Chapter 1: Into the Wild

Chapter 1: Into the Wild

Max Sterling tugged at the straps of his backpack, making sure it was secure. The sun hung low in the sky, casting golden light across the trailhead of the Great Northern Mountains. His husky, Luna, paced excitedly at his feet, her bright blue eyes scanning the path ahead.

“Ready, girl?” Max asked with a grin. Luna barked in response, her tail wagging. She had always been ready for adventure.

The two had planned this trip for months. After years of hiking smaller trails and exploring national parks, they were finally taking on the grandest challenge of them all: a long trek through untamed wilderness, over towering peaks and through dense forests, in hopes to reach the top of the Great Northern Mountains.

The first few hours passed uneventfully. Max and Luna found their rhythm easily, hiking side by side as they ascended the mountain path. Birds sang from the treetops, and the occasional rustle in the underbrush hinted at wildlife observing them from afar.

“Think we’ll see any bears this time?” Max mused aloud. Luna tilted her head, giving him a look that seemed to say, “We’ll handle it, whatever comes.” Her presence always gave Max comfort, no matter how daunting the wilderness ahead.

As they rounded a bend in the trail, the view opened up, revealing the vast expanse of the mountains stretched out before them. The peaks were capped with snow, and the valleys below were cloaked in mist, mysterious and alluring.

Max snapped a quick selfie with Luna, capturing the breathtaking scenery behind them. “Just the beginning, girl,” he whispered. “This is going to be an adventure we’ll never forget.”

But as the sun began to set and shadows lengthened, the trail took a darker turn. A distant howl echoed through the trees, and Max felt Luna stiffen beside him. They weren’t alone.
