First Encounter

First Encounter

The waves pound against the shoreline as I open my eyes. The sky above is clear blue and filled with fluffy white clouds. It's morning, and it looks like the weather will be pleasant today.

"Woohoo!" I shouted, running along the pavement.

It's a clear day, and the sun is shining warmly in the sky.

I jog west to the high school track, and run a few laps around it.

It's been an excellent workout; I'm feeling fit and healthy as I head back home.

As I walk down the street, I notice an island a short distance away from the beach. It wasn't there until yesterday.

I walk up to the beach.

The sand is damp and warm, but the sea breeze keeps it cool.

The sun is setting up from the east; its light glints off the water as waves lap against the shoreline, gently lapping at my toes.

"Hey, can you come here, help me?"

My curiosity gets the better of me, so I take some steps on the water towards the island.

A girl in her teens stands on the edge of a huge rock, waving her arms frantically.

A breeze blows through, some sand enters my eyes, I rub my eyes.

I'm standing on the beach, but the island that was in front of me a few moments ago is no longer there. This is as if it never existed.

A case of literary theft: this tale is not rightfully on Amazon; if you see it, report the violation.

"It doesn't feel like reality anymore or am I having a hallucination or am I still dreaming?"

I stare out into the darkening ocean. Waves crash in rhythm with my heartbeat, washing away any memory of the strange island that seemed to disappear out of nowhere.

It's late afternoon, and the sun is setting over the horizon.

I returned back home.

I'm back in my bedroom.

My father is using his laptop, and my mother is busy preparing dinner in the kitchen and my little sister is reading her book.

I sit down on the bed and turn on the television.

"What's this? A brand-new show?"

A man appears on the screen, describing a TV game called "Dungeon Lords".

"Dungeon Lords" is a live-action role-playing game (LARP) using modern technology like video cameras and laptops.

"Sounds fun," says dad, who is watching the same program.

"Dungeon Lords!" shouted someone in the crowd, followed by cheers and applause.

"That was really fun! Let's do another round!"

I turned off the TV and sat down to have dinner and then I retired to sleep.

In the morning, I woke up and got ready for my morning run.

As I opened the door, the girl who I saw yesterday on the island was floating upside down in front of me.

I tried to talk to her, but she did not respond.

She then said something in an unknown language to me which I didn't understand.

I blinked my eyes.

Then, suddenly, she vanished.

I was surprised by the turn of events.

I looked to the east where I thought the island appeared yesterday but it was not there.

All day I was looking at the spot where the island appeared yesterday but it didn't appear.

Upon returning home in the afternoon, I spotted a pair of girls' shoes on the front porch. As I entered the kitchen, I saw a young girl drinking juice and chatting with her mother.

Walking a few steps closer, I was shocked to see that it was the same girl who was asking for help on the vanished island. It was also the girl who was upside down when I opened the door this morning.

I asked "Mom who is she?"

"She was sitting outside the gate calling your name so I thought she might be someone you know."

I was in awe. "How could she know my name when I hadn't told her, and she is quite mysterious as she disappeared yesterday along the island, appeared upside down in the morning muttered some words and vanished and now she is in my home" I thought.

"Hello, what's your name?"

"My... na....nam... name..... is... Eli", she answered.
