12. The Day of the Battle

12. The Day of the Battle

[POV: Wyliame]

As I stretched my arms out toward the ceiling, my entire body shivered from the aching bite. The hue of my raised arms was painted a slight orange from the beam that radiated through the window beside me, while the sweat that I had accumulated as I slept through the night let out its shine.

The training that I had undergone with Onas from the night before made my entire body ache and heavy, although it was absolutely necessary for the battle that was about to come.

I turned to my right and noticed Mya breathing her gentle breaths with closed eyes while facing me. She had clutched onto my arms tightly the night before, but it seems that her grip on me had somehow loosened as we slept together until morning.

<”Go to the dining room. Onas said that he was going to wait for you there, remember?”> Yris reminded me.

I acknowledged her and gently pushed the blanket away from my body, though the stiffness of my arms made such a simple task all the more difficult to perform. I slowly got up from the bed, tucked the blanket snugly around Mya, and began walking toward the door.

“Mmm… Wyliame…? You’re awake already?”

Mya had woken up. She rubbed her eyes while yawning, then proceeded to look at me with curiosity.

“Good morning, Mya. Don’t worry about me, I just need to use the restroom for a bit.”

She didn’t bother to ask any more questions and simply nodded, tossing herself over to go back to sleep.

I then proceeded to walk out of the room, closing the door behind me as I exited.

*Sigh*

And, before I continue any further, let me say this.

I know that, as I speak of this story, there may be another speaker who is reading this story as well. They may call themself “Narrator”, or anything else such as that, but it is only from my point of view that this story should be entrusted to. I will not say this again. Do not trust the narrator.

Am I clear?

Then I shall continue.

As I emerged from the hallway, I noticed that Onas was seated on the same chair that he had eaten dinner on the night before. But instead of having a fork or a knife, his hand was gripped onto a sword… a “katana” if you will. It seemed to have seen many days, baring a crumbling handle with pieces of wolf hide around it falling apart. But despite the aged handle, the blade itself was fairly polished. By taking one look at the serrated blade, it was clear that Onas had paid much attention to the weapon.

“Good morning, boy. I hope you slept well.”

While we were training the night before, I recommended that we should take Mya and Lorelia and head straight to the capital of the Amber Kingdom to stay safe behind the walls, but Onas insisted that we should stay back at home. He said that the capital would be the first target of the war, and as such, the most amount of enemies would be there.

“We have about one or two hours before the war is announced. What should we do beforehand?” I asked, pulling out the seat beside Onas to sit down.

He shrugged at me and laid his weapon on the table. “We just gotta chill.”

“You serious?”

“Yup.”

What the hell? How is he not worried…?

“Dark blade, Shadow gun, Engulfing darkness, Embrace of Darkness…” Onas began listing out. “You’ve got a pretty large variety of spells, boy! Yeah… I’ve gotta take you to the academy after this battle. You’ll be at the top of your class!”

“Academy? Like a school?”

“...well, yes and no. The place that I’m thinking of isn’t a traditional school, but rather a place where people train to become members of the army. In fact, I came from the academy, too! God, how many decades has it been? I bet the teachers have missed me so much! Or, the elven ones at least. The human teachers might already be dead by now, bahahaha!”

But I simply stayed silent.

“At ease, Wyliame.” Yris quickly appeared behind me. “In a sense, you’ve been granted immortality with my powers. As long as my contract with you remains, I’ll destroy as many timelines as you want until you succeed. Death is no longer something you should be afraid of.”

I stared down at my lap, not bothering to face Yris. “I’m not scared of death…” I mumbled under my breath. “It’s just… I don’t know… I feel uneasy. Everything’s just eerie.”

Yris proceeded to wrap her arms around my neck from behind, almost like a mother’s embrace. “You’re right. That sense of eerieness that both of us have been feeling ever since you were transported to this timeline still lingers. We must stay on guard, but don’t stress about it too much. You’ve got me and Onas on your side in this timeline… and the god of dragons, Thosthar, too.”

Onas, who was still seated on his chair, scooted over closer to me and placed his hand on my head. “Trust me, boy. I won’t let you die in this timeline.”

Hearing that, the weight on my shoulder seemed to have gotten lighter, although the aches still remained. It was at that very moment that I made a declaration- a statement that served as my guidance.

“I’ll find the reason why Goddess Emma reincarnated me… and I’ll be the one responsible for getting my own memories back.”

Onas smiled at me and gave a thumbs-up. “That’s the spirit!”

Suddenly, the sound of footsteps appeared at one end of the hallway, creeping closer to the three of us. We all turned toward the direction of the noise.

“Onas? Wyliame? Why are you guys up to early? And who’s this girl next to the both of you?”

It was Lorelia.

Not knowing what to say, I turned my head toward Onas… but he also had his head turned toward me!

“Boy, say something…” he whispered.

“What? I don’t know what to say…”

“Greetings, madam,” Yris suddenly began, lifting her skirt and taking a bow. “I am Yris, the goddess of darkness and destruction, as well as the god that Wyliame had contracted with.”

W-what the hell? You can’t just say that out of nowhere!

Lorelia began walking over toward Onas. “Honey… is this true?”

“Huh? Um… uh… y-yeah? No? What? What are you talking about?”

“...”

Onas awkwardly scratched the back of his head, breaking his eye contact away from her. “Yeah… Wyliame’s a god-bearer.”

Lorelia then turned toward me, not saying a word.

“Don’t worry, Lorelia,” Yris said. “The boy hasn’t been deceiving you or anything of that sort. It was only recently that we established our contract.”

Shit… what should I say-

“No way! An eight-year-old has the power of a god by his side? Honey, do you know what this means? If we take him to the academy when he becomes a little bit older, then he’ll be at the top of his class!”

Onas then burst out into laughter. “That’s exactly what I said!”

Lorelia then began walking over to Yris. The two were roughly the same height, and both of them shared fairly similar hairstyles. They had fair skin, poreless faces, slender bodies, and voices that resembled the singing of flowers.

“What the… I didn’t notice this before, but you guys kinda look like sisters!” Onas blurted out in astonishment.

And he was right. Aside from Lorelia’s lengthy elven ears, she was nearly identical to Yris.

“O-oh my god… you’re so beautiful!” Lorelia admired with a raised voice. It was the exact same reaction that Mya had given the first time she saw Yris. Like mother like daughter…

“You… you’re not too bad yourself…” Yris mumbled to Lorelia with flushed cheeks.

“Wow, Wyliame… you’re one lucky boy!” Onas said. “To have such a beautiful goddess by your side-”

*BAM*

Onas then flew out of his chair, hitting the floor below at full speed.

“Huh? Who’re you calling beautiful?”

Lorelia had a fire in her eyes that glared down at Onas. Her demeanor had completely changed!

“Compliment! It’s a compliment! Remember when I said that you and Yris look alike? So when I say that Yris is beautiful, I also mean that you’re a beauty too!”

“...do you really mean that, honey?”

“Of course!”

“Well anyways…” Lorelia continued, completely unbothered about the fact that she had just punched her husband, who was then laying on the wooden floor in pain. “Tell me the reason why you guys are out here in the dining room so early in the morning. It’s barely five A.M. Something’s wrong, isn’t it?”

I quickly stood up from my chair, unhesitant about what I was about to say next.

“I’m from the future. Two hours from now, we’ll be attacked by the Sapphire Kingdom.”

She glanced at Onas, who simply nodded as if it reassure her that I was telling the truth. Yris placed a hand on Lorelia’s shoulder and stared at her with a serious look on her face.

“The boy’s telling the truth,” Yris insisted. “And also… he’s not from this world.”
