Chapter 2. A New Friend

Chapter 2. A New Friend

I woke up early in the morning from the sunlight breaking through the holes within my makeshift shelter. Luckily i had been able to sleep without any interruption from the outside world. I slowly got up and stretched before heading to the next town. The trip to town was pretty uneventful, with nothing except for myself to be found within miles in any direction. I hated walking it was so boring and it mad for such a slow pace of movement, but alas here I was walking through the uneven terrain in a crappy pair of shoes that I had fashioned together from 2 rabbit hides that were barely holding. I needed to think of a plan, how would I be able to get enough money to get the supplies that I needed to continue.

All of a sudden I heard a sharp scream. Wait what the hell was that? Then i heard it again. It sounded like the desperate cry of a man. I ran carefully towards the sound of the screaming, making sure that I wasn't being seen by anyone. As I was getting closer the sounds of the screaming were getting worse and worse. I finally made it to an opening and I saw what was going on there was a carriage pushed over on it's side with a horse tied to it struggling about, trying to free itself. There was a man rummaging through the back of throwing things behind him looking for something. Finally there was an old man lying on the ground, moaning in pain.

I knew I had to do something, I couldn't just walk by and continue on my quest. It was at this moment that I knew that I had to help all of those in need, to honor the death of my family and prevent that from happening to anyone else. Right now this old man needs my help, I am going in. I slowly creep up on the man and pull out my dagger, closing the distance between me and this newly acquired enemy ever so slowly. As I get closer and closer I can feel adrenalin surging through my veins. I turn to the old man who now sees me and I put my index finger to my lips, signalling him to keep my presence unknown. I raise my dagger slightly above the strangers neck and as I am about to strike, the man notices me, turns and strikes me in the chest with his curled up fist. The blow knocks me to my knees and takes my breath from me. I get up as fast as I can to avoid his next swing. He is quick, I am barely able to dodge him before the next strike comes crashing in towards me. I can't do this much longer, I need to act quickly. With all of my might I swing my dagger at him, making contact with his right shoulder. Knowing that he cannot continue with his wound the man runs to the bushes. I fall to me knees bloodied, bruised, and gasping for breath.

I sat there for a moment before I heard the old man gasp out in pain “come here, boy”. I had completely forgotten about the man in my moment of weakness. I stumbled towards the old man before falling again beside. “you have the courage of none I have ever seen, but you fight like that of a child” he choked. “thanks, I think” I breathed out. He moved his hand away from his chest revealing a knife wrenched into his chest. I looked wide eyed at him, I had been too late to help him. He looked at me and said, “take my horse Arion, to the town of Grolsh and find the man who goes by the name Nicolas Molson. Tell him that I have sent you, promise me this”. “But who are you and what was that man looking for” I demanded. “Simply show him this necklace around my neck, and he will know what to do” as he finished these last words the life faded from the man, leaving me confused, hungry broken and with nothing but the request of a dead man.
