“____” speaking

The sound of a baby crying brought me out of my slumber and back into reality. I really shouldn’t call it a slumber though since it’s closer to a coma. The first thing I noticed was that I hurt everywhere. It’s not the type of hurt you can describe either since spirits don’t exactly have a physical body to hurt, it’s a spiritual hurt, a pain that seemed to pierce my very being. Most of the pain is residual from an earlier incident that makes me shudder when I think about it.
Using a little bit of my energy, I surveyed my body to see if there were any changes that had been made without my knowledge. I went through my checklist. Still an uncorrupted spirit? Check. Not trapped in some inanimate object? Check. Still my lovable four foot, red eyed, red haired self? Kinda check. None of those features had been changed fortunately, or unfortunately since I disliked some of my petite almost childlike features and regardless, I didn’t have the necessary energy to take that form. At the moment I’m just a little flame devoid of all shape and most of my energy, being ripped apart does that to a spirit.
I continued my self check up and everything was fine until I got to my soul, the sight was disgusting. Someone had tangled their soul with mine, binding me to them. A sick treatment of spirits if you ask me, they didn’t even try to get consent. I would have severed the bond if it wasn’t for the fact that my own soul was intertwined into the mix and I lacked the energy to untangle them. The best I could do was shut the other individual out, easy enough since protecting our soul is something most spirits need to learn in order to survive. It would take a lot of my limited energy supply and need constant upkeep, but I didn’t want my thoughts and memories being read.
‘Speaking of this damn binding, what am I bound too?’
I traced the soul link back to it’s host,my captor. The other end entered the baby that had woken me.
‘Ugh. This child must be one of those spirit whatchamacallits. As if this week couldn’t get any worse.’
I thought back a little to see if I can remember what happened to me or if my memory got completely shot this time like it has in the past.
‘I’m a spirit, obviously enough since I’m floating here in the air. My name is Violetta but when asked for a name I always give Vio.’
Spirit’s names are power. Knowing a spirits real name is the same as controlling that spirit, thus why I’m so intent to shut the babe out of my memories and thoughts.
‘To humans I would have been a rogue spirit and to other spirits, a wild spirit. As far as spirits go, I was just a newborn at the lovely age of fifteen. I’m pretty weak when compared to other spirits my age, but my control over my power is about the same as a spirit that’s a couple hundred years old. I’ve got some other skeletons in my closet, but no need to dredge that lake yet, or at all hopefully.’
Even though fifteen seems young, it would be better to say I lived on the battlefield for that duration instead of a comfy house. All of my learning was done while fighting and taking the energies and souls of other creatures. Spirits are sought after by almost every race because we can use raw Arcane instead of that filtered stuff other beings use. Eldritch horrors and abominations, hell anyone with a connection to the Eldritch, want spirits for our souls for food since we store all our power there.
Unauthorized duplication: this tale has been taken without consent. Report sightings.
‘I was taking a scenic tour of the continent and met another seeming “friendly” spirits there. Just my luck, they were part of some crazy spirit cult and I was killed. Sacrificed to whatever strange being they believe in. I don’t trust that it doesn’t exist at this point either.’
For spirits being killed isn’t really a big deal, but it’s still really uncomfortable. It’s like putting out mental state and form through a blender, and calling the mixed up leftovers a spirit. I know the feeling all too well because of a stupid grudge I created. Mortal creatures like human, they're gone for good when they die, but spirits just reform when they’ve collected enough energy to take form again.
‘Somewhere in this process someone snagged me into whatever the hell left me bound to this brat. I would take preemptive action but I’m tired from exerting most of the power I had available to put a wedge into the bond. Speaking of which, where am I?’
I looked around a little more and noticed the others in the room. Since I’m stuck halfway between the material and ethereal plane most of my vision is blurred into a mix of warped colors and shapes. The brat’s easy enough to see since I’m connected to him, but his parents, who are holding him, are much harder to make out. They’re there in both planes and it hurts my head to look at them since I can’t differentiate planes at the moment.
The spirits behind them are easy to see, very bright and monochromatic too. I didn’t recognize either of the spirits and was in no mood to come out of my coma like state to talk to them. They must have seen that I’m active to some extent if their emotions are anything to go off of. I felt like laughing.
‘These idiots fear me. They’ve been around for decades or centuries and they fear me because I showed up half dead and they don’t know me. Unless. . .’
The thought waned into territory that I was not happy about thinking about. Too many close calls and Eldritch there, not a fun time.
This kid isn’t going to try and “use” me for a couple of years so I might as well stay like this for now since it’s efficient for recovering my strength. If i’ve learned anything in my short lifetime it’s that having a plan is almost the best way to ensure your survival. So I’ll follow the best course action available to me at the moment; sleep now, revenge later.

AN: Finally our main character make their appearance! Right little bugger ain't she? Let me know what you though of the chapter. I'd like to know what pace you'd like this to be put up at. One chapter a week or 3~4 every other week? With that done I'll bid you Adieu.
