Chapter 2
The boy awoke to the cries of a pig leaping up quickly he snatched the knife up and went into a defensive stance and stood perfectly still until it went silent the cackles of an imp broke the silence.
Cautiously he crept to the barrier and peered over. standing there were three imps one was obviously the leader his skin a darker red, and he was slightly larger than the other two. Deciding that attacking the big one would be best he positioned himself so he could leap off at the big imp. He leaped and at the same time brought the knife down onto the leader's head. It smashed into the thing causing it to slump over almost immediately. The boy stopped for a moment really thinking about what he had just done. He was pulled from his thoughts by the savage screams of the imps, he brought the knife up and continuing his motion he brought it swinging horizontally at the next imp smashing into its ribs. His fist did more damage than the knife flinging it into the wall and whipping around on the last imp he held the knife ready. The imp looked at his two fallen companions then at the boy and smiled. With surprising quickness, he wrenched the knife out of his hands and tossed it away, almost casually.
The boy didn’t let that stop him though and slammed his fist right into the imp’s rib cage and wrenched savagely, it hissed in pain but brought up one of the clawed hands smashing it into his temple. Stunned he stumbled back and coincidently he fell next to the knife, quickly swinging it up and around he opened a large gash that seeped blood it looked down in astonishment, that was its last mistake twirling the knife into a reverse grip and stabbed it into the side of its throat. With confusion evident in its eyes the thing topped to the side. The dying groans of the imp echoed but it wasn’t dead yet. Again with that same speed, he lashed out and left long deep cuts against his chest and shoulder. Both fumbled away, the imp winching and the boy smirking, through the pain, and nausea. The imp’s head finally fell to the ground.
Sighing, the boy fell back to the hard stone beneath him and let out his first laugh in what felt like years, even if it had only been days. He lay there breathing as deeply as he could to calm the adrenaline that had rushed through his system. He had to stop the bleeding. He pulled his shirt off and wading it up, and held it to the cuts, he felt around his temple wincing when he felt the blood and bruises. Looking slowly around so as not to move and thus disturb his painful wounds, he examined the items the imps had left. They all had the typical things: monster core, leather, twine, and bones but the leader imp had quite a few more bones and the largest monster core and two pieces of leather. Slowly sitting up he kept applying pressure to the wounds and gathered up the items he turned to the pig the imps had killed. It slowly started to disintegrate into ashes, he watched it in curiosity. After around thirty seconds the whole thing disintegrated and the items were there this time though he got some new things! The pig had dropped four pieces of leather, he now had yet another ball of twine, a monster core about as large as the leader of the small group of imps, and three slabs of decent-looking meat wrapped in yet more leather he quickly gathered all of his treasures and scrambled over the barrier heading back to the camp. Once he was back to his temporary camp he was again surprised by a screen.
You have the items to upgrade

Backpack?
The boy wondered what inventory would be like. Was it like an extra dimension or something? Or was it just a larger backpack? Who knew but he quickly divided up his items from all the demons including the pig he unwrapped the meat and set it atop his hoodie so it wouldn’t get dirty setting the ten leathers the two balls of twine and the fifteenth of the small bones. After laying them out he held the pendant over the objects. A warmth filled him that he didn’t quite recognize but was all the same familiar. All of the items were quickly sucked into the pendant including the backpack. The boy let out a cry of alarm as everything he owned disappeared right in front of him. He tapped hard on the pendant and another screen appeared
Inventory grade: Common
Hold 20 different items
Can be held in groups of 10
before taking up another slot.
Items placed in inventory are perfectly
Preserved items (such as food
will no longer rot or go bad)
Well, that solved the problem of preserving food, but how did he access it? Suddenly a void the size of his backpack opened up in front of him. He stepped back and it moved backward with him. This was extremely weird, he thought. He shrugged off the thought. If this thing helped him survive until someone came to save him he would use it. Pushing his hand into the void he withdrew one of the notebooks and smiled. Pretty straightforward. He pushed the rest of his items into the inventory, he continued until he reached the monster cores. He looked at the four beads, two small and two larger ones rolling them around. He decided to not waste the cores quietly yet, he had no idea how many abilities he could have. So waiting for a higher grade of the core could be a better choice. With a grunt, the boy shoved the cores into his inventory. After collecting all his things he set out thinking that if he stayed in one place for too long the imps would discover him.
Quickly clambering over the barricade he had made he set out, the small knife drawn in preparation of an attack. Peeking his head from the crevasse in the stones that formed the valley he surveyed the surrounding area. While the red mist blocked most of his sight he could still see around a hundred yards in all directions. Satisfied that he was safe the boy stepped out from the hidden cavern and set out in a random direction. Holding onto the knife like a lifeline his head on a swivel the boy crept through the hundred of screams and roars trying to make his way to some sort of shelter for the night the black trees seemed to close in around him like gnarled grasping hands, the mists ever-present presented a constant annoyance, the dark red stone had mostly turned to a black and gray sand that crunched underfoot sounding more like gravel then actual sand. Many bones littered the ground, large and long a few spines the ocartional talon or claw, however not seeing the bite marks that covered them the boy walked onward. Finally, after hours of walking, he found a cave. The boy looked at the form of his salvation. Taking a deep breath, he truly looked around the area for the first time. It was a boneyard. They all had some sort of damage whether that was from long ago battles, time, or having been someone's meal. Swallowing hard he shuffled up to the yawning maw in the cliff-like wall, with the trepidation, only those who have spent any amount in a living hell will feel he peeked around the cave's mouth, and… it was empty. Stepping into full view he peered into the dark confines of the hole in the wall. The entrance was filled with teeth like protrusions of rock, while the inside was almost entirely smooth. Slithering around the sharp rocks at the cave’s entrance he took his first step into the cave and new home.
Five years later
He stood watching his prey. The demon hog was larger than its fellows with many spines and a shaggy grey coat, hefting his bone axe he stared out at the small herd. It had been around five years since he woke up here, and he had learned a lot in that amount of time.
He had been correct in the assumption that the imps had a camp it had turned out to be much worse than he had originally thought. The imps had turned out to be nothing more than foot shoulders, with what he had come to know as fiends making up the leadership, the home territory was a fortress-like structure, hell hounds, some of the meanest demon spawn he had ever had the displeasure to meet, and finally demon hogs. This had turned out to be the main food source of the under-world he had continued to hunt the demons for ages long enough to make his multi-purpose tool into a massive bone axe that was sharp and heavy enough to cut clean through stone he had gifted it the name of Uccisore, or slayer in some forgotten tongue, next was his hell hound cloak it was leather, blacker than night itself it had also gone through an evolution like his small knife he pulled up the descriptions of both items while he waited.

He smiled as he crept forward the imp headers should know better than to have come to the pit of bones, once he was close enough he jumped from hiding and slammed his axe blade into the headers killing the two imps without a sound, quickly he turned to the large hell hog taking its head it died without a sound, he quickly shoved the body into his inventory, as the other hogs squealed in panic he chopped up the imps to make it look like a rabid demon had attacked them. He retreated from the clearing letting out an imp cry for help, soon the hunter would become the hunted.
Ignis had been on guard duty that morning, he had dutifully walked the exterior wall, with only a small amount of complaining, why was he always on guard duty that should be left for the imps, not a higher demon such as himself, snorting with disgust he wished for a more interesting day then just walking the walls, until he heard the distress call. His head snapped in the direction it had come from noting quickly that it was the bone pits, he raised his caller's horn and blew for all he was worth then with a demonic screech he ran to where the call had originated from.
He smiled as he hid among the burnt hellwoods there was slight variation between the multitude of trees was only noticeable if one spent enough time among them which was something the boy had come to appreciate. He was crouched among a cluster of fallen branches from the trees, the mud under his feet was covered in a surprising amount of moss and mold the moss was something called blood moss if it was held to a wound it would soak up the blood like a sponge, grabbing several fist fulls he took out some leather and began to wrap the absorbing moss in it if he was wounded after his fight with the demon patrol then he could use this so he did not leave a blood trail,
“Not like that would change anything, not with all this mud everywhere,” he whispered to himself which brought a smile to his face, one of the advantages of living where no one dared to tread, even demons, was that you learned the usefulness of your surroundings. Snickering like a naughty schoolboy he prepared for battle, he again reached into his inventory and withdrew a leather buckler, a pair of rather thick boots, and finally his water bottle.

Taking a sip from the water bottle he felt the rejuvenating effects of the water, smiling he stepped into the boots while strapping on the buckler. As he did he heard the sound of stomping boots as they squelched through the mud, it was time to gather his remaining skills, the demons had arrived.
Ignis lead the other tribesmen through the forest until they came upon the scene of the dead headers. Looking around the scene he noticed that the imps had been hacked apart stopping the automatic conversion, cursing whatever the beast had this. Done he began to look around for tracks, but what he found was nothing… there was only one thing that left no trace in the demonic realms, the terror of the bone pit. He turned to warn his companions, only to see two of the seven still there
“IT'S THE TERROR OF THE BONEPITS,” he screamed to his two companions the three of them quickly formed into a triangular circle with their backs facing each other and waited for the beast to emerge.
He could hardly keep from laughing as he watched the friends look around wildly, using his persona as the terror of the bone pits was useful it made enemies fearful while having the effect of making them more prone to mistakes. Having gotten what he needed he quickly left the scene and returned to his home, as he walked the familiar path of bones and dark sands, he took the cores from his inventory

yes/no
Ha! He had even gotten the materials needed to up grade his axe, smiling in victory he slipped into the mouth of his cave, he had used many rocks and boulders to disguise his home as a rock slide. This had proven to be effective, as no demon had been able to find him. Smiling he reached the entrance and slipped inside. Walking to his meditation mat he took out his water bottle and dumped it into the grove he had dug out of the stone, this drove back the demonic mists that permeated the caverns, smiling he finally relaxed, his attention turned to the small reddish black marbles- inspecting them closely he saw the slight flickers of demonic mana.
He was fascinated by the concept of mana this incorporeal energy took on many different shapes and powers his attribute as he called it was dual affinities meaning he had two affinities primal, and holy. He had long come to the conclusion that having only ever killed demons he was given the holy attribute as a side effect, smiling he knew primal was a more… suitable attribute, at least for him.
Drawing himself from his thoughts he dumped his cores into the living water, with an explosive hiss the cores began to change color. He closed his eyes and looked at the upgrade option.

He sat meditating regaining the energy that had been taken for the improvement of his axe. As his axe finally started to finish its upgrading, he heard the familiar ding,
