Chapter 13: Wrong Genre
'Fuck! This is so frustrating.'
This sentence summarizes Klein's feelings at the moment. He felt so... So helpless.
Because of his Blessing, he doesn't have any fighting ability to speak of. Especially with any non-humans. His only ability that has any sort of fighting power, Weak Point, is useless right now. It only works with humans.
'Did I picked the wrong Genre?' Klein asked himself doubtfully. 'Is this not an adventure but a kingdom building one? But, I don't have any idea about politics. And I'm not a desk mechanical Engineer like the one novel that I read. Unlike him, I don't know where to start in building a steam engine, and then suddenly reciting the periodic table out of my head. No. Think positive! I'm sure there's something in that laboratory which will become my cheat.'
Klein consoled himself that he'll find something which will bolster his basic stats at least. Just like in xianxia, where the protagonist will find mythical herbs or pills left and right. Finding a furtitious encounter every arc.
'Fuck! I forgot! Pills won't work. My strength and MP is fixed at 5. This is so frustrating. Please don't let there be any pills. A Magic treasure will do.'
"Get down!"
Klein heard before he was drag downward, laying flat on the ground.
He was so engrossed in his thoughts that he didn't notice the largest Hungry wolf launch another beam. Its aim is coincidentally close to their location.
'Yes! Let's be positive. I'm sure there's something in that laboratory that will help me. I'm the MC.'
"Thanks!"
Klein thanked Eric before bringing his attention back towards the fight. He surmised that in the future he'll gain something to overcome his handicap, and watching how his companions fight can be considered gaining fighting experience. Klein is a person who doesn't waste any given opportunity.
Everyone are struggling with their foes, except the three Axe gang members. They are fighting three v two after all.
Right now, Klein can finally see why they are part of the axe gang. Except the matching crossed axe tattoo, their weapons are all axe motif.
Ed carries a double bit axe with both heads larger than a child's torso. He can be considered their main attacker.
Edd is equipped with a throwing axe which he use to assist Ed. Though, he is using it as a melee weapon for now. He has only thrown one axe. And aside from the two on his hands, he still has a spare at his back.
While Eddy, Klein paused for a moment thinking of ways to describe his weapon.
He was also carrying an 'axe'. But the head part is so big that you may even call it a shield. Klein briefly wondered if it can be even called an axe at all. It still has a basic structure of an axe. It has a handle at the bottom and one edge is sharp as well. Klein didn't know if it is still an axe or just a big ass butcher knife.
'Is he an import?' Klein laughed at his own joked.
They are fighting rather far away from the others so it really can be considered as a 3v2.
Eddy is the tank, Ed is the DPS and Edd is the support.
Ed brandished his axe against one wolf aiming for its head. He was too slow as the wolf easily dodges his attack by leaping sideways. His axe completely whipped, and it slightly buried in the ground.
Seeing Ed lost control of his weapon, the other wolf didn't miss this opportunity to attack. But Eddy, the tank, covered Ed with his big ass axe meeting the wolf's charge.
The first wolf is not idle either. After dodging, it immediately counter attacked. Well, that was its intention before it was forced to dodge because an axe is thrown in its way, care of Edd.

'They are really a balance party,' Klein thought after observing them. 'It's like a group of axe fanatics decided to play a MMORPG. Bunch of NPCs.'
Even with the three of them fighting well with each of them covering each others back, Klein can feel that something felt wrong. It is too slow. Klein can feel that they are not on the offensive. They are on the defensive.
Klein felt that they could easily dominate their opponent, but they are too conservative. 'Such a bunch of old timers.' Klein thought to himself. They are being to careful, afraid of any injuries.
With that thought, he decided to watch his other party members.
Togu and Guro are facing their own wolves. They are using some sort of technique that allows anything that touches their fist to briefly catch on fire.
Togu managed to hit the Hungry wolf's thigh and it burst into flame. Though, it was only for a brief moment before it was extinguished.
A repugnant smell of burning hair can be smelled through the air. Togu's attack is very effective.
Klein can see that he was also dominating the fight, but there is one problem. Someone is dragging him down.
Just like right now, Klein noticed. Togu was prepared to deliver a finishing blow after he managed to hit the hungry wolf square on its face. But he was forced to abandon that thought.
Togu stretched his arms, grabbing Guro's collar. He pulled him down just in time to save his younger brother's life. An inch closer and Guro's head will be crashed by the wolf's maw.
As for Saita...
'Well, how to describe it,' Klein tried to come up with an explanation. 'It's like they're playing tag.'
Saita hasn't given up on giving his foe a suplex.
And as if by instinct, the Hungry wolf continued to dodge. It is fearing for its life. It felt that if it was caught for just one time, it will be dead meat.
Klein had been observing them for half a minute but this hungry wolf hadn't attacked at all. It was only jumping left and right trying to dodge Saita's grapple.
As for Kruce, she's struggling. She's facing the largest Hungry wolf. One look and you can tell that it's the alpha.
Klein felt that if it was an ordinary hungry wolf, Kruce can easily take care it. But that is not the case. For some reason, it can shoot lightning from its forehead.
'Well, not lightning.' Klein thought to himself. Lightning has the speed of light. There's no way that Kruce can dodge that. It only has the appearance of lighting.
Klein saw Kruce get hit with this lightning, but she wasn't electrocuted. She managed to block it with her arm and Klein can see a bruise forming.
"I didn't expect to see a level two beast this close to the city."
And as if by magic, Eric appeared ready to give an exposition to the main character.
"Level two?" Klein asked.
"Are you a country bumpkin?" Eric mocked. "Yah! I forgot you are. See here, when an animal managed to contact pure mana, there is a chance that they may evolve. These animals can't be longer called an animal but they're now a Magic Beast. A newly evolved Magic beast is level one.
Their attributes are enhanced based on their previous one. Wolf may became stronger and faster while a rabbit may only became faster.
If a level one Magic Beast consume more mana, there's a chance that they'll evolved once more, gaining magic abilities. These abilities are random and there's no way to tell what abilities they'll get. As for that wolf, it seems to possess some variation of mana bolt."
"So level one and level two."
"Are you finally impressed, Klein? You can call me teacher. Teacher Eric has a nice ring to it."
"Is there a level three?"
"I don't know. I'm a grave robber. I mainly specialize in tombs, not magic beast."
"You don't even know, and you dare call yourself a teacher."
Klein managed to shut up Eric. Nobody can and should act big in front of him.
"But what I'm more surprised about is that Kruce can fight toe to toe with a level two magic beast. How strong is he exactly?" Eric quipped.
Just like what Eric had stated, Kruce managed to hold off the largest Hungry wolf. She's struggling but she can manage, specially with Lasgole supporting her from the back.
The fight is in a stalemate. Klein surmised that to break it, the Mages have to make a move. There's no use in depending on Klein and Eric. Their combine fighting strength is less than one.
Klein is excited to see the Mage attack. He wondered if they are special as they say they are.
But sadly, it will be saved for later because someone finally managed to break the stalemate.
Saita finally managed to catch his foe giving it a suplex.
Looking at the outcome, Klein can say that the wolf's decision to continue dodging is right all along. Sadly, it can't dodge forever.
It was suplexed on the ground and its head caved in from the impact. It died instantly.
Its death throes distracted another Hungry wolf. It is Togu's opponent. This distraction caused its life.
And just like that, Klein's group outnumbered the wolves eight to four.
It is double their number. Seeing this, the remaining hungry wolves fled, headed by their leader.
