Prologue - Punked

Prologue - Punked

Jayson presses his thumb and finger against his forehead, his eyes closed. He had just died, but that was pretty far from his mind at the moment. He had just been told something wild by the guy sitting across from him, his legs raised on the desk and his back leaning against his chair, at ease.

“Let me get this straight…” Jayson says before taking a breath to get his bearings. “You're god and we actually live in a world of magic…” He starts to say slowly.

“But…” The man behind the desk says, moving things along.

“But, for some reason, in your capacity as god, you decided to blind everyone on earth? Why? For what?” Jayson asks, feeling some exasperation.

The man claiming to be god shrugs his shoulders. “I unno. Just felt like it.” He says, not interested in giving an explanation.

A vein begins to bulge on Jayson’s head as he continues to close his eyes. “But… Why… Did you feel like it…” He struggles to say through his frustration.

The man behind the desk lets out a yawn and rubs his eyes. “I unno, man. I always thought it was kind of lame…” He says, not wanting to finish his words. If he was being honest  he was sort of embarrassed.

Jayson couldn’t hold it in any longer. “What! You dense man! What was lame!?” He exclaims. He felt like he was pulling teeth. Why can’t he just say it!? He exclaims in his mind.

The man begins to pick at a blockage in his ear. “I unno. It sort of feels kind of lame that… You know… You had to see it to believe it…” He says while looking away, a blush forming on his cheeks.

Jayson’s eyes widen. He also felt that those words were lame, but he still didn’t quite understand. “So you think we didn’t deserve it? Is that it?” He asks, trying to get to the bottom of it.

The man lets out a sigh. He’d really rather not explain it. “Look man, it’s not like I took the magic away. I just made it so people didn’t see it as it was. I just disguised everything as something else. You should see some of the people I made hot. Ugly as sin. It’s kind of funny when they have sex.” He says before laughing out loud.

“Oh fuck.” Jayson says, getting the urge to puke. He was suddenly questioning all his previous relationships.

The man begins to laugh harder. “Nah, man, you’re good. Do you think we’d be having this conversation if I wasn’t at least impressed with your life. I have to say, considering your options for magic… You, ugh… You got some good shit… Good job.” He says, not really wanting to praise the man either.

Jayson lets out a breath. “So then? Why am I here? Just a congratulations before I die forever?” He asks with a raised eyebrow.

The man could only laugh harder. “Oh, man. You crack me up. There’s no such thing as death man. Don’t be lame. The sinners know this for sure because I force them to experience their eternity, but you probably got a few hints as well.” He says with a smile.

Jayson wasn’t sure what to say about that. “So what then?” He asks, moving on.

The man smiles. “I’m starting to wake people up. Just a few to get the ball rolling, then I’ll even wake up the sinners so they can mess around. But yeah, I’m sending you back with your vision. I’ll also send you a guide; things won’t make sense because the people you meet won’t be seeing what you’re seeing, but yeah, I want you to have a look. You know, tell me what you think about the world.” He says with a wave. He didn’t expect much but it should be interesting.

Jayson leans back and closes his eyes once more. “Fuck man. Am I being punked?” Was all he could say.
