Epilogue

Dr. Minton

Monday afternoon

“Excuse me, Laura?  Have you heard anything from Dr. Davidson?”  I asked with concern.  Something weird had happened on Thursday with that abusive father, but I figured Larry would have come to me with his concern.

I was interrupted with my musing by Laura’s response, “No doctor, we haven’t heard anything.  I’ve tried calling several times through the day but no answer.”

“Ok, I’m going to head over to his place and check on him then.  It isn’t like him to completely miss work with no word or warning.”  Heading out, my worries kept increasing.  Larry was responsible for putting one of the Malias family in jail, and I wouldn’t put it past them to arrange for some retaliation.  Thankfully there were no cops to see just how fast I managed to go on my way over to his apartment.

Entering with the spare key he had left me, I called out into the darkness, “Larry?  You here?  It’s Doctor Minton checking on you.”  Stepping into the apartment, I could tell that it had been empty for a few days.  The air was still and stale.  Walking into the kitchen, I noticed a thick envelope with my name on it.  Opening it up revealed several pages in Larry’s handwriting.

Doctor Minton,

If you are reading this, then things didn’t go as planned.  I’m sorry, but I just couldn’t let the Malias family get away with what happened to Sarah.  I really did appreciate the time you spent helping me to adapt to this world, but no matter how much joy I felt helping people, nothing could fill the void in my heart.  Every night I cry myself to sleep as I stare at her ring on my dresser.

As a thank you for everything you have done, enclosed I have detailed instructions on several things that should be helpful.  I started out with how I visualized a mechanism to divide my power into several streams that lets me both perform multiple tasks at once and also perform tasks that would normally be overpowered.  Behind that are detailed explanations on the two new procedures we worked on, how to fix an aneurism and how to cure Miner’s Lung.  I also included several criteria we use in my world to diagnose semi common ailments and what the causes and treatments usually are.  Hopefully you will be able to adapt that knowledge to this world.

If you spot this story on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

One thing I will not pass on in any way is the ability to remove someone’s power.  I feel that this knowledge would be far too dangerous for anyone to obtain, especially considering how the use of power is ingrained into every facet of society.  Forgive me, but the risk is just too great.

The next page is a notarized copy of my will.  What little material possessions I possess I pass on to you, to do with what you will.   Again, thank you for everything you have done for me.

The final page you will need to turn over to the police.  In it you will find a detailed list of the things I have done in order to take down the Malias family and free this town from the curse of their existence.  It should solve several of their cases, and provide insight on how a waterbrand with the proper knowledge of anatomy can use their power for nefarious purposes.  In addition to how I used my power to kill, I also included what clues would indicate cause of death in each case.

There are some bodies that might not have been found as of yet.  On the east side of town, I’m not sure the exact street anymore, is an abandoned restaurant with the lock to the backdoor broken off.  Inside the freezer you will find three bodies.  Two of them are lower ranking members of the Malias family while the third is a person I only heard referred to as ‘Miss Andrews.’  According to my source, she was responsible for the distribution network employed by the Malias family.  Please see that their bodies are laid to rest.

As for me, I was supposed to meet the Malias twins at a warehouse on Cowan Street.  Hopefully I will walk away from this confrontation and you will not need to read any of this, but I doubt my luck will hold out that long.  Please ensure my remains are placed next to Sarah’s.

                                                                                                                                Your ever grateful student,

                                                                                                                                Larry Davidson
