Gods were omnipotent. For a long, humans prayed to Gods - wishing for something to change. Their prayers were largely ignored, however. Gods realized breaking the rule of the world itself would not result in good for humans. But nonetheless, humans prayed to Gods, even sacrificing their own fellow specimen.
Incalculable times later, humans evolved themselves. They started to build dwellings, begun farming and changed the landscape to suit their needs. The human population grew fast - and evolving themselves, beyond God's knowledge. To regain God's eternally omnipotent force to command nature, Gods transformed themselves into humans. As humanity evolved, its speed of evolution multiplied.
To adapt, Gods bound themselves closer with humans; as time progressed, Gods looked more and more humans than ever.
Humans, now past nature and God's restraints, evolved themselves like no other critters. Long gone are the barbaric instinct of men; they became Gods themselves. Humans were now invocating to their own Gods - the first almighty Deities were now long forgotten. Gods chose to convert themselves into human Gods.
A long, long time has passed.
Gods lost their omnipotence but retrieved command over humans. And to control humans, they made proxy deity to rule humans. There were many of them, but one was the most important.

Kuni-no-tokotachi was its name. It made its own Gods, named Izanagi and Izanami, later described by humans as creators. Their lives and history are well known. Times later, Izanagi made creatures called Witches to stabilize Japan. There were a total of seven. Each of them looked different - all of them were made with long, white hair, red eyes and a caucasian look to differentiate them from Japanese. They had unique abilities, with perpetual vigour and superhuman strength; their body could reconstruct in instants, even if they were hammered by explosives and knives.
In the history of Japan, many times have they appeared - all in the era of strife and civil war. And Izanagi had them bring peace to Japan; again throughout history. After their purpose was achieved, witches were put back to slumber - until their power was needed.
As time passed, humans evolved even further. Humanity begins to possess almighty power over every creature on earth; the ones that Gods have created and protected. Gods, one after one, started to fade; losing their purpose of existence, they erased themselves from reality.
The time when men begin to build their own creature, all Gods were now gone. Humans no longer required Gods. Now they were the only godlike presence on the planet.
Proxy deities, remnants of Gods, decided to wake up witches once more. Now that Gods no longer exist and humans wield control over every aspect of nature, they have chosen to release them to the human world.
Without purpose, witches were given the liberty to do whatever they desired.
In modern-day Japan, witches now strive for a purpose of their own.
After hundreds of years of slumber, their last mission is given to them.
