Chapter 1.1 : Anticipation

Ustogath - A Goblin World

Tavern

“Come, gather around little ones, come here stories of our world Ustogath.” croaked out a old goblin by the Hearth. Tens of small goblins scampered towards the old goblin.

“What do you wish to hear about?” the old goblin asked.

Many voices and topics rang in the air, however the old goblin noticed a small goblin who shouted, “The Origins!”.

‘The Origins eh?’ mused the old goblin. ‘Most young ones would want to hear about mighty warriors, and battles, but this one seems different’.

“Quiet down now children, I will tell of the beginning! Of the world, the gods and our race!” shouted the old goblin, and so he began.

In the beginning there was nothing, only darkness. Our plane existed like this for millennia until a giant rift in space opened. As time went on the rift grew until an object began to come through. The object, was a massive crystal, spanning hundreds of thousands of kilometers in diameter. For millions of years there were no changes to the crystal at all. However as time went on, two spots began to appear on the crystal, one black and one white. The area that these two spots dominated on the crystal was miniscule in comparison to the overall size, but for some reason there was friction between the two.

As years passed the two spots began to grow and in doing so, the crystal cracked. Eventually the conflict got bad enough that the whole crystal split into three chunks. These chunks became what we know as Ustogath, Usala, and Ustor. Ustogath was the largest chunk being nearly 80% of the total space, and what we live on now. Usala being the 10% that was white in color, and Ustor was the 10% that was dark in color. This became the foundation for all that we know, With Ustogath in the middle, and Usala and Ustor orbiting around it.

As time went on, beings of great energy were formed. The first ones to come into existence did so from Ustogath. These beings are what we call the Major Gods. The Major Gods are generally the most powerful gods. However, due to how early they were born, they lack personalities, and are just embodiments of Natural Laws.

Soon after the Lesser Gods, those born from Usala, and Ustor, were born. These gods however had personalities. No one knows why that is the case, but many attribute it to the fact that they were anomalies in the crystal. When the Lesser Gods came into existence there were many less than the Major Gods. Likely, due to the fact that they could think for themselves.

For millennia the Lesser Gods quarrelled among themselves, fighting over Usala, and Ustor. While the Major Gods, began to make Ustogath into a world of its own. They shaped the many continents and oceans, made thousands of mountains and valleys. Even life began to prosper eventually. It was during this time period, that many of the most ancient beast races came around during this time, most spawned from the Nature gods. These demi-god level creatures spread throughout the three realms, and over time the bloodlines thinned, resulting in many of the creatures we have today. Oddly enough, only one of the Major Gods was able to create humanoid creatures, various races began to populate the world, including the Goblin race.

Eventually, the Lesser Gods realized that they would never be able to best each other purely based on the power they have. The Lesser Gods decided to settle the feud by trying to influence the mortals, and pitting them against each other. After hundreds and thousands of years wars had spread all over the three realms, however throughout history there would be individuals who were blessed by the Major Gods, and could set up their own domain. These people were called Domain Lords...

Looking up, the old goblin realized that the little goblins were sleeping. The old goblin chuckled and slowly stood up. He was preparing to leave when he was interrupted.

“Storyteller, are you done? I wanted to hear more!” said a small goblin.

“Ah, young one, what is your name?” asked the Old Goblin, “You are the only one of the young ones still awake, and you are the one that asked the question originally!”

“My name is Rook!” replied the small goblin.

“Rook? Thats a good name!” praised the Old Goblin, “What do you want to do when you grow Rook?”

“I want to be an traveler! Exploring the world, and having adventures.” Rook said.

“That’s a good goal to have young one. However, it is a path that is immensely dangerous! You must be careful if you wish to have adventures. Many goblins leave the village when they grow but very few ever come back.” warned the old Goblin. “ Now, go on and wake the other young ones. You should all be going home now, as it’s quite late.”

Rook ran over to the other children and began shaking each one while saying, “Wake up! Time to go home!”

Grumbles escaped the mouths of the other children, but soon they had all gathered together, and started to set off. Just before the group got out the door, Rook shouted “Thanks for the story Oldie!” With that, Rook escaped out the door.

After stepping out of the tavern, Rook could see the village glowing below. Torches were lit in the majority of houses, and buildings giving the village a warm feeling. Rook could even see quite a few torches moving about in a well organized manner, those which he assumed to be the night patrol. ‘Such a beautiful sight.’ Rook remarked to himself. His gaze capturing the image, before turning away and running after his group.

“Wait for me!” Rook shouted as he ran to catch up. ‘You all move to fast! Take in the sights sometime!’ Rook grumbled to himself as he rejoined the group. As soon as Rook was in earshot of the group he realized that they were in the midst of a conversation.

“...need more food to last the coming winter.”  said one of the Goblins.

“We’ll have to send out groups to go get food.” Remarked one of the larger goblin, “Maybe we can get some meat this time around too.”

“It’s not likely.” responded another goblin, “Not a single one of our denmates are even a rank one fighter.”

“You’re right.” replied the larger goblin. Turning to the rest of the group he said, “Tomorrow when we send groups to the forest you all need to prioritize your safety. Don’t get over confident and fight anything you can’t handle.”

“We won’t!” promised the group of goblins.

The group soon arrived at the den they all shared. The den was rather worn looking, with only tattered scraps of cloth covering the doorway, and with very little in terms of decoration or furniture. However this den was like many others across the Kingdom of the Stonecraze. Dens such as this one we’re only meant for raising the children and as such they didn’t need any sort of comforts. Only when one became a fighter would they be allowed to leave the den, and finally get a house of their own.

However, it isn’t as bad as it sounds. Each goblin living in the den is given a room, and a straw bed in order to keep everyone happy.

After enough discussion, the larger goblin Nuk announced, “Remember, tomorrow will be the first day that allows the newly of age goblins to join us! In the morning you will be put into teams of three. These teams will last you atleast until you can become fighters, so make sure to get along!”

“Any idea of who will get put into what teams?” Asked a goblin.

“No! Honestly, it’s out of all of our hands, so there’s no point in worrying about it! Just go get some rest, you’ll need it for tomorrow!” Replied Nuk.

After Nuk’s declaration, the newly of age goblins were very excited, and began to chatter away, boasting about how their groups would each be the one to bring back the most food. However the differing opinions resulted in wrestling matches, even though they had no idea who else would be in the group.

After looking over the group of potential team mates, Rook decided it wasn’t worth worrying about, and quietly snuck away to his room. Although Rook wasn’t worried about who would be on his team, he was feeling overwhelmed from just one thing…

Anticipation.
