Chapter 7- Demons in the chapel

The Vandals, the large black creatures with cracked skin, carried Mercy far away from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. While they carried her, she got to better see what happened to New York City. The same devastation along the roads was a constant throughout the place. The cars jumped the roads, slamming into buildings and various merchandise stands along the road. She hadn’t seen too many monsters, but that has more to do with her ‘traveling companions’ then the monsters not being in the city.

She can’t blame the monsters, considering what happened to the first group that attacked them. The first group were a large pack of massive wolves. All their fur were variants of white, but one thing remained the same among them. Each and every wolf had massive claws and dagger-like canines sticking out of their mouths. When she used [The Eyes of the Dragon] on the wolves, they came up as Dire Wolves, lvl:3.

The pack of just over twenty Dire Wolves attacked the Vandals of the Abyss, rushing in without a plan or tactic. At first, Mercy thought that the Vandals would be slaughtered, and by extension, herself as well. She was quickly proven wrong. The ten Vandals brutally diced the wolves into pieces, proving that they are the apex predators of the area. This also had the side effect of reinforcing the idea that Mercy won’t escape.

She had been conscious, hanging from the pole, for twenty minutes of the walk before they arrived at their location. From the tall, marble spire rising above the building and the gothic design, Mercy assumes that the place is the St. Patrick's Cathedral. The front of it is a colagarmation of white spire stabbing into the sky and swirling arches, leading the way deeper inside. ‘This is not the way I imagined I would come here. I thought that I would get invited one day, not forced by some weird creatures of the Abyss, whatever that is.’

The Vandals carry her underneath the arches and into Cathedral, still hanging out from the pole. During the twenty minutes of dangling, she figured out that the pole is actually a light pole that has been broken on the ends. ‘If only the lights would turn red… maybe this procession would stop?’

St. Patrick's Cathedral is a beautiful place, at least pre world end. There are large marble pillars rising all the way to the tall ceiling above. They are evenly spaced along the walkway to the back of the place. Next to the pillars are pews, stretching far to either side of the walls. Above the end of the pews are more decorative arches, stretching from wall to wall. A long red carpet leads the way to the raised dais that the priest would preach from. The dias itself is raised up above the shiny ground floor. The arches are smaller, leaving gaps for singers to sit during the mass. A white altar sits on the dais, gold light streaming in through the three large windows far above reflect off of it, shining around the room.

Post world end, it is still fairly beautiful, aside from all of the postness. The wide pillars and pews have sanguine splatters all over them. The altar was shoved out of the way, revealing a large circular pattern painted onto the dais in some purple liquid. The floor is still shiny, but now it seems to be polished with blood instead of whatever cleaning fluids typically used. ‘I’m not sure what is worst, seeing the bodies or not seeing the bodies.’

Although there are signs of death everywhere, there are no bodies in sight. It is almost like the corpses just disappeared into the void… or abyss. Even though it isn’t sunday, there should still be just about a thousand or more people in the cathedral. Instead of the people, there are more Vandals and a creature she hasn’t seen before.

The creature stands on two legs, proudly nude like the rest of the creatures from the Abyss. Its skin is gray, just a few dozen shades darker than Mercy’s. It is extremely muscled, like a body builder’s dream. It, like the Vandals, is taller than the average person, about 1.5 times a normal man. Its head mostly resembles a humans. It has violet eyes that seemingly glimmer with knowledge. Long black hair dangles from its head. If it wasn’t for one feature, the creature would have the most handsome face she has ever seen. Sadly, that feature, large curling rams horns that are black, remind Mercy that the creature is, in fact, a monstrous creature that will probably kill and/or eat her.

[Abyssal Demon(Noble), lvl.7]

[Description: One of the higher classes of the Abyss, the Abyssal Demons are directly underneath the barons. They, unlike their serf brethren, can use magic as well as have a strong physical body. Depending on the Noble’s individual ranking, they can make other creatures their knights, stalwart protectors to defend them.]

The Vandals carry her to the dais, where the Abyssal Demon is. They start to converse in their language, causing an extreme headache to rise inside of Mercy’s head. After they discuss, the Vandals cut her from the pole. She unceremoniously drops to the ground like a sack of potatoes.

Right before she hits the ground, a clawed hand catches her by the throat. A second hand wraps around her waist, holding her up so she won’t choke. Once Mercy is properly grasped, the hands carry her up into the Abyssal Demon’s face.

He is even more intimidating up close. She didn’t see it before, but he has large canines like that of a vampire in his mouth. If it wasn’t for one factor, she would’ve been terrified of the creature. That factor is his scent. She noticed it briefly before when she was getting carried around by the Vandals, but all of the creatures so far smell like a mixture of vanilla and lavender.

The creature removes its hand around her throat and drags a claw from the top of her head to the bottom of her cheek, almost like caressing her. To her shock, the creature starts to speak in perfect english, “Hello little white demon.” As he calls her out, a huge grin appears on his face.

Mercy starts to struggle in its hands as soon as she hears what he called her. ‘Why?! Why can I never escape that nickname?! And why the hell is this guy calling me that?’ Seeing that her attempts at struggling aren't going anywhere, she tries another tactic. Talking. “Wh-what do you want?”

“The goddess sent us after the white demon, which is you. She will be so happy that we found you so quick! Just imagining the look of happiness on her face is already bringing me great joy!” As he speaks, the vandals around her start to cheer as well.

‘What is he talking about? Why would a goddess be after me?’ “You’ve got the wrong person. How about you let me go free and I’ll help you look for this ‘white demon’?” Mercy tries to talk her way out of the Abyssal Demon’s grasp.

The grin on his face grows wider as she speaks, “The goddess said that you would try to escape by talking your way out! But you are surely the white demon! You have white skin, though a little more scared then I remember the goddess saying. You also have flawless white hair and red eyes.”

“I-its how I was born! I’m not a demon, I swear.” Mercy starts to struggle again as the Abyssal Demon starts to turn towards the purple circle that she saw previously.

“Sure, whatever you say white demon. Don’t worry a thing, we’ll do our mission and return you home.”

As he carts her to the circle, she notices that four of the Vandals have come from somewhere, carrying four corpses in their arms. The Noble puts her in the middle of the circle and the vandals carry the corpses and put them on four points of it.

Mercy tries to stand up, but before she can move an inch, the Abyssal Demon swings its hand at her. She expected to get slapped, but instead black chains appeared from his hand and forced her to the ground. ‘Is this magic? It’s really tight, I can’t even move an inch.’

Now that she is closer to the purple symbol, she realizes that it isn’t a circle. The purple thing is multiple circles wrapping around each other. In between each of the circles are symbols that hse has never seen before. The spots that the bodies lay in are circles connecting back to the main circle in the middle.

The circle starts to glow around her with a purple light as the corpses slowly start to dissipate. The more that the bodies disappear, the brighter the circle becomes. “You’re making a mistake! Just kill me! You don’t need to do whatever this thing does.”

The Noble gleefully watches what is happening, clapping his hands as the circle gets brighter and brighter. “Don’t worry white demon, the goddess said she wasn’t mad at you for leaving. She said she just wanted to talk.”

Before she can try to talk her way out again, the bodies fully disappear. In the next instant, purple lightning shoots through the air into her body. Extreme agony arcs through her as the lightning evaporates her body, leaving nothing behind. The pain goes away as her vision turns completely black.

[Leaving the Overworld… Quest failed: [Retrieval]... Your soul is splintering....]

Even without her body or senses, the last thing that Mercy feels is pure agony and despair as it feels like her very self is torn in two. Each side feels like it is then ravaged by a million bullet ants before sinking into magma...
