the life of him he just couldn't. He decided honesty was the best policy and hurriedly said yes he would love to go with her.

she smiled at him, awesome! it sounds like it might be better than the usual over cooked chicken! any way I have to get to economics but ill see you later! she waved while walking away and headed out of the room.

He sat there for a second and then the biggest smile he had ever had put itself on his face as he packed up the rest of his things and headed out of the room. He was thinking about how dry chicken wouldn't be that bad and thinking about how to pass the time until the dinner opening of the cafeteria when reached the end of the hallway and got to the top of the stairs his vision seemed  to go fuzzy and he lost his balance. In front of him a floating screen appeared and he had just enough time to read the words before the world around him went dark and he fell down the stairs.
