14- Burning whatever stands in the way

Solaria

As I got home, I kept casting bubbles and popping them just to practice, as I couldn't for the life of me understand how to make them move. This time I was looking at the floor so as not to fall victim to another mud bath. The odd Time mage we pass probably was glaring daggers into me by the open use of magic, but unfortunately for them, they could do much to stop me. What would they do? Call the police of society rules? Try and kill me? Good luck finding someone with so much hate they wanted to punish a girl casting magic on the street. As I'm amusing myself with invulnerability to punishment for this kind of faux pas, I distractedly bump into someone.

“Fuck, sorry.” I say quickly, “I'm becoming as much of an idiot as Lunario at this rate.” I mumble it for myself, only then looking up to see who I bumped into. Holy shit, I'm dead. “Hi dad.” Lunario greets, betraying the mix of raging concern and anxiousness that drowned in his voice. Yeasul looks at us with an unamused expression, taking a while to respond, almost like he is wondering why ants were trying to talk to him. “So you must be Solaria, my son has talked a lot about you,” he says with a practiced cordiality of a man well versed in high class ethics, weirdly hiding some deep passion behind the eyes, “and you seem like quite the prodigy to be casting so well at the first week of school, do you mind saying how did you manage this?” He asks, with the flames of his passion flaring when he talks about magic. It was a want… no, NEED for knowing everything of magic, a pool of lava running down a volcano, burning whatever and whoever stands in the way.

“Uhm, I do not know, Sir,” I answer awkwardly, “I just kind of got it, don't even know if I can verbalize it.” And it was technically true, I really had no idea when I learned, but I know now that it was because of luck. I'm not planning on making myself look like a genius, at the same time I'm not sharing any kind of information I don't have to as it will make him force me to spill everything I know. This guy is not only powerful, but obsessed, making a dangerous concoction.

“Well, it is common during the early years to go by instinct instead of logic,” Yeasul says, with the molten rock that is in his eyes subsiding and quieting down, never really going away, “as you grow, you will be able to understand what you are doing and, when you do so, I will always be open to talking. I assume you already know where I live.” ‘Wait, was that an attempt at humor? Am I obligated to laugh or be forced to experience inexistence?’ I thought, hoping he couldn't see it in my face or read my mind as some rumors claimed he could.

“So, why are you here, dad?” Lunario asks with caution, changing the subject and potentially saving me from his eye’s death laser. Surely that rumor is right. “I'm here to have a look at your friend, just have a friendly chat and see you, since you're only going home so late.” He responded with a harsh tone at the end, making a discreet threat underlining it all. ‘Try and stop me, you two are not meeting again’.

He narrows his eyes in a challenge to Lunario, who responds with glaring back, eventually breaking eye contact in sign of defeat. I'm shocked that ‘oblivious king’ Lunario understood that, but I guess this is his dad talking, and that degree of intimacy made communication way easier. Or maybe threats were so common that he got used to identifying them. Yeasul is content with the exchange and turns to face the way I now know to be the way to his house. I'm terrified of having to go to his home, but I'm way more scared of him going to mine, so I will take the little victory when I get t

he chance.
