Day 0: The troubles of a teenage girl

Yo quiero que escuches la imagen de mi alma que te ama y te adora como una aventura que nadie ha gozado. Tu nombre quedará grabado para ser dichoso con tu falso amor.*

“Ahh, so that’s what the song really says.” –said Minerva to herself, while laughing at her phone’s screen.

Her laughter soon changed into crying, thinking of how the world kept having fun at her expense.

January 1th, Year 2028. Location: Lima, Peru (South America).

Minerva, age sixteen. This year would be her last year of secondary school. Any normal schoolgirl would be having fun every day, enjoying the last summer break of her school life.

But she couldn’t, not after going through a nasty break up.

Her first love lasted exactly for a year. And it ended seven days ago, December 25th, 2027.

*I want you to listen to the image of my soul who loves and adores you as an adventure nobody has enjoyed. Your name will be engraved to be jolly with your fake love.

Lyrics from “Suspiros”, a popular Peruvian song whose gimmick is that this phrase is sung really fast like a thong twister.

----------------------------------------

Ricardo was already tired of his sister’s crazy antics. He could hear her talking to herself, laughing and crying like a madwoman.

Their parents were worried, even though they decided to give her space. A wait and see approach.

The family vacations overseas were on hold too. Minerva wouldn’t go, even after begging for them all year long. Without her, the main instigator, it would be pointless.

Today was the seventh day and things didn’t seem to get better. He was currently baking a chocolate cheesecake, his sister’s favorite.

“Cake won’t be enough.” –Ricardo murmured while passing by her room.

The problem is he really didn’t know what Minerva’s trouble was. He just knew it had to do with something she did in her virtual console, the night of Christmas.

----------------------------------------

I guess I really need to do it. –thought Ricardo, while going through his mom’s cellphone agenda.

Here it is, Amelia Vela.

She was his sister’s best friend. He really didn’t want to talk to that person; just thinking about it gave him the creeps.

But if it was she, she would definitely know.

What else to say, not even cheesecake worked. And he was getting desperate.

----------------------------------------

“Ricardo!” –exclaimed a high pitched voice on the other side of the phone. –“And I was here thinking it would be really nice to talk to you. Happy New Year!”

“Happy New Year.” –said Ricardo, obviously not amused. –“I called to ask about Minerva.”

“Ahh, I see. But I won’t reveal my best friend’s secrets.” –said Amelia, playfully. –“Not even to dear brother.”

“Have you talked to her since Christmas?” –asked Ricardo.

“Not after I called your house to salute everyone. I sent her a Happy New Year email, but she didn’t reply.” –said Amelia. –“I thought you were already overseas, on your vacations.”

“I wish we were.” –said Ricardo. –“But Minerva won’t go.”

“What?!” –exclaimed Amelia. –“That’s impossible!”

“Yeah, I wouldn’t believe it either.”

----------------------------------------

“I see, then the worst thing happened.” –said Amelia, suddenly in a serious mood.

“And what would that be?” –asked Ricardo.

“I wonder if I should tell you.” –said Amelia. –“Minerva didn’t say it was a secret, but I don’t think she would like you knowing.”

“Please, you don’t know how it has been since Christmas.” –said Ricardo, pleadingly. –“She walks like a zombie through the corridors.”

“And you can hear her in her room, laughing and crying at the same time.”

“Oh, so it got really bad.” –said Amelia. –“Then I shall tell you. But don’t let her realize you know.”

“Promised.”

----------------------------------------

“Do you know about Virtual Connection?” –asked Amelia.

“Is it a virtual console game?” –replied Ricardo.

“Yup.” –said Amelia. –“It’s a fantasy dating virtual console game.”

“Is that what Minerva has been playing?” –asked Ricardo.

“She has been playing since December, a year ago.” –said Amelia. –“And got married in-game six months ago.”

“What?!” –exclaimed Ricardo. Now it was his turn to be surprised.

“Well, in-game marriage isn’t that unusual since it gives you a lot of bonuses.” –said Amelia. –“But it makes you unable to date any other person other than your spouse.”

“And divorces are expensive.”

“I see.” –said Ricardo. –“So it means Minerva and this guy are really close to each other.”

“Any way that I see it, it’s love.” –said Amelia. –“Or it was. Something must have happened.”

“By any chance, is that guy living in Argentina?” –asked Ricardo, putting the pieces together.

“Yeah.” –replied Amelia.

“Minerva was going to tell him about the trip in the Christmas event.”

----------------------------------------

Now Ricardo knew.

Amelia logged into the game and tried to private talk to Johnny33, Minerva’s husband. Well, ex-husband.

He didn’t reply, even though he appeared logged in on the dating service.

The family logs told the story. He divorced Mina17, Minerva’s character, in Christmas night. And he left the family circle soon afterwards.

So the jerk played with his sister for months, even got married to her. And left her the night of Christmas, after she told him she was going to visit him.

There is no way Ricardo would leave things be.

He didn’t know how, but he would make him pay.

Johnny33, you will meet your doom.
