Chapter 4 : The First Strike

Chapter 4 : The First Strike

The perilous journey to Ironhaven was fraught with simmering tension and palpable uncertainty. Elias, Thorn, Lyra, and the expanding band of rebels navigated with painstaking caution, treading along lesser-known paths and shunning main roads to evade Garrick’s pervasive network of spies. As dusk descended, they sought refuge in secluded spots, keeping a vigilant watch in rotating shifts, all the while remaining on high alert for potential ambushes.

As they neared Ironhaven, the landscape changed from thick forests to open plains and rolling hills, with the city looming in the distance. Its tall stone walls and watchtowers highlighted its strategic importance as a bustling trade hub, with markets and docks brimming with activity. However, it was also a prime target for Garrick's ambitions.

Upon setting up camp a few miles from the city, Lyra called a meeting, where the rebels gathered around a large, makeshift table with a map of Ironhaven spread out before them. Lyra pointed to several key locations and stated, "Garrick's men have been spotted in these areas, preparing for a siege. We need to strike fast and hard to disrupt their plans before they can fully mobilise."

Thorn looked over the map and nodded in agreement. "We’ve identified a few of Garrick’s key lieutenants. Taking them out will sow confusion and weaken their command structure. “Elias listened intently and focused on the task at hand. "What’s the plan?"

Lyra gazed at him, her face grave. "We will divide into smaller units to attack multiple objectives at once. Thorn and I will lead one team to disrupt their supply lines. Elias, you will lead another team to strike their command post."

Elias felt a rush of responsibility and a deep sense of purpose. "I won't let you down."

Under the cloak of night, they advanced towards Ironhaven. Garrick's men patrolled the outskirts of the city, but the rebels were adept at stealth and evasion. They eluded the guards and infiltrated the city, moving toward their assigned targets.

Elias's unit approached the command post, a heavily fortified structure near the city's heart. He carefully surveyed the area, taking note of the guards and the sentries' positions. He turned to his team, a mix of seasoned warriors and fresh recruits. “We need to be quick and quiet," he whispered. "No unnecessary risks. Take out the guards silently and get inside. We need to disable their communications and take down their leaders."

The rebellion fighters, their eyes filled with unwavering resolve, nodded in unison. They skilfully positioned themselves, and at the subtle cue from Elias, they struck. The guards fell without a sound, their bodies vanishing into the cover of darkness. Elias took the lead, his heart racing with anticipation as they infiltrated the building.

Inside, a cluster of officers were deeply engrossed in discussions around a table. The rebels swiftly launched their surprise attack, catching the officers off guard. A brief but intense skirmish ensued before the command post fell into the rebels' hands.

Stolen from Royal Road, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon.

Elias cautiously approached the table, carefully scanning through the assortment of documents and maps laid out before him. Among them were intricate siege plans, detailed troop and supplies lists, and confidential messages from Garrick himself. This cache of information bore the potential to significantly sway the tides in their favour.

A sudden shout reverberated through the building, startling Elias. He whirled around to confront one of Garrick's lieutenants, a brawny figure with a rugged, scarred visage, hurtling towards him with a menacingly drawn sword. Elias barely had a moment to react before the man's blade arced towards him. Elias parried the blow, the clash of steel ringing through the room. The two men circled each other, exchanging fierce strikes. The lieutenant was strong and skilled, but Elias fought with the desperation of a man who had nothing left to lose.

Both men grew weary as the fight dragged on. Elias saw an opening just as the lieutenant seemed to gain the upper hand. After feinting to the left, he lunged forward, driving his blade into the man's chest. After gasping in shock, the lieutenant crumpled to the ground.

His breath came in ragged gasps as he stood over the fallen man. As he looked around at his team, he gathered the documents and secured the area. He said, "We need to get this information back to Lyra." This is our best chance to stop Garrick."

As they swiftly departed from the command post, they made their way back to the designated rendezvous point. Upon nearing the city's outskirts, they were suddenly confronted by a group of Garrick’s well-trained soldiers. A fierce and intense battle erupted, during which the outnumbered rebels fought valiantly but struggled to overcome the enemy forces.

Elias fiercely battled against their adversaries, but ultimately they had no choice but to fall back. Guiding his comrades through the labyrinthine alleys and concealed pathways, they skillfully evaded enemy patrols and melted into the cover of darkness. As they finally arrived at the camp, the first light of dawn crept across the sky, painting a weary yet determined picture of the group.

Lyra and Thorn stood anxiously, their expressions a mixture of relief and worry. "What happened?" Lyra inquired, extending a hand to help Elias up.

"We managed to secure the information," Elias replied, passing the documents to her. "But we were ambushed. Garrick’s men are on high alert. We need to act swiftly."

As Lyra skimmed through the papers, her eyes widened in realization. "This is exactly what we've been searching for," she stated. "We can use this to disrupt their plans and gain some valuable time."

Thorn clapped Elias on the shoulder. "You've done admirably. We've struck a blow to Garrick, but this is only the beginning. We must stay vigilant and press onward."

Elias nodded resolutely. Though he had faced danger, Garrick remained at large. The battle was far from won, and Elias understood the journey ahead would be arduous. However, with stalwart allies like Lyra and Thorn beside him, he felt prepared to confront the challenges ahead.

Together, driven by their shared grief and unwavering determination, they would persist in their struggle against Garrick. The path of retribution was fraught with peril, yet Elias was resolved to see it through to the end.
