VALORIA: RISE & REIGN
7. The Hidden Path

7. The Hidden Path

The sun dipped low over Solandis, casting long shadows across the ruined streets. The city was still a shell of its former self, with crumbling walls and overgrown pathways that spoke of a time when it had been alive with people and purpose. Now, only the echoes of the past remained.

Lira moved swiftly through the deserted alleys, her senses attuned to every sound and movement. She had spent the better part of the day following the faint whispers of a rumor, stories passed down from the old regime about a network of tunnels beneath the city. These tunnels, if they existed, could be the key to reclaiming Solandis without risking a full-scale assault.

"Why would the old regime need secret tunnels?" she had asked Isolde earlier.

Isolde, seated in the dimly lit chamber beneath their makeshift fortress, had answered with a knowing smile. "Power is not only about what is seen, my dear. Sometimes, the true strength of a ruler lies in what remains hidden."

And so Lira had set out to find them, with only a tattered map and her instincts to guide her.

As she rounded another corner, she found herself at a dead end. A high, ivy-covered wall that seemed to be of a different stone than the rest of the surrounding structures. She examined the wall closely, running her fingers along its surface until she found what she was looking for: a small, nearly imperceptible crack. She pressed against it, and with a soft groan, the wall shifted, revealing a narrow passageway descending into darkness.

"Found you," she murmured to herself, drawing a torch from her pack and lighting it with a flint.

The passageway was narrow and winding, its walls lined with old bricks that seemed to absorb the light of her torch. The air was thick with dust, and the silence was broken only by the distant drip of water. She moved cautiously, every step echoing against the confined space. As she went deeper, the air grew colder, and the sense of ancient secrets grew heavier.

After what felt like an eternity, the passage opened into a larger chamber. The walls were lined with faded tapestries, and old crates and barrels were stacked haphazardly in the corners. She moved her torch closer, revealing a large map of Valoria painted on the far wall. Lines crisscrossed the city of Solandis, each marked with cryptic symbols. She recognized the layout immediately, the tunnels were real.

Lira’s heart quickened. She studied the map carefully, tracing the paths that led beneath the city. These tunnels weren’t just a means of escape; they were an entire network for covert operations, an invaluable tool for anyone trying to control Solandis from the shadows.

"Aric will want to see this," she thought, but she wasn’t alone.

A faint rustling from behind a stack of crates caught her attention. She extinguished her torch and crouched low, her hand gripping the hilt of her dagger. She waited, her ears straining for any hint of movement.

A figure emerged from the shadows, cloaked and cautious, moving toward the map on the wall. Lira tensed, ready to strike if necessary. But as the figure moved into the dim light cast by the cracks in the ceiling, she recognized the familiar outline of Eirik Stoneheart.

"Eirik," she whispered, stepping out from her hiding place.

The dwarf turned sharply, his axe half-raised, but relaxed when he saw her. "Lira! What in the nine hells are you doing down here?"

"I could ask you the same thing," she replied, a slight smile breaking the tension.

Eirik chuckled softly. "Heard whispers from the lads about some old tunnels. Thought I’d have a look for myself. Didn’t expect to find you sneaking about like a shadow."

Lira nodded toward the map. "These tunnels are more than just rumors. Look."

Eirik moved closer, his eyes narrowing as he studied the markings. "By the gods... If we control these, we could strike anywhere in Solandis without being seen."

"Exactly," Lira said. "We can use them to move troops, set traps, and gather intelligence, all without the enemy knowing."

Eirik’s face split into a grin. "Aric will be pleased. This changes everything."

Together, they made their way back through the tunnels, carefully retracing their steps until they emerged back into the ruined streets of Solandis. The sun had nearly set, and the city was bathed in a dim, orange glow.

When they returned to the fortress, they found Aric in the war room, poring over a map of Valoria. He looked up as they entered, his expression shifting from concern to curiosity.

"You’re back," he said, his eyes narrowing. "What did you find?"

Lira spread out her own map on the table, her finger tracing the hidden paths beneath Solandis. "A way to take the city without a siege," she said. "The old regime’s secret tunnels. They run beneath the entire capital."

Aric leaned in, studying the markings. "If we use these, we could position our forces right under their noses. We could reclaim Solandis without the bloodshed of an open assault."

"Or worse," Eirik added, "we could be trapped like rats if they figure out what we’re up to."

Aric nodded. "True, but if we’re careful, this could be the key to turning the tide in our favor. We’ll need to scout the tunnels, make sure they’re still passable and that there are no surprises waiting for us."

Lira folded her arms, her gaze steady. "I’ll take a small team. We’ll map it out properly and set up a few safe points along the way."

Eirik grinned. "Count me in. Never liked the idea of a straightforward fight, anyway."

Aric nodded. "Good. We move carefully, and we move quickly. If we can control these tunnels, we’ll have a real chance to reclaim Solandis, and to hold it."

As plans were laid and preparations began, Lira couldn’t shake the feeling that they were on the brink of something significant. The discovery of the tunnels felt like a turning point, a hidden path to a future where Valoria could be whole again.

Yet, beneath her determination, a flicker of unease remained. The tunnels might give them a tactical advantage, but they were also a symbol of the old regime's secrets and betrayals. Power in the shadows could cut both ways, and she knew better than anyone the dangers of what lay hidden beneath.

For now, she would follow this path, wherever it might lead.
