Prologue: Taking a Bullet

Prologue: Taking a Bullet

Baltimore, 2015 AD, 10:39 pm

“I don’t know Charlie, should we be out here this late?” Xavier asked his older brother, worry and fear clear in his voice “Mom said we shouldn’t be out this late while visiting Uncle Will, she said it was da-” He was cut off abruptly by his brother before he could finish.

“Fuck Mom Xae, not literally, but fuck her. She has no idea what she’s talking about here, it’s not like we’re in the most gun violent city in the entire United States or anything, we’ll be fine.”

“But… we are in the most gun vio-”

“We will be fine Xae.”

“If you say so, if we get shot though, it’s your fault.” Xavier retorted with a bit of sarcasm.

It took all of five minutes for them to find trouble. Xavier and Charles were about to walk into an alley for a quick pee break on the nearest wall, when they walked into an active drug deal, not the small stuff either. The people they had walked in on had bags of what suspiciously looked like cocaine, but might very well be confectioners sugar, but he doubted it. Just as they turned to leave, they heard the very distinct click of a gun hammer being pulled back.

“Now just where do you think you boys are going?” a gruff voice said calmly from behind them. They both started to turn at the same time, no longer needing that pee break from earlier and came face to face with the man behind them. Or more like face to dick, this man was at least 7 feet tall and their eyes were level with his balls. When they looked up, they could see many tattoos and a shiny bald head with a huge scar. How clichè could you be? Charles spoke first, not that it was very difficult, Xavier couldn’t even breathe right now, let alone speak.

“M- My brother a-a-and I were just walking a-away,” Charlie stuttered in fear. “we could see y-you guys selling some p-powdered sugar down there and would be happy to get g-going if you would let us.” Charles continued as he tried to turn and leave, when a massive hand grabbed around his whole head and stopped him.

“Now son, you look to be old enough to know that that was not any kind of sweetener, and that it was crack. If you were not old enough to know, you do now, so now we have to kill you. We could, however, let you go if you make us a promise.” Xavier could see exactly where this was going, it was just getting more clichè by the moment. He knew they were going to die here. He would have chuckled at the absurdity of it all if he wasn’t so terrified.

“If you promise not to tell anyone about this, we can let you go, now, say you promise.” he suddenly demanded, but the two brothers wasted no time in responding, no matter how futile it was.

“WE PROMISE!” they said in unison, then both started running, Xavier was the slower of the two and could see the man starting to level his gun at Charles as they ran.

“NOOOOOOO!!!!” he screamed out as he lunged for the path of the bullet. He heard a crack, then felt unimaginable pain for a ten year old in his gut. It felt like a two foot long icicle had just been driven straight through his gut, except indstead of cold it was just more shades of pain. He then felt a more dull pain as he landed on the ground and hit his head on the ice cold, jagged concrete. He then heard screaming, then he realized that screaming was coming from his own mouth, he wanted to stop, but he couldn’t, the pain was too much to do so. He then could very faintly hear sirens and more cracks of gun fire over the screaming that he realized was not just his own, his brother's voice was also in the chorus. At least he wasn’t dead, for that he was sure. Speaking of dead, his vision was getting awfully blurry due to lack of multiple fluids, one was pooling around him and the other was already cooling in his pants.

‘Please don’t die dude, you’re too young to die!’ he thought to himself before he passed out from blood loss and pain.
