Chapter 4: CLOSE ENCOUNTER pt.2

Chapter 4: CLOSE ENCOUNTER pt.2

Lothar was trying his best not to laugh after seeing Caspar's childlike expression, but he clears his throat as he returns to his usual demeanor.

"Sergeant Hahn, would you please describe the finer details of the enemy position."

Caspar finally straightens his stance and turns serious,

"Yes, your highness."

He then looks at the map sprawled on the table, pointing at the southern tip of the enemy trench line, where the battle is supposed to commence.

"Due to the existence of this defensive hill and forest, the end of the trench does not house a large number of troops and equipment."

Lothar and the present officers nod. Caspar pulls his hand from the map and crosses his arm in front of his chest as he continues.

"But that would not be the best place to attack from."

The officers frown at the unexpected statement. Lothar raises his brows as he asks. "Ohh..., and why do you say that?"

All eyes in that room now rest on Caspar, but he acts as if none of that exists explained.

"I've spent a lot of time in the edges of the forest."

Caspar smiles to build up anticipation then continues.

"And I have noticed that that part of the trench does not receive supplies."

This story originates from Royal Road. Ensure the author gets the support they deserve by reading it there.

One of the officers then suddenly proclaims.

"How stupid, do you expect us to believe that those men are fighting without food or ammunition?"

Caspar turns to the officer with a smile as he continues.

"Exactly, if they are not getting their supplies from the mainline, that means that they are getting them from this hill."

Lother exclaims as he cups his chin with his right hand. "I see, that explains the excess supplies on the hill." He nods then continues, "But if you are not able to spot them moving the supplies, that means that they have a secret passage of some sorts through the forest."

Caspar, seeing that Lothar has figured it out, answers immediately. "Yes, the path leaves from behind the hill and reaches the trench from behind, and I know where that path is."

Lothar smiles as he realizes what Caspar is pointing towards.

"Gentlemen, I believe our plan is set."

------------------------------------

The night was dark and quiet. It was midnight or some time close to that, the men did not care what time it was. The army was slowly and quietly marching through a path in the forest. They knew that the battle had already started, the 23rd started their distracting attack when the sun began to set.

The 23rd's role was to distract and tire out the enemy so that the prince's force can flank their position. At that time, the Oskiuum-Borpiden will be stuck between the prince's army and the 23rd.

As they were getting closer and closer, they started distinguishing the sound of small arms fire from the deafening explosions of artillery. The men start checking their rifles while raising them and getting ready to fire.

Soon, they pass through an unusually thick brush and stand there stunned. Not even thirty feet in front of them were men rushing while loading artillery and moving boxes of ammo. One boy, from the looks of it not even twenty yet, rushes back to get more ammo boxes for the front line. As he reaches the rear area, he sees that behind his friends, a group of unknown armed men, standing.

The boy drops his empty box on the ground as he started shouting in Borpiden. "ENEMY!!"

And on that shout, All hell broke loose. Men from the Urmacht army started firing indiscriminately. The surprised Borpiden tried to run away from the rain of bullets hunting them from behind, but it was too late.

The prince's army charges into the cover of the trench, hunting their escaping enemies down, be it by rifle or bayonet. Lothar and Caspar stand on the edge of the trench, watching as the enemy is being cut down like straw.

Lothar sighs at the terrible discipline of the Borpiden army as he says to Caspar. "And that Hahn is how the battle begins."
