And so the Trials begin

And so the Trials begin

As the room settled into its steady hum of magic, Kain hesitated near the crystalline desk that had risen for him, his eyes flicking over the strange apparatus lining the walls. Mechanical arms polished unseen objects, enchanted scrolls furled and unfurled as though reviewing themselves, and shelves of bottled lightning crackled faintly. He eyed a glowing orb that floated past, rippling like a miniature galaxy. Equal parts curious and cautious, he finally asked, “So, what exactly does all this involve?”

Freya stepped over to a smooth console embedded in the far wall. With practiced ease, she tapped a series of runes that glowed softly beneath her fingers. The floor across the chamber shifted with a low rumble, runes spiraling outward to reveal a large enclosed structure at the far side of the room. It gleamed with a faint, iridescent light, its surface etched with intricate symbols that pulsed faintly as though alive.

“We'll start with the imitation chamber,” Freya explained, her tone calm but tinged with pride. “It simulates various environments and physical challenges, assessing your strength, endurance, agility, and any natural magical resilience or mastery you may have. Nothing too extreme,” she added quickly, catching the flicker of unease in Kain’s expression. “It’s designed to push your limits, yes, but only to gauge your capabilities—ensuring you’re equipped for life within the Sea-tizin community.”

Haley, already seated at her desk, glanced up briefly from her scribbling, a wry grin tugging at her lips. “You’ll be fine, rookie. It’s basically just an intense sparring match with a side of magical flair. Nothing you can’t handle.”

Kain glanced at her, gesturing toward the glowing quill in her hand as it scratched steadily across the shimmering forms in front of her. “And what about you? What’s all this?” he asked, frowning slightly. “Paperwork?”

Haley rolled her eyes dramatically. “Always paperwork,” she muttered, not even looking up as she filled in another section of runic text. “That’s the magical world for you. Doesn’t matter how much glitter and glamour they slap on it—it’s still forms, forms, and more forms. At this rate, the enchanted quill is doing half my work.” She gave him a pointed look. “You’ll get your turn with this nonsense soon enough.”

Freya smirked faintly but said nothing, instead gesturing toward the imitation chamber. “Back to the task at hand,” she said, her tone turning slightly more instructional. “The chamber adapts to the individual. It will tailor the environment to your abilities and push you only as far as you’re capable. You’ll face simulated scenarios—think extreme weather conditions, obstacle courses, strength tests, and other challenges designed to assess how you handle rapid shifts and unexpected situations.”

Kain took a deep breath, his eyes fixed on the glowing chamber. The faint hum of magic radiated from it, steady and inviting, but the idea of stepping inside still made his stomach churn slightly. “Alright,” he said finally, squaring his shoulders. “Let’s do this.”

Freya’s stern expression softened slightly, her voice losing some of its edge. “Good. The process will only take a few minutes. Enter the chamber when ready.”

Haley, still focused on her forms, waved her quill vaguely in Kain’s direction. “Go show ‘em what you’re made of, Sea-tizin-to-be,” she said with a grin.

Freya stepped aside as the chamber doors slid open with a soft hiss, revealing a glowing interior lined with shifting patterns of light and runes. “Remember,” she added, her voice firm but reassuring, “it’s not about perfection. Just show the chamber how you adapt. The rest will take care of itself.”

Kain exhaled, steeling himself as he moved toward the chamber. Behind him, the faint scratching of Haley’s enchanted quill continued, a rhythmic reminder of the bureaucracy waiting for him on the other side of the test.

The sterile chamber pulsed with energy as Kain stood at its center, the air thick with potential. The massive metallic door hissed shut behind him, the sound reverberating through the space like a final warning. Around him, the featureless silver expanse shimmered, waiting.

A Voice Echoed , cold and detached: “Welcome to the Imitation Chamber. Objective: Demonstrate combat proficiency across varied terrains and scenarios. Duration: Two Hours. Stakes: Survive escalating threats. Each environment will test your adaptability, resilience, and strength. The simulation begins now.”

The silver surface rippled violently, dissolving into darkness. Kain blinked as the world reformed around him, every detail snapping into place with jarring clarity.

Environment One: The Ruined Fortress

The air was cool, carrying the faint tang of stone and iron. Kain stood in the middle of a crumbling fortress courtyard, jagged spires of broken masonry jutting into the overcast sky. Rubble littered the ground, and the faint sound of wind whistled through shattered archways. The metallic scent of blood lingered.

The voice echoed: “Threat Level: Moderate. Engage.”

From the shadows, monstrous figures emerged—hulking brutes with twisted, stone-like skin, their glowing red eyes locking onto him. Their movements were slow but deliberate, their fists cracking the stone floor as they advanced.

Kain rolled his shoulders, a sharp grin pulling at the corners of his mouth. “Alright, big guys,” he muttered, crouching slightly. “Let’s see what you’ve got.”

The first brute lunged, swinging a massive stone arm toward him. Kain moved with impossible speed, sidestepping the strike and slamming his palm into the creature’s exposed side. The force of the blow echoed through the courtyard as the brute staggered, chunks of stone cracking from its torso.

Another charged from behind, but Kain ducked low, catching its leg and flipping it effortlessly into the air. The brute’s body crashed into a crumbling wall, sending debris cascading to the ground. Kain didn’t pause. With a powerful leap, he cleared twenty feet, landing on the creature with enough force to shatter its chest.

The remaining brutes roared, converging on him, but Kain moved like a whirlwind. He grabbed a jagged piece of rubble, spinning it like a battering ram to crush another brute’s skull. As one tried to flank him, Kain vaulted over its shoulder, slamming his heel into its head mid-air, the sheer impact snapping its neck.

In less than a minute, the courtyard was silent, the broken bodies of the brutes scattered across the rubble.

“Environment Clear. Transitioning.”

Environment Two: The Ocean Platform

The fortress dissolved, replaced by the vast expanse of an open ocean. Kain stood on a sleek metallic platform that rocked precariously with each wave. The sky above was stormy, dark clouds roiling as lightning flashed across the horizon. Water sprayed into the air as towering waves battered the platform’s edges.

The voice returned: “Threat Level: Elevated. Adapt.”

From the water, serpentine creatures erupted—slender, eel-like monsters with razor-sharp fins and glowing blue eyes. They darted toward the platform with unnerving speed, their bodies slicing through the water like blades.

The first struck, leaping from the waves with its jaws snapping toward Kain. He caught it mid-air, his fingers digging into its slick flesh before spinning and hurling it into another that had just breached. The impact sent both creatures crashing back into the sea.

Another lunged from behind, but Kain turned with superhuman reflexes, catching it by the throat and slamming it down onto the platform. The creature writhed, but Kain held firm, ripping one of its fins free and using it as a makeshift blade to slice through the next attacker.

The waves grew more violent, the platform tilting dangerously as more creatures emerged. Kain leapt high into the air, narrowly avoiding a coordinated strike. As he descended, he grabbed one of the beasts mid-flight, using its momentum to swing himself around and drive it into the platform with devastating force.

The final creature circled beneath the platform, causing it to quake as it struck from below. Kain crouched low, then launched himself straight into the air, his jump carrying him fifty feet over the waves. He plummeted back down like a meteor, slamming his fists into the platform just as the creature surfaced. The impact sent a shockwave rippling through the water, splitting the beast in two.

“Environment Clear. Transitioning.”

Environment Three: The Volcanic Crater

Heat surged as the ocean dissolved, replaced by the oppressive atmosphere of a volcanic crater. Rivers of molten lava cut through jagged rock, the air thick with sulfur. The ground beneath Kain’s feet cracked and shifted, threatening to collapse at any moment.

“Threat Level: High. Engage.”

Flaming constructs emerged from the lava—humanoid figures made entirely of molten rock, their bodies dripping with liquid fire. Their hollow eyes glowed white-hot as they marched toward Kain, radiating waves of intense heat.

Kain charged forward without hesitation, his body a blur of motion. He ducked under the first creature’s molten swing, driving his fist into its chest. The impact sent shards of molten rock flying, but the creature barely flinched, its body reforming almost instantly.

“Alright,” Kain muttered, backing up. “Tougher than you look.”

He shifted tactics, using the terrain to his advantage. With a powerful leap, he grabbed a jagged boulder, hurling it into one of the constructs. The rock exploded on impact, scattering molten fragments everywhere. Another creature lunged at him, but Kain sidestepped, grabbing its arm and using its momentum to swing it into the lava.

The ground beneath him began to tremble, a geyser of molten fire erupting just feet away. Kain used the force of the blast to propel himself upward, landing on a narrow ledge. The constructs followed, their molten bodies scaling the rocks with ease.

Kain grinned, crouching low. As the first construct reached him, he launched forward with a burst of speed, slamming both fists into its chest and sending it tumbling into the lava below. He spun mid-air, delivering a devastating kick to the next, his foot striking with enough force to shatter its core.

As the last construct lunged, Kain grabbed a jagged spear of obsidian, driving it through the creature’s molten chest. The construct let out a final, guttural roar before collapsing into a pool of liquid fire.

“Environment Clear. Transitioning.”

Kain staggered as the molten crater dissolved around him, replaced by the cool, sterile air of the chamber. His chest rose and fell as he steadied his breathing, the metallic floor cool beneath his feet. His mind raced, fragments of the fight flashing through his thoughts like a fever dream.

The mechanical voice returned, cold and unfeeling: “First Assessment Complete. Results Pending Evaluation. Please Prepare for next Phase.”

Kain straightened, his muscles still humming with the remnants of adrenaline. He wiped a bead of sweat from his brow, his lips twitching into a faint smirk.

“Not bad,” Doc’s voice quipped in his head, smug. “You could’ve used a little more flair, but hey, you survived.”

“Survival isn’t about flair,” Belmont snapped, his tone gruff. “It’s about getting the job done. And you did.”
