Chapter 6- Survival of the Mig

Mig carries on the routine of driving his Speed Chariot, during the night until daybreak when he then takes a small break to eat some of his Nut Nutrient Bars while continuing to move on foot, for a few days until he reaches the end of the snowy forest that ensnares the Elven Facility he was kept in. Although Mig has made much progress in his escape he has also been eating just barely to get by and has slept even less in that time, nonetheless, Mig is determined to keep moving.

As the cycle drove through the dark forest Mig could feel that he was getting further away from the Elven Facility of Verdentrech, but just because Mig was soon exiting enemy territory that did not mean that he could be any lax in his travels. Danger still loomed ahead as well as potential dangers that could come. Mig would soon have to travel through the Veradigris Vale, or whatever was left of that area, a once warzone could be home to many threats, not to mention that the Elf Militants could launch a secondary search for Mig. Only when Mig was safe within Human territories or with the Human Forces, there was no telling what he could experience.

On the night of Mig’s fifth espace day as he eats what seems like his last Nut Nutrient Bar, the rest of the rations that are stored in the Speed Chairot are Elf food and unable to be consumed by Humans, but on the upside Mig has finally left the snowy forest and will begin to drive through the Veradigris Vale. Mig sat next to his cycle, taking a small break, as he munched on his Nut Nutrient Bar and kept himself as warm as he could with minimal resources.

“I’m on the last of my eatable food, I have to find more and ditch the food I can’t eat at some point, but for now I have to keep walking. In this cold, I’ll be shocked if I don’t have or get some kind of Frostbit after all this. On the upside, I’m almost out of this forest so I’ll be able to find a way back and find some food. The trouble would be traveling until I can find a way to contact the Human Forces, then I have to figure out what I should tell them about my escape. I can’t say an Elf Commander helped me escape to try and find the real cause of this war so that we could end it. They won’t believe me if I tell them that, I’ll have to bend the truth. I escape on my own through my means, but I’ll lay some grains about the cause of this war, and see if I can find anything from my superiors. What do you say? Good plan”, said Mig looking at a tuskdeer that was standing across from him.

The tuskdeer turns as it moves and shakes its head to seem like it is agreeing with Mig, only to bend its head downwards to find some plants to eat. The tuskdeer eats some of the plants from the ground as Mig finishes his Nut Nutrient Bar, he pockets the wrapper into his cycle. While doing so he looks at the Elven rations that he can’t eat, he looks at the tuskdeer and takes one of the Elven rations.

“Here, bud you can eat this, I think, have some. I can’t eat the stuff and it’ll be better than that nearly frozen plant”, said Mig holding the Elven ration out for the tuskdeer.

The tuskdeer lifts its head from the ground and moves over to Mig’s hand, it gets close enough that Mig can feel its tusks touch his hand. At first, it sniffs the food not finding it that much appealing.

“Well, what do you expect they’re military rations, they’re not supposed to taste good, they’re supposed to give you enough nutrients to keep going. Now just try it, can’t do you that much harm”

The tuskdeer moves its head closer to the food again and this time it takes a bit of it. The tuskdeer is enjoying the food that it is eating, Mig tries to set the Elven ration down on the ground, but the tuskdeer eating the food won’t let him.

“Clam down there bud, you’re acting like this the the first food you’ve eaten in a while”

After Mig said that he noticed that at the tips of the tuskdeer’s tusk, there was what appeared to be dried blood. Mig looking at them realized that this tuskdeer was the same one that saved him from that Elf Militant Spec-ops. Mig pats the head of the tuskdeer.

Unlawfully taken from Royal Road, this story should be reported if seen on Amazon.

“You’re that same one, aren’t you? And here I thought I just ran into a different tuskdeer. Have you been following me? If that’s the case then no wonder you’re chowing down like there's no tomorrow, you’ve been keeping up with my movements”

As Mig stops patting the tuskdeer he sees that it has finished eating all of the rations.

“It seems you liked it. Well, I thought so it was made of Elven vegetation, that only Elves and some animals can eat. Humans can’t touch the stuff, you can have the other one if you like. I lucked out and both the Elven rations were vegetable ones. I’ll leave it for you once I get out of this forest it should be about one more day's worth of traveling, but for now I think a little rest won’t do you nor me any harm. What do you say?”

The tuskdeer lies down on the ground as Mig rests reclining on his cycle, although he is supposed to be resting out of habit Mig finds himself irregularly waking up in increments.

“Up again. I guess habits are hard to kill. I would have thought that being kept prisoner for a few days would affect my vigilance. That tuskdeer seems attached to me, I wonder why, this kind of reminds me of something I remember from Training back in the day”

Mig falls back into his sleep as he dreams back to his days in Training, he’s sitting in a lecture hall as 3rd Staff Officer Iason Kasun teaches about Elf history and culture.

“Alright, now I understand stand many of you, fresher, are quite new to the concept of knowledge. Many of you want to fight the Elves head-on, but That’s Wrong. To fight an enemy one has to learn about them, so you all will undergo basic learning of Elves before moving to combat drills. Over the thousand years of history on this planet, we have come to learn much about the Elves. For today, one is that Elves, unlike us Humans, are spiritual they believe in multiple forms of the divine, although one major one is that of the Nature Spirits. It is believed by Elven culture that the Nature Spirits protect nature and give good fortune to those who uphold the value of the land”

“Then why did those Elves attack Human lands? There were homes and families there”, yelled out one of the Cadets.

“Quite! Who knows why the Elves decided to attack, across the Veradigris Vale, sometimes the smallest spark can ignite a cold war. Moving on back to the Nature Spirits, it is believed that they can take forms of animals and such to help guide those that they view as upholden to the values of nature”

A young Mig, not yet known by his nickname, sat listening and taking notes about the Elves. The more he learned about the Elves the better he could be at fighting them and that paid off as Mig came out top of the class in both the knowledge and combat parts of Training, which helped him quickly rise the ranks of the Human Forces. Soon the dream fades as Mig awakens back to the snowy forest resting on his Speed Chariot with the tuskdeer across from him. Mig soon stands up which wakes the tuskdeer that follows suit.

“I guess we should keep moving”

Mig hops onto his cycle and starts to drive off through the forest, but this time going slightly slower than the days before to let the tuskdeer keep a good pace with Mig. As the two of them continue on Mig talks with the tuskdeer.

“So, bud I know you’re following me and all, for now, but you do know you can’t keep following me right? Once I get out of this forest that is where our paths end. I’ll go my way through the Veradigris Vale and you can go back to the forest and do whatever it is you do there. I’ll leave the rest of the rations for you so you don’t have to worry about that. Got it?”

The tuskdeer turns its head and keeps walking forward, matching paces with Mig on his cycle. The both of them travel until they arrive at a cliff’s edge, Mig hops off his cycle to take a look at what’s ahead of him. He sees the ruins of a town caught in the war, that has been overtaken by the land, broken houses growing vegetation, fallen military vehicles covered in overgrowth, and once burnt fields full of crops.

“There it is. The first of many I’ll have to pass through. There’s a steep on the right, it’ll take us down. Let’s go”

Mig and the tuskdeer wander down the steep of the cliff as they are only a small walk away from the end of the forest. They walk on and once at the edge of the forest, Mig comes to a stop, as he stares off at the town ahead of him. He is in an almost frozen state until the tuskdeer taps Mig’s hand with its head, which causes Mig to snap out of it and pets the tuskdeer.

“I guess you want the rest of the food, huh? I’ll get it for you, but you can’t follow me, ok?”

Mig reaches and takes the last Elven ration out of the cycle, he places it on the ground for the tuskdeer to eat. As it eats the food Mig hops back on his cycle and gives one last look to the tuskdeer. Mig drives off toward the town as he says farewell to the tuskdeer, it then looks up from the food and stares at Mig driving off.
