Emma

Bird song, children's laughter, and bright amber rays of sun. Everything was as it should be in Deep Town. So to Emma Winfell it felt like an odd day for a funeral, especially her younger brothers. If her father would even let her call him that. She'd been told he'd died hero, that he had secured a whole squadron's retreat before the "touched" brought him down. As shocking as the news had been she'd managed to stay composed through the day's events. If she had to be honest it was two parts duty to his memory and three parts the need to seek vengeance that kept her from breaking. But she wouldn't admit that. Not now, not ever. The brass had given her leave to mourn but she felt the need to keep moving. So after an uneventful night on the inner walls she tried sleeping off her dread. First thing in the morning she applied for hunting duty. Her father had objected but he had no say in military matters, only being a lesser council member and all. Not to downplay the post at all, he still had sway on this and that. Just not the military. So free rain she had. She'd been given a grant of two thousand lakes that very morning and told to begin recruiting from the volunteers. It was gonna be hard work but she'd get them in shape. And she'd see her brother avenged if it was the last thing she did. Having filed the necessary paperwork for the grant she immediately set out to recruit. When the volunteers had been rounded up it was about noon. She had a stack of reports in hand as they Gingerly made their way into three rows of ten. All in various states of emotion, some looking excited, some in resignation and others with that blank look of loss on their face. There are three ways you end up on hunting duty. Number; one you piss off a superior or generally fuck up real bad, Number; two you family doesn't really need you so they send you, and Number three you're a bit blood thirsty and naïve. Regardless of why they were there she had choices to make. Five to be exact. Five unlucky souls for her hunting team. And of course she had the papers so that was done pretty much beforehand anyway.

"Alrighty blushers I have five names, when you're called step forward and once all five have been selected the rest may go" she called out sternly. "Always fun to see freshlings quivering," she thought. Happy memories of her brother came to mind but she refocused and began calling names. "Sam and Sean Denton'' two decently built, lanky young men saluted and made their way forward, their amber eyes shining with pride. "Mercy Limbtool and Clinton Fuast" they as well stepped up looking much less eager then the previous. "And finally Olivia Sturm" a tall woman saluted and also made her way forward. "Yup she pissed someone off" Emma thought laughing in her head. "The rest of you are dismissed" she called "and you lot" she said with a stiff smile "we have a lot of work ahead of us"
