In 2180, a collaborative research project, known as Pana, between the University of Pennsylvania, University of Texas, and the University of California-Berkeley, created the nanites Panacea.  An end-all cure-all for every ailment, even, up to a point, age.

The result was the Veritas Renaissance, as researchers had a much longer life to complete their work.

With the discovery of gravitic manipulation and the ion drive, all earthly research was stopped, in favor of space exploration and extraterrestrial colonization.
