Chapter 21: Sometime Around Midnight

1

Perhaps this newfound awareness would set me straight, thinking about things more deeply, not taking everything at face value… no… I was already doing that. I respect Jupiter, and Europa by extension, so I am more willing to accept what they say, but everyone else I was suspicious of, at least I didn’t feel like I could trust just anyone. I have never been attacked by a human though, demons are so far removed from even being animals that it just couldn’t be compared, so it felt a little weird to put humans… potentially… in the same category. But there was no doubt about it, the person hunting me used to be human, a fairy tale creature that shouldn’t exist, let alone for this long, like a flame, the brighter one burns diminishes how long it can stick around for, but from the age and time of death of the souls inside of me… there’s just no way it should have been able to survive this long…

Then… a sort of tugging sensation, like a cord was wrapped around my finger and being weakly pulled. I could only think of one thing that would cause something like this, the link between the magic and me that let us communicate, usually in dreams, and rarely when I was awake. It occurred to me that maybe dreaming had something to do with magic, after all there was nothing else like it, and it certainly felt like a magical experience sometimes, good or bad.

However, there were two reasons I knew that it wasn’t magic, the first being the immutable rule of using magic. When you used magic, it was like flexing a muscle, and producing an effect, like when you think about a muscle and make it pull, your arm lifts, where the pull of the muscle is the signal, and the arm lifting is the effect. For example, when I make my sword, Crownsplitter, I have to create it between my hands, meaning it is similar to working out your hands and arms, only much more extreme. For the average person, tapping into magic that powerful might cause permanent damage, but for people who are used to to magic, or have a strong body from training.

Consequently, when you train for extended periods of time, you might end up exhausted, using strong magic, or lots of magic over a long period of time, produces the same effect. Normally after I summon my sword, my arms are sore the next day, not even including the injuries I might sustain on them. However, there are some effects that magic can produce that do not require a limb, or are too specific to be generated from one, in those cases a muscle is still used as the conduit, it is located in the lower right of your torso, apparently this is the same for everyone, as such it is known as the ‘Magic Organ’. So while other muscles can be used as a conduit for magic, it seems to be common replacement, but in both cases the magic takes great effort and physical exertion to be used, which dreaming does not.

The second reason was a lot more simple, there were some souls inside me that insisted they were from a world without magic, and they still dreamed. At first it was hard to believe that there was no magic there from the few things I heard, but every one of them insisted that they had nothing like magic. So instead of having to do with magic, it had to do with being human, yet apparently animals could dream too, it started to make less and less sense,
