The Initiation

The Initiation

I pulled my unmarked vehicle into a spot in the parking lot of a famous café here in Miami . I exited the car, taking a few deep breaths of the fresh air, observing my surroundings, the people that walked by, the music, the sound of the chaos, the smell of the freshly brewed coffee. I glanced behind me and directly into the window of my car. My partner, Sergeant Jacob Flint seated in the passenger seat scanning files that we brought one final time. Just by the look of him, you wouldn't know that Jacob was a cop, he looked more like a surfer by day but I knew first hand, you doubt his intelligence? You're fixing to get proven wrong and slammed on the ground once or twice.

I sighed, I turned around and headed back to the side of the car where Jacob was.

"You sure about this lead Iz?" Jacob asked, he peaked his head out of the car window, his voice tensed with a whole lot of skepticism to which made me smile.

I laughed out loud again, I removed my glasses and got somewhat in the face of him.

"You've spent every single day with me, getting into some sort of new trouble day after day after day. We've used Carlos before. He's never let us down. If he says the armed deal is going down tonight, then it's going down tonight. He's never lied to us before; He's never lied  to me before because he knows what I am capable of. I don't see why now of all times is the time for him to start fooling me. And besides Flint, when this does go down, events like this usually get hot and heavy, you get to threaten people with your sidearm. Are you really complaining?" I said with the utmost sarcasm.

Jacob laughed too, he took a sip from his latte. "Hey, woah woah, who said I was complaining? I trust you're instincts. You're right, if he hasn't lied to us, especially with something to this nature, why would now be the time to start? It just seems like a lot of heat for one night of excitement. But yes, Izzy, you're right. I'm not complaining if it's a case where I get to use my weapon." He'd laugh.

If you stumble upon this narrative on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.

I rolled my eyes at the amount of weirdness that was on display with him even though I couldn't help but let a smile appear on my usually serious face whilst I am at work. Jacob's laid back cavalier attitude was both aggravating and sensational. How he could be so calm when things could very well be going down in a short time? It was a sight and it annoyed me to my core, I didn't admit that to him though.  I opened the back door, I grasped a black box under the back seat, I sighed as I opened it slowly, taking out my gun from the casing, I checked the clip followed by putting it in the holster. The familiar weight of the gun made me feel grounded and steady.

I cleared my throat after acquiring my sidearm.

"Let's move hotshot." I joked as I to his surprise, opened Jacob's door sarcastically.

We marched side by side throughout the streets of Miami. The streets were alive with the sounds of residents talking and laughing, some playing music of all different kinds. Jacob and I tried our best to blend into the crowd and make sure that we were not noticed as cops but as two common folks. We moved through the groups of people, our destination, a dimly lit alley where Carlos had insisted the deal was about to take place.

As we headed down the alley, the sun began to fade as the buildings overtook the alley. I could feel tension brewing from the anticipation of foreshadowed confrontation. I exchanged a glance with Jacob who had a completely different look on his face, he looked excited but tried not to show it. The alley was a complete 180 from the lively streets of Miami. It was darker, narrow, with trash bins lining the walls at every corner, some knocked down, the smell of rotting trash a clear presence in the air. My senses were on high alert. No matter what, we knew the goal.

A figure emerged from the shadows. It was our informant. Carlos. His lean frame and common face even noticeable in the dim lighting of the alley. He gave a quick nod of approval to me before melting back into the darkness. The direct signal we had been waiting for. It was indeed go time...
