The Confession

The following week, Alex found himself standing outside the school gym, his heart pounding in his chest. He had decided to take Mia’s advice and tell Ryan how he felt. It was a risk, but one he was willing to take.

Ryan emerged from the gym, his hair damp with sweat and a towel slung over his shoulder. He spotted Alex and smiled, making his way over. “Hey, Alex. What’s up?”

Alex took a deep breath, his palms clammy. “Hey, Ryan. Can we talk for a minute?”

Ryan’s smile faltered slightly, but he nodded. “Sure. What’s on your mind?”

Alex led him to a quiet corner of the school courtyard, away from prying eyes. He took another deep breath, trying to steady his racing heart. “Ryan, there’s something I need to tell you. It’s been eating me up inside, and I can’t keep it to myself any longer.”

Ryan’s brow furrowed in concern. “What is it, Alex?”

Alex looked into Ryan’s eyes, finding the courage he needed. “I like you, Ryan. More than just a friend. I know you’re straight, and I don’t expect you to feel the same way, but I had to tell you.”

Ryan’s eyes widened in surprise, and for a moment, he was silent. Alex’s heart sank, fearing the worst. But then Ryan spoke, his voice gentle. “Alex, I… I don’t know what to say. I value our friendship a lot, but I don’t feel the same way. I’m sorry.”

Alex forced a smile, though his heart ached. “It’s okay, Ryan. I just needed to be honest with you.”

Ryan reached out and placed a hand on Alex’s shoulder. “I appreciate your honesty, Alex. And I hope we can still be friends.”

Alex nodded, grateful for Ryan’s kindness. “Yeah, me too.”
