Among the Tree Huggers

Among the Tree Huggers

As Kagan followed Vold deeper into the heart of the dark elf kingdom, he was struck by its beauty. The village, perched high within Yggdrasil's massive branches, was a breathtaking sight. Houses with sleek, curved architecture were nestled among the leaves, connected by elegant walkways that weaved through the tree’s enormous boughs. The entire settlement exuded a sense of harmony with nature, illuminated by softly glowing lanterns that hung from the branches.

Kagan couldn’t help but make light of the situation. “So, is there a treehouse Airbnb around here? Asking for a friend,” he quipped, eliciting a few raised eyebrows from the passing elves. It seemed his humor wasn’t quite hitting the mark with the locals.

Meanwhile, Lala was enjoying her own adventure, darting around curiously, investigating the nooks and crannies of the tree city, much to the amusement – and sometimes consternation – of the dark elves she encountered.

Vold led Kagan towards a grand structure that stood out even in the splendor of the village. Its walls were adorned with intricate carvings that told stories of the dark elves’ history and culture. This was their palace, a place of wisdom and leadership.

As they walked, Kagan broached the topic on his mind. “So, about this whole student-becomes-a-child thing...you could have given your people a head's up.”

Vold glanced at him, a faint smile on her lips as she began to braid his hair into a traditional elf style, a symbol of his new status. “Would you have chosen a different path if you knew?”

Kagan shrugged, watching his reflection in a polished surface. “Maybe not, but it’s a lot to take in. Plus, if my folks see this, they might send you a thank-you card. They must be over the moon about not having to deal with me.”

Vold’s hands moved deftly through his hair. “Your past does not define you here, Kagan. Among us, you are a son of the elves, a bearer of our hopes.”

Kagan’s induction into dark elf society was an experience rich with new customs and traditions. As part of integrating him into their culture, Vold had arranged for Kagan to be outfitted in traditional dark elf garb, reflecting his unique status in their community.

The attire was simple yet elegant, in line with the dark elves’ appreciation for minimalism and harmony with nature. Kagan was presented with a finely woven dress shirt and long, flowing pants, both in shades that complemented the forest’s natural palette. Reluctantly, he slipped into a pair of sturdy boots, insisting he wouldn't traverse the tree city barefoot. “I need my feet intact if I’m going to make any more climbs like today,” he joked, as he adjusted the boots, ensuring his mobility wasn’t hindered.

True to his style, Kagan kept his shirt casually unbuttoned at the top and rolled up the sleeves. His pants were neatly tucked into his boots, giving him a somewhat rugged, adventurous look.

His hair, traditionally braided in a style that denoted his status as Vold’s student and an honorary member of the dark elf lineage, added a touch of regality to his otherwise laid-back demeanor.

His hair, intricately braided in a style symbolic of his student status, was a striking contrast to his otherwise relaxed appearance. The braids, done by Vold herself, were a visible sign of his bond with her and his acceptance into the community.

On his back, Kagan carried the old sword that Vold had given him at the start of their training. He was awaiting the completion of his new blade, a process he knew would be significant and transformative. In the meantime, the old sword served as a reminder of his journey so far and the progress he had made.

As he walked through the village, Kagan’s presence generated curiosity and murmurs among the dark elves. His jovial approach to their customs, paired with a sincere respect for their traditions, slowly won over some of the more skeptical members of the community.

The simplicity of the dark elf lifestyle fascinated Kagan. Their homes were seamlessly integrated into the branches of Yggdrasil, built with care to preserve the integrity of the great tree. The community lived in harmony with their surroundings, their diet consisting of foraged and carefully cultivated foods.

The day's events culminated in a formal introduction at the central pavilion, where Vold presented Kagan to the village elders. Standing before the assembly, Kagan’s characteristic humor shone through. “I may not have grown up in the branches of a world tree,” he said with a smile, “but I promise to learn your ways, maybe teach you a thing or two about handling a sword… or a joke.”

The elders, initially reserved, were visibly amused by Kagan's lightheartedness. It was clear that Kagan's path amongst the dark elves would be untraditional, but they didn't mind. Their queen didn't make rash decisions.
