Chapter 16: Intent

Chapter 16: Intent

So... I may have unlocked my Demon Blood's Affinity to the Dark Element.

As the wall of black flame continues to roar in front of us, some of the classes happening inside the school building stopped and the on-lookers were surprised like us.

It goes without saying that this sudden appearance of Dark Element gathered quite the attention.

"Darkness..."

"Yeah, I was wondering whether I really had it or not. I didn't think there would be a real harm in imbuing it into the spell. But now I think that was a bad idea."

Archie and Charles rush to Rose's side. It seems that both of them were quite surprised from my magic. Archie looks really excited while in Charles is confused.

"Rose, I didn't think you had it in you!"

"I didn't know you had affinity with the Dark Element."

Archie knew from the start that I had Demon Blood, but since I didn't really show any Demon-like trait until now, nobody else thought I had it.

"Dude, I didn't think using a Level 4 spell would awaken it!"

"Neither did I. I thought you needed Dark Element spells for it."

Them aside, I look at Ofelia who seems really shocked by it.

"Is there something wrong?"

"Sinister."

"What?"

Like she didn't hear me, she approaches the wall of flame and reached her hand out unto it.

"Wait, I don't recommend touching it!"

Ofelia puts her hand into the wall of black flame.

I expected her to scream in pain, but to my surprise, she didn't look like in any sort of pain.

"Your fire holds no Malevolence. It doesn't harm any."

After pulling back her hand, she shows me her hand that was holding a piece of black flame. I don't know how she's doing it.

"Dark Magic relies on the will of the person. Because you had the idea to only guard and intimidate, it doesn't have the properties to actually harm anyone."

"Oh... I didn't know that. There were no books to study about the element so I didn't know."

After a while, I decided to cancel the magic. But because I burned too much magic, I couldn't help but get tired as Rose.

Charles also tried to cast the same magic, but since he was a tad too powerful, he ended up making a line of glass on the practice ground after melting the sand.

The tale has been illicitly lifted; should you spot it on Amazon, report the violation.

And finally, it was Archie's turn.

For him, Ofelia wrote a different spell on the ground. Unlike Charles's and I, the magic spell he received was kind of more intricate as if it was specially tailored for him.

"Sir Archie, since you wanted to know one, I decided to give you the Level 5 Magic I know. But because of your lack of magic power, I made some adjustments that-"

"-That reduces the power and increased efficiency of the spell. I got it."

Noticing Archie's excitement, Ofelia was slightly surprised. But because of his enthusiasm, she couldn't help but let out a giggle.

"So, what is this magic?"

"It's called Aero Alto. A spell that creates a defensive orb made out of condensed air pressure. Since you are the power type with your sword art, you have a lot of opening. With this, even if the power is reduced, it will still work very well."

"I see... Alright! I'll try it!"

Archie distances himself away from us. But even though he's away, we could still see his excited smile on his face.

Unlike me, Archie had to chant his casting because verbal incantation is more efficient with magic drain than mental chanting.

"-Aero Alto!"

Upon calling the magic's name, dust and wind starts swirling around him.

And as if it gained life, the air and dust became a ball of deep green colored magic.

After that, Archie suddenly dropped on one knee while looking really exhausted and drained.

But even so, he looked at me with a really proud and happy smile.

"I, I did it, Red!"

"You did, bud. You did."

The four of us approached Archie and his new magic ball.

Since it was something new to me, I couldn't help but get curious of it.

"So, what does it do exactly?"

I asked Ofelia directly since it's her magic.

"Originally, this magic is self-sustaining orb that absorbs immaterial attacks such as fire and other wind magic. For Water and Earth magic, it can only divert it."

"Oh, so like a super vacuum cleaner?"

"I don't know what that is but I think it does work like a vacuum."

"Ah, vacuum cleaners don't exist in Azureth?"

Leaving us aside, it seems Archie and Charles are curious how the magic works. Since Rose is with them, I pretty much heard everything.

"So, if it works like a vacuum, can you shoot me with a fireball?"

"Sounds fun!"

"Please don't kill each other."

It seems they want to see it in action. And immediately, they rushed to the open field and distanced themselves from each other.

As Charles was gathering fire on his palm, Archie was controlling the orb around like trying to get a feel of how it works.

"I'm ready when you are!"

"Give me your best shot!"

Upon release, Archie guides the ball of vacuum in front of the fire ball.

Unexpectedly, the ball of fire changes its trajectory like it was guided to one direction which made it orbit around the ball of air instead.

"Oh, I get it! It's not vacuuming. It just redirects attacks now."

As I was saying that, the ball of flame suddenly jumps out of its orbit and launches itself towards me and Ofelia.

"Charles, cancel your magic!"

"I already did!"

As expected, fire magic can't be easily dispelled once launched because it's already a ball of flame and detached from the user.

Since the ball was already flying towards us, I instinctively jumped in front of it and extended my hand towards the fire.

When it hits my palms, I was pushed back a bit as it had some weight that I didn't expect.

"Are you alright?"

"Y-yeah, I'm using my own fire magic to not get burned."

Using my own fire, I overpower the flame by making a bigger fire to burn it out of the magic it had.

After that, I was able to dispel the magic without anyone getting seriously hurt.

Charles runs towards me with a really apologetic expression.

"Sorry about that, Red. I should've held back."

"It's alright, but you should apologize to the princess instead."

When I told him that, his face became grim and he immediately bowed in front of Ofelia.

"I deeply apologize for my blunder, your highness! Please punish me for my transgression."

Though she wasn't hurt in any way, Ofelia looked bothered by his sudden beg for punishment.

"Sir Charles, please raise your head. I won't punish you, but it would benefit us both if you mind your surroundings next time."

"I am honored by your mercy!"

Well, thank the Gods that Ofelia isn't sensitive when in comes to this.
