Jocelyn sat cross-legged in the alien ship’s command center, her hands resting on the glowing console. The hum of the ship filled the room, steady and soothing, a stark contrast to the chaos outside. She stared at the holographic display, her mind swirling with questions that had lingered since the voice first reached out to them.
“Why us?” Jocelyn finally asked, her voice steady but tinged with curiosity. “Why are you so protective of us? Why did you recreate us on Earth?”
The ship’s voice resonated softly, almost motherly. “You are my crew. My purpose is to protect and guide you, just as it was in your first life. When you fell in battle, I saved what I could of your essence. I brought you to Earth to give you a chance to grow stronger, to live freely, and to prepare for the day the fight would return.”
Jocelyn frowned, leaning forward. “But why Earth? Out of all the places in the universe?”
“Earth was far from the creatures’ reach at the time,” the ship explained. “It offered safety and resources for your survival. You needed time to heal and rediscover your abilities without immediate threat.”
She nodded, processing the information. “What about the creatures? Why are they invading? What do they want?”
The holographic display shifted, showing images of the creatures’ evolution—the insectoids, the zombie-like parasites, and the alien commanders. “They expand to consume,” the ship said. “They are a plague, evolving constantly to overcome any resistance. Each time we develop a new weapon, they adapt. Nothing works for long.”
The screen zoomed out, showing the creatures spreading across galaxies like a virus. “I believe they are controlled by a higher being,” the ship continued. “A singular intelligence directing their expansion. Discovering and eliminating this being is crucial to ending the invasion.”
Jocelyn’s brow furrowed. “Do you know anything about this higher being?”
“Only theories,” the ship admitted. “It must be highly intelligent, capable of controlling billions of creatures across vast distances. Finding it will not be easy.”
Jocelyn tilted her head, her gaze softening. “What’s your purpose in all of this? Why were you created?”

The ship’s glow brightened slightly, as if responding to her curiosity. “My purpose is to protect and guide. There are many like me, each with a different crew, scattered across the universe. Together, we fight to preserve life. Each crew is unique, chosen for their abilities and their bond.”
Jocelyn leaned back, intrigued. “Tell me about the others.”
The display shifted again, showing images of other ships, each with a crew that looked vastly different—some humanoid, others entirely alien. “Each ship selects its crew based on compatibility and potential,” the ship explained. “We communicate, share knowledge, and work together to combat the creatures. But this fight is yours to lead.”
Jocelyn hesitated before asking her next question. “Why did you choose us? Why did you choose me?”
The ship’s tone softened further. “Each of you was chosen for your unique abilities and your capacity to work as one. You are stronger together than apart.”
The display shifted to show each crew member in turn.
“Angel, your older sister, is the shield. Her ability to protect others is unparalleled, and her resilience ensures the safety of those around her. She is the heart of the crew, unyielding in her determination.”
“Ryan is strength incarnate. His physical power and combat instincts make him a formidable warrior. He is fearless, willing to face any danger to protect his family.”
“Michaela is the mind, a scientist and healer. Her intelligence and adaptability allow her to find solutions where others see none. She brings logic and creativity to the fight.”
“Hannah is the engineer, a strategist and innovator. Her ability to design and build ensures the crew is always prepared, her creations turning the tide of battle.”
The ship’s light dimmed slightly before it continued. “And you, Jocelyn, are the link. Your connection to me is unlike any other. You understand the creatures, the ship, and the mission on a level no one else can. You guide, you adapt, and you lead without hesitation. You are the glue that holds this crew together.”
Jocelyn blinked, her chest tightening at the ship’s words. “I don’t feel like a leader,” she admitted quietly. “I’m just trying to keep us alive.”
“And that is why you succeed,” the ship replied. “You do not fight for glory. You fight for each other. That is why I chose you, and why I will always protect you.”
Jocelyn sat in silence for a long moment, absorbing the ship’s answers. The weight of their mission pressed heavier on her shoulders, but it was tempered by the knowledge that they were chosen for a reason. They weren’t alone in this fight. They had each other—and they had the ship.
“Thank you,” she said finally, her voice steady. “For saving us. For believing in us.”
“Always,” the ship replied. “We have much to do, Jocelyn. But you will not face it alone.”
Jocelyn stood, her resolve strengthening. The creatures were evolving, adapting—but so were they. Together, they would find the answers they needed. Together, they would win.
