Chapter 12 Here Come the Rookies

City of Koffe 5 Months Earlier

Ahh the City of Koffe, to think that this fair city was just another back-water village a short 10 years ago. Yet look at it now, magnificent towering spires of gold and silver, a defensive wall and portcullis, the merchant stalls lining the streets. Lovely little houses in natural greens and yellows are spaced evenly, each with wonderful gardens. The people are smiling and joyfully going about their business in the early morning. Yes, this has truly become the grandest city in the entire Tyrannis Plains.

“Hey Rahzen!”

Yes, this city is one of the most beautiful places that I have ever laid eyes upon. It…

“Rahzen, are you listening to me?”

… is a testament to the ingenuity and will of its people to become better than its humble beginning. The crown jewel of the city is Martyr's Rise, the adventurers guild named in honor of Martyr Roslyn. No, it is not named in remembrance of her like so many other buildings in the world but a testament to her power and past deeds.

“I will not be ignored Rahzen, now pay attention!” *THUD*

That hit nearly knocked me for a loop and made me drop my journal. I turned on the person who hit me and screamed “What is your problem Torgin? Can’t you see I’m writing right now!”

He had a crooked smile plastered across his face as he looked down on me. “I just wanted you to get your head out of that little book of yours for a second. I mean we have just arrived in the largest city on the Tyrannis plains and all you do is keep your head buried in it. You're missing all the sights of the city, it's really sad.”

I could only roll my eyes at his comment. “You know the reason I spend so much time writing in my journal. As someone who possesses the epic rated Chronicler class my power comes from my written words. We can’t all be Juggernauts like you.”

“Yeah, you're right, not everyone can be as big and strong as I am.”

“Alright captain ego enough. It’s been a long trip. I just wanted something to take my mind off home ok. I can’t stop thinking that not only is this our first time away from Reptole but we're also getting the chance to become members of the Dungeon Branch of the Adventurers Guild.”

“Then the answer is simple, my homesick friend.” Torgin paused after he said that and looked at me expectantly. I refuse to give him the satisfaction of asking for his advice. After another few minutes he huffed and spoke again. “So, it’s gonna be like that huh? Fine my suggestion is that you write about home and our people.”

I really don’t want to say anything now because he makes an excellent point. Writing about home may be just what I need to soothe my nerves. No matter, time to swallow my pride.

“Good idea for once. Tap me when we finally arrive Torgin.”

My people the Herpton race, cold blooded wrath, chosen race and creations of Anolis God of Persistence and Cold-Blooded Terrors. The purpose for which we were created is a mystery even, yet in spite of this we strive for a calling a purpose of our very own. The lands of my people are located far to the south of the Tyrannis Plains deep in the middle of a hot, humid swampland where only the stupid or stubborn can survive. At the heart of this swamp lies Reptole the home of the Herpton race. We are unique in the way our people breed, with the scaled reptiles mating like mammals and then laying eggs, while we more sophisticated amphibians lay unfertilized eggs in water then release sperm to fertilize them.

Our mating habits aren’t the only unique things about us. We have the ability to produce offspring that can have the traits and powers of any living cold-blooded animal in the world. For this reason, we Herpton’s can produce some of the most powerful fighters in the world, fighters like my friend Torgin Skec, a Dragon Turtle variant of our race. Being one of our rarer variants he has a huge ego.

I myself am considered a rare variant the mudpuppy, what I lack in physical strength I more than make up for it in magical abilities. Each Herpton has its own individual strengths and weaknesses and when traveling outside of Reptole each is paired with another who can cover their weaknesses. For this matter my partner is Torgin, his physical power covers for my lack of them as my magical powers cover for his lack of them. To be precise Torgin is a Dragon Turtle Herpton and as such he stands a good 3 to 3 and a half meters tall. Like most turtle Herptons he has a shell it's just that his shell is obsidian black and spikey. Despite what people think my magic doesn’t cover a weakness to magic but a lack of powerful ranged attacks on his part. I still don’t see how he’s not a barbarian, but oh well.

I myself stand a modest 2.3 meters and have a smooth coat of slime covering my body. It acts as a second layer of def...

*THUD* “We're here Rahzen. Koffee city and the Adventurer's Guild await us.”

“Aaahh I thought I said to tap me not slug me in the shoulder!” I should have known he would still hit me. Why did I get my hopes up that he would do what he promised me? No matter we’re here now, just go to the guild and register and that's that.

“So, then oh might Torgin do you even know the way to the Adventurer's Guild or even what the name of this one is while you’re in such a rush?”

My words stopped him in his tracks, and he even had the nerve to look guilty, which for him is hard to do with a serrated beak for a mouth, as he turned around and looked me in the eyes. “Well, I know its somewhere in the city and it's a big important building.”

I can’t believe him, he doesn't have a clue where to go or even what place to ask for. Maybe they partnered us together so I can balance out his intelligence instead.

“Torgin the name of the building we are looking for is called Martyr’s Mercy. It should be located just south of the western gate in the temple district.” The dumb look he keeps giving me tells me all I need to know. “Just follow me alright.”
