Chapter 1 - A Fractured Reality

Chapter 1 - A Fractured Reality

No one expects the world to end. Well, a few people do, but not everyone. Some of those people are crazy and bunker themselves, while others think that the end of the world is far, far off in the future. Some believe it will end like in the bible, or by a zombie apocalypse, but I believe most think we will destroy our own world before anything else does.

----------------------------------------

I had just sat on the table, my plate full of food and a glass of cold water next to it. I was ready to eat when the absurd happened. Reality rippled, vibrated, and shook. They may seem the same thing, but they aren’t. As the seconds passed and I simply stared at the wall in front of me, trying to understand what I had felt, a new sensation started to creep into my senses the air felt charged.

Then another sensation appeared. Everything felt more vivid, more intense. I couldn’t help but compare this feeling to that movie, limitless, when the MC eats the pill, and his world gains a more vivid coloration. While I experienced these new sensations, the light colors outside began to change, becoming colorful, more than any rainbow I have ever seen.

When I noticed it, I stood up and went outside and I looked up and saw what I could only describe as a wide crack on the walls of reality. A wide “W” ripped out of reality, and in its place, a chaotic mess of colors, essences and concepts existed. A truly chaotic realm between realities.

Despite looking up, I didn’t feel the sun hurting my eyes one bit, overwhelmed as it was by this colorful show. No, it was hurting something else. My mind screamed at me to stop looking, my soul being “torn” apart by this spectacular sight. I was enthralled, so much so that I didn’t notice myself losing consciousness. The next thing I knew was the sensation of comfort, peace, and warmth.

I felt as if I was drifting through an endless void, but it was far from the cold, lifeless expanse of space. Instead, I found myself surrounded by a warm, glowing haze—a strange mixture of deep reddish orange, like the soft, indistinct colors one sees when closing their eyes against a bright light. It was as if the entire space was infused with a gentle, pulsating energy, wrapping around me like a comforting, protective embrace, shielded from all directions, like a warm, motherly cocoon. As strange as it seems, I felt like I was back in my mother’s womb, without a care in the world.

I dreamt of not much. I simply felt the moment of peace, much like when I slept under a heavy and comfortable blanket in winter with my window open, minus the cold of course. Like in any lucid dream, I was aware of it, but I could do nothing to change it.

Time was also meaningless here. I was content in remaining like that for eternity; however, something begged me to move on, to wake up. I simply ignored it until a hand jolted me awake from my peaceful slumber. It was me, or rather my subconsciousness, yet it wasn’t wearing my face. It was a shadow of my form.

The narrative has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the infringement.

“You always wanted to have powers and live in a world different from the one we were reborn into. Are you going to let this chance to slip by, like you did that one time with her!?”

It asked, and somehow its words finally made sense to me. Wait, reborn!?

“Do not focus on that now! We are not ready for that! Focus on here. Focus on that!”

My subconsciousness said and pointed away, towards something. Looking away from my subconsciousness to where it pointed, I saw a brilliant white sun. It floated around ten or so meters above the floor. As soon as I looked at the white sun, our surroundings changed, from reddish orange to pure white. Completely forgetting his previous words.

“That is our soul. And like every soul, it is blank. The only way to change it is through power and history. You will understand in time. Now, I know as much as you do. What you desire. What you hate.”

My inner self continued speaking, as he waved one arm. All around the white sun, appeared hollowed-out planets. Some big and some small. After a moment, I realized that half of them were smaller and the other half more than twice the size of their smaller companions. Each hollowed planet had its own hollowed moon.

“That is how you will start building your path. Your power! Our power! Because I am you!”

I watched as he waved his arms, and wisps of energy gathered from everywhere, consolidating inside the hollowed planets. The energy itself was polychromatic like the crack in the sky.

“I will do this only this time, but the next time and later on, you must do it yourself. Sure, I can give you a hand, but you are not a baby, and even if you were, so would I be.”

“But you clearly know of things I don’t.” I said for the first time in this unilateral conversation, thinking back to when he mentioned us being ‘reborn’.

“I do, just like how I know every other bloodline memory you have. Humans are not so different from other creatures. All of us are animals. Living beings. Just like how a foal knows how to walk and breathe, so do you. The difference is necessity.”

I listened and if he was me, or my inner self, then he would love to make me think for the answer he gave. So, I contemplated his answer. Sure, animals need to learn how to walk and run faster than humans do. Several animals instinctively know how to perform some things.

For example, spiders. They know how to spin their webs, yet that wasn’t taught. The act of weaving their silky threads is intrinsic. Because that is how they live and sustain themselves. Following that logic of necessity, then I don’t have any necessary need to know more than I already do.

“I will stop you on that track. You will learn that in due time, if we reach that point anyways. But I believe I will. Which means I believe in you. Anyways, I am almost done here. Look!”

He spoke, derailing my thoughts. Sighing, I paid attention to him, or rather she, as she spoke the last word with glee. Somehow my inner self switched genders during her speech. Somehow it didn’t surprise me. I always felt a bit uncomfortable with my body.

“This is basic knowledge; every creature has their own special power, named Thaumaturgy. This is yours. Well, ours now, simply because there are a rare few of us who can make our own Thaumaturgy. I have spoken too much now. It is time for you to wake up and face this new reality we live in now.”

With those words, I felt my consciousness waning, and myself awakening.
