002 Special Events, Contests & Shinies

“Hey, Narrator.”

Yeah? What’s up, Author?

“Well, I was wondering what your opinion was on the special RRL events we’ve had.”

Events? What are those?

“Events, the things RRL hosts during holidays and stuff? The one where there’s usually a few contests and shiny achievements to be had? So, what’s your opinion of them?”

Oh, those things. You know, that’s actually a good topic to bring up. I know I may be a little late in mentioning it, but the Valentine’s event we had was kinda fun. I mean, you even managed to mock the general social view of Valentine’s day with a short poem of yours. There were chocolates, a breakup poem, and even a confession poem! Could I call you the love doctor from now on?

“No. Do not associate me with love, relationships, or love advice at all. Ever.”

Hmm… I guess that’s true. Your social life isn’t exactly something to be envied.

“Could we please get off the topic of my personal life and back to the subject at hand?”

You’re the producer and I’m the public face. What did you expect to happen? I’m just saying what you want me to say.

“So you’re saying that I intentionally want you to mock me and demean me through written text?”

Pretty much.

“*Smack*”

What? Hey! Why’re you face palming yourself. Now’s not the time for that! We still have to talk about the Special Events that RRL has!

“Oh, nothing. I’ll just be here, sitting in the corner, sulking a little and thinking about life. Don’t mind me and by all means, give the audience what they’re here for.”

Okay? I’ll check on him later after this bit is done so don’t worry, readers. Author tends to get like this sometimes, something about life the redundancy of it.

Anyways, today’s topic is Special Events as mentioned above. If you’re newer to the RRL community or haven’t participated before in any of these events, you may have a few questions. Please allow me to answer them.

First of all, what are these Special Events?

Special Events are typically an excuse to have games, contests, and for the RRL staff to give out shiny achievements out like candy to those who participate. The archive of past events can be found here under the contests forum branch. Examples include RRL’s birthday, Christmas, and Valentines. These are all staff generated events.

Did you also know that you could also start an event? One example is the NaNoWriMo Event (National Novel Writer’s Month) held in November alongside the Birthday Event. The event was prompted by Zenlith with assistance from the RRL staff and grew to include over a dozen participants, one of which was Author… He totally failed to write by the way. It’s a miracle that he’s even writing this right now, considering how bad he is at continuing something.

“WHAA! Stop pointing out my failures and get back to the topic, you heartless creation!” Author wails from the corner, only to subside to suppressed sobbing.

*Cough-cough* Okay, sorry about that. I guess it’s still a bit of a sore subject… It’s not like everything you start is left incomplete. I mean, just look at your work in your Terrible Topic Corner!

Unauthorized tale usage: if you spot this story on Amazon, report the violation.

“Still not helping. *depressed sniffles*”

...

Ahem, all you really need to start an event is to have a valid prompt and bring it up with a part of the RRL staff. Contact through PMs or generating a suggestions thread is recommended. If it’s interesting enough, they might bite and make it an official event along with a site wide announcement.

Speaking of RRL Events, maybe we could have a St. Patrick’s Day event. There’ll be rainbows, gold, and little squat guys in green whose stature just makes you want to drop kick them over the horizon. If not that, maybe Easter? It’ll be the advent of the great Penguinny! A cross between a penguin and bunny who hides cookies for good little boys and girls to find, and, and...

Now that I think about it, there’s not really any big holiday between Easter and Halloween… Maybe we should make something. How about Penguin Day, or RRL- Summer Edition, or-

“I’m back.”

Oh, hey Author. I thought this would become a one-narrator show for a bit. Nice to see you’ve composed yourself somewhat. Good thing the audience can’t see your bloodshot eyes and haggard appearance… And, I just killed it didn’t I.

“Yes, you did. Instead of droning on about how terrible I look, why don’t you tell our audience what can be gained from these events?”

Good idea.

Participation in these events usually gets you something shiny. Said shinies are called achievements. You see those little shines under Author’s profile icon? He’s trying to fill that up with more shinies. That’s not the only way to get them though. You can also get them for doing other things such as helping the RRL community, getting recognized by the RRL staff, or for something random. Most of the achievements along with how to get them is listed here.

Even if you don’t participate though, authors tend to get inspired and write more so the more the word gets spread, the more we all get to read! It’s a win-win situation. More events means more fun, which means more shinies, which means more participants, which means more authors writing stuff for us to leech off of!

“Whoah there Narrator. Calm down a little. Breath in, and out. Chill.”

You do remember that I don’t actually have a body with which to breath, right?

“Yeah? So?”

… Nevermind. I’m calm now.

“Well, I think that’s a wrap for this update of Trending News (According to Narrator). See you next time!”

See you next time, readers!

And don’t forget, additional questions pertaining to this or future topics may be posed either in the comments or through Author’s suggestions doc.
