Author’s Note

One of the most important factors to take into account when reading Tsuki is that the languages “Proper” and “Mainlander” are not Japanese. They are indeed influenced by Japanese, in the same way that English has been significantly influenced by Latin. The characters are not meant to be speaking perfect Japanese or living in a world where everything is like our real-world Japan.

Proper has taken Latin’s place in my worldbuilding. It is the more ancient language, which much of the nobility and scientific minds are enamoured with. There are no true Japanese speakers in this world, but Proper is the closest thing to it. There are numerous nations that do not speak Mainlander and have no Proper influence.

Mainlander, where it exists, has mutated over time. First names have changed over time. Surnames tend to be more old fashioned and based on Proper because they are inherited. Again, these are not meant to be Japanese names. There are multiple dialects and accented versions of Mainlander across the lands that are more often than not understandable by other groups. These variations exist alongside and borrow from the national language.
