Alias: The Whistler
Subject #24 Titled "The Whistler" is a very specific entity known only by few. Its powers are described as the following: Nature manipulation (Such as trees stay still and wind disappears), making all creatures around it feel uneasy, sometimes sending them into a full on panic attack. But out of all of those there is one attribute to it that was told by the sole witness of this said entity. He argued that while looking at the Whistler, he felt safer than ever before.
The following are the characteristics that were shared by the survivor.
It must have been at least five feet and eight inches tall
The survivor said he could barely see his facial features. Sometimes he got confused, as if his face was always changing.
No matter where he heard the whistle, he could look around and see the entity at any distance. He said he was once on top of a building, looking down on him.
Here is his testimony:
"S-sir, I do not know what I have seen." He was shaking immensely. This was the first encounter with this entity. He could barely keep his composure. But he continued.
"I was walking back home from taking Mark to school when I noticed everything was quiet. Too quiet. I took a look around and saw nothing but the town I live in. I thought it was weird that no one was outside around me. I could've sworn there were cars driving and people walking all around. But not when I looked up." He started shaking and hyperventilating harder.
"I'll get you a coffee, sir" Said one of the detectives on the case. He returned shortly after with a nice warm cup of coffee. "Please start from the beginning." Said the detective.
Part One: The uninterrupted walk
On the Monday morning in June, Thomas was getting his son, Mark, ready for school. With only those two left in the house since Tom's wife and Mark's mother had died, it had been quiet around the house. They tried their best when it came to bonding. They knew they had to try at least. Tom would invite Mark to do all sorts of things like bowling, play baseball and even go to the movies. Mark wanted nothing to do with that. Mark understood what his father was trying to do but he couldn't bring himself to do it. Not yet, it's been so soon since his lovely mother has passed. One thing Mark would allow was the fact that Tom would take him to school and bring him back when he was out. Tom said it was for his safety but Tom just really wanted to be with someone right now. Especially family.
"Eggs are on the table, bud." Said Tom to Mark.
Mark thanked him by lightly nodding his head in sign of approval. They barely talked at home but Tom was still grateful for any little interaction with him.
"I also made your lunch and threw in some soda and candy. Don't let the others have it!" Tom said with a genuine laugh. Mark returned the laugh. Tom had a contagious laughter that even Mark could not deny.
After finishing their dinner, Mark decided it was his turn to do the dishes. And while he was doing that, Tom was making sure Mark had everything he needed today since today would be one of his biggest exams of the year.
"Are you nervous for the test, buddy?" Tom asked.
"Kind of but I studied a lot so I'll be alright... Right?" A small chuckle
"You are the smartest kid I know, man, I know you got this. You got those brains from your mom. And you got the good looks from me!" They both laughed at that one. This morning was going over very well and they were both enjoying it. Maybe the time is coming to sit down and fully talk about what happened. Not yet, but it's getting there. After all the chores were done and all the bags were checked, it was time to go.
"Ready, Mark?" Tom yelled up the stairs. Apparently Mark forgot to put on deodorant, which he has said before 'it helps the ladies like me more'. Tom always loved the way Mark would turn anything into flirting with girls.
As they walked out of the door the sun blasted them in the face. They both covered their eyes and grimaced at the same time.
"I forgot about the sun for a minute considering how dark it is in the house."
Mark was heading for the car but Tom stopped him. Mark looked back at his dad and shrugged his shoulders, waiting for an answer.
"We're cooped up in the house all day. I think we should take advantage of this beautiful day and walk to the school."
Mark sighed at first but said: "I hate walking but I know you're right. Lead the way" As he gestured toward the driveway. Tom chuckled, sort of feeling like a king at that moment.
The weather out here in Higate was very beautiful. The town itself was small and everyone knew everyone. There of course were always those few bag eggs that would spray paint walls, egg houses and bully other kids but it seemed like every town ever had those types of kids. They would get punished reasonably and would stop their nonsense for a while, picking it back up again at a later date.
A case of theft: this story is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.
"Your moms birthday would've been next week, you know?" Said Tom, not even trying to stop the words from coming out. Mark looked at him with a sad face.\
"I'm sorry I brought it up. It came out of nowhere but I was wondering something. Maybe you and I can go out to her favorite restaurant and have dinner in her honor." This idea sparked Mark with delight.
"That's a fantastic idea, dad!" It really was. They both ended that conversation before anything else was said. That unprompted discussion ended way better than they ever could've thought.
Finally arriving at school, Tom gave a big warm hug to Mark.
"I won't be home until late. I got dinner over at Ethan's house, ok?" Tom completely forgot about that but assured Mark it was alright and that he would be fine. They waved goodbye and Tom made his way back home.
Part Two: The interrupted walk
As much as Tom loved walking around with his son, it was moments like these that he loved the most. Quietness. Nothing but time to reflect and think on. He would often think about all the good times he had with his wife while they were growing up together. Even though they were happy memories, he would always shed a few tears. Sometimes he would even have to stop so he can sit and fully cry. Today was one of those days.
The fact that the birthday comment came up reminded him of all the birthdays he ever had with her. He didn't want to be seen in public since there were people already giving him the side-eye. So he made his way into the forest next to him. He liked this forest because it was the one he played in with his wife Leah, back when they were kids. He went to their favorite group of trees so he could let it all out and cry. It was ok to cry. No matter the gender or age. You have to let it out at some point and Tom knows it.
After what felt like hours of him remembering all the fun times in the forest they had together, he started to cry again. He would choke on air, his face swell up, and the tears just kept coming. But then everything went silent. The sound of cars and people walking at the edge of the forest were now gone. The birds chirping and the trees swaying were also gone. His whole body was filled with dread and depression. Of fear and Death. Until he looked up. He saw an all black figure, around five feet and eight inches just a few feet away from him. After a few moments it was no longer a black figure but a person. A very handsome young man with a lovely smile. All of that previous depression he felt went away the moment he saw that smile.
The man was still the same height but had very brown hair when Tom looked at him. Now thinking about it, Tom noticed he actually had silver hair and that this man was quite old. The man crouched down to Tom and Tom flinched back. Opening his eyes he once again saw the handsome young man from before, brown hair and everything.
"I'm not here to hurt you, my friend." The Figure said with a smile.
"I am here as a friend that will comfort you in your time of need. Something big will happen in your life and you will need emotional support." Tom stared at him. His wife already died last week, this guy is kind of late.
"How can you help me then?" Tom asked, still crying.
The figure wiped off Tom's tears and smiled. "I bring happiness when it is needed in harsh times. You feel better now, don't you?"
Tom did feel better in fact. He was still crying but he wasn't sad anymore. It was as if all of his pain was lifted away from him. The man started to get up but Tom grabbed his arm. "Where are you going!?" Tom cried.
"I will be back, don't worry, my friend." Then he walked away. In the blink of an eye, he was gone. Everything around Tom was now back to normal. He could hear people talking around the forest and can see the cars through the leaves. After a few seconds of sitting there, Tom had a large pain in his head, falling over and knocking out.
Part Three: Interrogation
"I swear that's all I know. That was my whole day up until you guys hit me over the head and dragged me here." He wondered where they were in the first place. The police department in town didn't have any holding cell that looked like this.
"Are you sure that is all that happened? We need all the information we can get and we have non-traditional methods of getting them." One of the detectives said threateningly. All Tom did was nod his head
"Can I please go now? I have to pick up my son from his friend's house later." Tom started to tear up again.
"We're going to make sure that is in fact true before we do anything with you. Detective J, you stay with Tom here and try to find out more. I will go get info on his son." Detective J nodded and turned his attention to Tom.
"I'm sorry for all of this. Especially after your wife's death last-"
"HOW DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THAT?" Tom demanded
"I'm sorry for upsetting you but we know everything about everyone if we need to. You encountered something we were looking for so we had to do our research into you beforehand. That is all. I hope you can forgive us. Our true intentions aren't to hurt you but rather help you get your life back to normal." J said with a big charming smile.
"Will that thing hurt me or my son?" Tom said quietly.
"We're not sure. You're the first person to encounter it. We had readings all over this town for a long time and we're happy to have some sort of lead."
"Readings?" Tom asked.
"We have these devices that can read large amounts of strange materials in the fourth dimension. It's really quite a lot more than that but I will describe it like that for you since you have had a long day."
After looking around the room a bit, Tom noticed this holding cell was actually quite nice. It was clean, no bars on the windows, and even had a cooler of water in the corner. He has never been in jail so he doesn't have much to compare it to but he has visited the county sheriff station in town a few times with his wife to bring brownies and cookies.
It felt like forever until the other detective came back. The returning detective brought J over to the side and whispered something in his ear. J looked back at Tom then back to his partner and nodded.
"Where did you say your son was going after school, Tom?" Asked J
"He's going to his friend's house to have dinner with his family. His friend's name is Ethan. I don't know his last name so I can't help you there."
"Ethan Moore" Said the other detective.
"Yeah! That rings a bell. Why do you ask?" Asked Tom. Then when he noticed the detectives' looks on their faces, he went into shock too.
J started "I'm sorry, Tom, but Ethan's family got into a car accident on the way to the restaurant. Your son was also in the car. No one made it. I am so sorry for your loss." J went over to grab Tom's shoulder but Tom got up and left the room. The detectives tried stopping him but he would not budge.
After he got outside he turned around to see the county sheriff's office building in town. How could that be? Some kind of illusion? Just in time for the sheriff to quickly run up to Tom, telling him the news and that he had to go to the hospital right away. Tom would follow and the sheriff would drive.
Once they got to the hospital, Tom had to verify if the body was that of his son, Mark. He was able to tell it was in fact Mark even through all of the burn marks. He felt nothing but numbness all around his body. Not even noticing he was already outside the hospital sitting on a bench to the side. A few minutes later of silence - not even hearing the voices of people walking by or the cars on the highway - someone sat down beside him.
"I am so sorry for your loss, Tom." Said a familiar voice.
Tom looked next to him and saw the same man that was in the forest. He could've taken a hit at him or screamed at him but deep down he knew it wasn't his fault. Tom started to cry and the man held him, assuring him everything will be ok from now on.
