"He isn't that good", "Don't be close to this guy", and "Don't talk to that other guy". These words entail some essence of jealousy was what she usually hears from her Scorpio friend. Whenever someone was to ask what happened between them, Hathway would not mug or talk something bad about him. She would classify him as someone who is ambitious, secretive, and to some extent, ranging from obsessive to overly possessive.
Holding the position as a human resource manager, Hathway loves meeting and interacting with her new clients. Inevitably, her job requires her to be exposed to people from all walks of life. Whenever she attend any social events, he would remind Hathway to come back home early. To the extent, he will take the extra effort to fetch her from the office.
He used to limit Hathway's social circle, restricted her interactions among her peers, was wary of any of her male confidants, and treated them as her pursuers. It was all his illusions that Hathway belonged to him. All of her friendships forged require them to pass his form of verification. Hathway knew his kind intention was to protect her from those who were trying to take advantage of her. She was glad to have such a friend as her "goalkeeper" but was not expecting that she eventually became one of his possession.
Hathway was not looking to be part of any form of relationship. However, these were all the subtle signs of his insecurities that she had neglected long ago. Those cues drill down to keep Hathway by his side. At times, it can become suffocating but she did not voice her concerns. In the past, both of them were inseparable. Hathway resembled a kite, where she likes to venture to see the world, and he resembled the string, where he constantly trying to tie her by his side.
In the past, he will usually wait for Hathway to end her work, to rush on the day's assignments together before heading back home. From an initially around 10 minutes bus ride to the nearest train station, he flagged for the bus that took 25-minutes ride to spend more time with her. Not to deny, any outsider will perceive him as a sweetheart. Indeed, she will not deny that too. In his eyes, what was the underlying reason that made her so alluring? Her elegant appearance? Her radiant smile? Her unique personality?
During one of the formal gathering occasions, Hathway was gowned in a champagne gold cocktail dress which outshines her from the attire of her colleagues. There was a tall and charming man who approached Hathway and invited her for a dance. Perceived him as her admirer, he immediately put down the half-filled glass of red wine in his hand and pulled her away, creating a strange atmosphere in the air. Unknowingly, he had crossed that invisible boundary and cared too much for Hathway. She remarked, "Having to stay on par with him was an endless task".
Hathway reminisced herself on their shared memories. She felt that it was such a pity for them to end up in an endless state. The maintenance of their bonds was a daunting task, especially after Hathway decided to migrate to another foreign land to further her studies. On his part, he could not leave his current job to migrate with her. He was afraid that Hathway would find someone better and eventually leave him one day.
Living on the other side of the world, Hathway was relieved to keep a distance away from him. During these times, he sought ways to control her from afar and did not want to conform to what he said. Faced with the changing circumstances, she knew things have to change. Hathway then took a brave step and had the courage to end the indefinite rounds of mind games that deprive her of rest. Time will heal, and eventually, she changed for the better.
If she was given a chance to rewind to the past, and before she retreats away from his world entirely, she probably would pose him this question, "So what we are?".
