Traveling Merchant in the Apocalypse
Chapter 4 - The fall of humanity?

Chapter 4 - The fall of humanity?

The next mission wasn't that difficult.

Tutorial Mission 7: The best traveling merchant shouldn’t have an empty storage, so why is yours not full yet? Get each space of your storage and seed storage filled - Storage needs to be at least filled 5% of its capacity and seed storage needs at least 99 seeds. Prize: Expand storage and seed storage. Type: Mandatory. Done: 8/14.

Being an optimist, I could forget the expenses and consider this quest was just in time, after all, yesterday I cooked all the ingredients I had at home.

So, one space in my storage is occupied with the dishes I made and everything else was piled inside another.

In my defense, even if the other was a mess… It was a kind of organized mess and I was even able to put things away without destroying anything inside, ok?! Well, at least I like to think it’s my credit and not some function of the storage… I still should organize it at some point, though… After all, there will be more things later and I won’t like looking at each list every time I want to find something…

Checking the storage contents, I saw the antidote I got as a prize and tried picking it out. It was a tube of metal, the size of my palm weighing 100g or so, With a button on one end and the tip of one needle on the other. It seemed expensive and advanced, but there was no sign for what I should use it, so I put it back inside.

Anyway, for now I will let both spaces like that, so all I have to do is fill two spaces for seeds and four for 'products'.

But it's already late and I have an important practical class tomorrow. I will wrap up here and just review some basic content in pathology and semiology. I didn’t forget to harvest when it was time.

“After analyzing the clinical history and physical exam results of this patient and determining the active problems, we formulated diagnostic hypotheses, explaining in a narrative way how you arrived there”, the professor explained, while pointing to the description on the slide, and continued, “now, it is necessary to group the problems into hypotheses to be tested, specifying the exams to be carried out...”

I continued to attend the lecture on problem-based clinical reasoning, taking notes and then answering the cases that the professor presented for the class to practice. This lecture is a review so that we can start accompanying preceptors today.

“Haaa…”, I sighed, “That was tiring…”

I had to stay from ten until now attending patients… I had to eat lunch in thirty minutes or so. Besides, it was nerve wracking, ‘cause I never knew when the preceptor was going to ask something. At least I was able to answer everything…

I drove home and took a bath.

Looking at the time, it’s almost four p.m. I can still make it to the wholesale market today and buy the things I planned the day before and more groceries to do some other nice dishes later. After driving there, I bought yogurts, cookies, stuffed breads, tarts, my favorite chips and snacks, many groceries, besides many kinds of peppers, beans, broccoli, beets and every other seed they had to sell. I will put just bean and pepper seeds first, when this thing asks for more seeds I will put it in the seeds storage, so I won’t need to continue running around.

In addition to food, I got a bunch of organizing boxes, big and small, to organize things.

It was already evening, so I brought everything home, organized everything and filled the storages with around 50% of their capacity. Maybe I was too excited while shopping, but I wasn’t even distressed about buying it, since I paid less per each and I will be able to use them all with time.

Today’s daily task was to get new products and weekly was to walk seven kilometers, so I finished without a problem.

Back home, I took care of the fields and, as in the morning I planted corn again.

'I forgot to do it in the afternoon...'

I was a bit distressed because I missed 15 points with that. Getting back in the kitchen, I cooked some dishes until I couldn’t hold my tiredness.

I need sleep... I dined, took a bath and lay down, yawning.

In the morning, I woke up to a brightly lit room, it's six a.m., but the screen seems to be almost glaring at me, accusing me for not continuing the tutorial. There was no alarm sound, so it isn’t time to harvest yet. I rubbed my eyes trying to wake up and read what it said, only to see a warning in red letters.

Warning!!!

There is less than one day left before the fall of humanity. If the chosen merchant doesn't finish the tutorial before it, they will lose eligibility and system access.

That pop-up kept flashing, as if to show its urgency.

I frowned, feeling ominous.

"The fall of humanity? What do you mean?"

Insufficient right of access.

"Of course I don't have… You never tell me important things…"

I checked my storage, there were four new spaces in each storage, but I wasn't happy. This warning makes me feel like something bad will happen soon.

'Should I try to keep this system or not?'

I wasn't sure now that it showed me a way to be unattached to it.

‘Didn’t I say from the beginning I didn’t want it? Why do I feel unsure now?’

It was as if the flashing warning pulled the strings of my heart, I couldn’t calmly let it go. There were so many ‘what if…’ disturbing my thoughts, that I felt suffocated. Hundreds of scenarios crossed my mind, while I wanted to deny it, the expression ‘the fall of humanity’ makes me think of the apocalypse…

“That’s absurd, right?”

This book's true home is on another platform. Check it out there for the real experience.

I bit my lips, my mind running wild.

“System, I’m asking you.”

No answer. The ominous feeling was screaming inside my mind.

Could it really be like that? How?

I didn’t know, I didn’t want to believe such a wild thought, so I laughed it out.

“Nah, I’m being paranoid…"

I got up and walked towards the bathroom, stopping.

‘I should at least check it out… After tasting the sweetness this system provided me, I am sure it will be of great help… even in the worst case scenario.’

I couldn’t help but still think of dire situations. So I read the tutorial mission:

Tutorial Mission 8: Ding! Ding! Turn on your machine! Make something in the machine you bought. Prize: +3 fields. Type: Mandatory. Done: 0/1.

“Oh, right, the bakery, I totally forgot! Let’s inaugurate it now… But how should I use it…”

I opened my farm and tried to access the new bakery. I can see it there with my mind, it worked as if I was clicking in a game. There were three spaces on each side there. One side was gray, the other seemed to be where I could put something. I quickly got one kilogram of flour from my storage and put it inside, with a mentality of testing.

“Lucky…”

It did work, there appeared 5x bread and a timing, fifty minutes to be exact. But how can you make bread with only flour? It won’t be flatbread, right? The picture doesn’t look like it though…

“Don’t try to understand, the more you try to understand, the less you will…”

I concluded, so I could move on.

While waiting, I made breakfast, ate, took a bath and got ready to go out. I opened it before time was up and saw four were done, so it was like I put five batches to bake, each one ten minutes. The last one finished and I promptly collected the bread.

It was twenty-five pieces of bread a little bigger than my open hand. I looked at my points, I only got five points. Even so, it will give me more points in the same time the fields would take. So I continued, this time I directly put ten kilograms on it, and it began doing 50x bread. I nodded with satisfaction, setting the alarm on my phone and resetted the harvest alarm, since in two minutes it will be finished.

I harvested the three fields and sowed cucumbers on the six fields (yes, the three new ones too), since it only takes six hours, I will be planting them for now.

I want to unlock as many things as I can before the said fall. If everything goes well I can unlock the mill in the afternoon, that said, I really should get some wheat seeds…

‘Maybe even oat, barley and flaxseed…But where?’

If I can’t find them, I can only try planting the processed seeds later.

“System, how many hours do I have left?”

Even as I waited, for a few minutes, the system didn't tell me.

“Why can’t you at least tell me it… It’s not much…”

No answer.

“Sigh… Okay… Show me the next mission and tasks.”

Tutorial Mission 9: Wow, you have protection, but what about attack? Sometimes, attack is the only defense, so as a merchant, choose your weapon! Equip one weapon and a book about its practice. Prize: Weaponry expertise and unlock new products. Type: Mandatory. Done: 0/4.

Weekly task: Day 5/7 - A merchant needs a healthy body to travel - walk 7 kilometers. Prize: 30 points. Type: Mandatory. Done: 0,01/8. Time left: 16h 45 min 15 s

Daily task: Get a new product for your store! Prize: 10 points. Type: Mandatory. Done: 0/1. Time left: 16h 45 min 15 s

Yesterday I wouldn't feel any pressure to finish it sooner, but now, any time not working on the tutorial feels like forever… I have a sense of crisis I never felt before. Maybe it's just anxiety because of what the system said or maybe it's my sixth sense screaming at me to be fast, but I can't ignore it.

'Skipping classes today, then. If nothing happens tomorrow, I can go back to normal life. Let's finish this tutorial soon.'

This mission reminded me of the armory and how there are spaces not filled. I decided to find more protection 'items', together with the weapons the mission asked for, since it's another mission the system could ask for.

I drove out and at a sports store I bought knee pads, elbow pads, shin pads and chest protection. Then looking at the archery section, I fell in love with a compound bow, but I got discouraged looking at the price. Then I found a bow that I liked with a hundred arrows and a quiver, a crossbow, a hundred bolts, a baseball bat, tactical knife and a switchblade.

I got weird looks before going out, maybe if the apocalypse doesn't come, I will receive a visit from the police for clarification tomorrow. Well, I would gladly answer any questioning.

Still feeling like I’m not prepared enough, I thought about searching for bulletproof suits but I don't have enough time to wait for the product to arrive.

Then, I looked around two bookstores before finding a book I felt satisfied with, containing both bow and crossbow practice. After all, I need a good one since it will probably be the same as before, the system putting its contents inside my head.

Back in the car, I held the bow, arrows and book, concluding the mission. This time, I wasn't startled when the knowledge invaded my brain. On the contrary, I feel more secure knowing how to use those, since all imply that I will need it soon.

I took some medicine for the headache I felt and drove to another sports store and bought more arrows and bolts, totaling three hundred of each, and put everything inside the storage.

‘I will get poor like this… All my hard earned savings…’

Even so, I still braced myself to continue.

'It's already past midday, at six the system said I had less than a day, how much time is left...'

Looking at the next mission, I wasn’t surprised.

Tutorial Mission 10: It's time for your farm to open a new way of business, get a few small animals for it. Prize: Unlock Animal Husbandry. Type: Mandatory. Done: 0/10.

'I knew it… Since there is a feed mill, there should be a way to have animals on this system…'

I drove to a farm and bought twelve chickens, they’re easier to take without questioning, after all. I drove out, stopped a few minutes away and held ten chickens in my arms and concluded the mission.

'Next...'

Tutorial Mission 11: Collect your first animal products. Prize: Unlock space for another kind of animal. Type: Mandatory. Done: 0/10.

I opened the farm, it now had a hen house beside the mill, selecting it with my mind. There were ten chickens with three timings beside them, one saying there is eighteen minutes left for maturation, another for eggs, 2h 18 min left, and other for chicken meat, 11h 18 min left. I’m happy to be able to have both, but for the mission I will need to wait two hours and eighteen minutes before finishing.

I tried putting the other chickens inside, but it didn’t work, the system says there is no space.

'Should I use the new space for chickens too? … it’s out of question, since I can have another animal, I need to get another... Maybe with pigs I could get bacon, but if I could buy a cow, I should be able to have milk and meat, right?'

I drove back to the farm. I'm going to put animals inside my car when the mission is almost done, so I can transfer the calves inside the farm soon.

While waiting, I left the chickens in the car, with one window slightly opened. Walking around, I relaxed a bit, seeing the peaceful life in the camp, their plantations and animals, where I chose a couple of calves and two pairs of piglets, none too big, otherwise I won’t be able to take them…

‘I can’t believe something big will happen on such a normal and beautiful day, there is no sign of it… Maybe the fall of humanity doesn't mean something bad…’

I really wanted to believe that.

While walking I found potatoes, rice, wheat and oat seeds in another farm, buying them. Besides, seeing some ducks, rabbits, sheep and goats, I was itching to take some too, but I know I have nowhere to leave them.

‘Maybe later… if…’

I can only feel satisfied with what I have in my hands.

Seeing the time running low, I walked back with everything to where I choose the calves and piglets, paid and said:

"I will take them in my car, it's nearby..."

The woman looked at me weirdly, but didn't comment.

"Dear, can you move the animals for her?" She said to her husband, who soon agreed.

Putting one calve in the back of my car, one in the back seat, since I insisted and the piglets in the front, repeating distressed:

"They will make a mess, try to not let them go out of the boxes... The calf there is nothing we can do but... Sigh..."

"Alright, alright, it's okay... Don't worry, I will be there soon, thank you..."

The woman sighed and turned around when I got inside the car. I could see she really worried about the animals. I smiled to calm her and drove out. Some distance away, I stopped the car, collected eggs in the hen house and concluded the mission. Before I could think about it, the new mission appeared with letters shining in red.
