Chapter 2 - Being human

I sat back in the old swivel chair of the library and examined this Aaron’s Facebook page. It didn't take me long to find the plethora of photos of Juan and Aaron together. It definitely was a good idea to swipe his wallet before I left.

As I scrolled through her Facebook page it was clear she was a grieving fiance. None of the posts mentioned her betrothed being dead, but missing. Apparently he'd been gone for a week now. So he definitely was freshly turned. I tried to stay as objective as possible with this as I scrolled through her page. After all, I needed to find out where she lived. Which couldn't have been far from here.

But still, from her posts, it was obvious she was deteriorating. I eventually got down to about two years ago, before she met Juan. She was a real downer, obviously jealous of the people around her, and definitely didn't have a lot of friends. But Juan seemed to brighten up her world. She started sharing happy images, changed her profile picture from a sad Bart Simpson photo to half of her face.

I got to see the timeline of her coming out of her shell and accepting herself. Only for it to all fall down and for her to fall back into old habits.

'I'm gonna return to Aaron!'

The vamps words echoed in my head. His panicked eyes, his desperation. There was no helping him, he was a monster. My grip grew harder on the mouse. It's not like I wanted to kill him…

I should've been faster.

"Those damn vamps…" I growled.

The wind suddenly picked up and my keyboard bounced. It knocked me back to reality and I took a breath to calm myself. I glanced over and saw an old lady staring at me. Her mouth was hung open and she had her glasses pulled down to look at me.

I nervously chuckled. "M-man, that A.C! Sure is pumping crazy in here."

I quickly grabbed my old apple phone and typed in all the relevant information. Yeah! I gotta go, gotta go!

It didn't take me long with a good GPS map of the area to figure out where she was. Her photos with Juan gave me a really good impression of her daily living. All the way down to the apartment complex she lived at. The better I get at my job the more creeped out I get by myself…

I stood in the woods outside of her apartment complex. Definitely didn't know what her apartment number was. But I knew she was at least on the second floor. While I waited I mulled over what exactly I was gonna say to her.

'Hey sorry, I totally killed the love of your life because he became a blood sucker. Also, can you tell me what you know about her fiance changing?'

I leaned back against the tree and stared up at the leaves. A gentle breeze came in, and I closed my eyes. Juan's Scarlet glare immediately filled my mind, then the sound of the little girl made when her corpse dropped to the floor. My heart started to race and I immediately opened my eyes.

I need to do something meaningful. Leave her with something so this doesn't end like it always ends with those damn Vamps. After all, I'm the one who ended his life. It's my responsibility to do something. He had enough humanity left to think about her. That should mean something.

But wha-

My train of thought came to an end as I heard a car pulling up. I jumped and looked over, finding a car I was familiar with from photos. Aaron came out of it, which I knew as her sister's car. Aaron started towards her apartment and panic started to set in. Crap! It's go time.

The car pulled away and I got up. Just as I did, a scream came from her apartment. I jumped and immediately ran towards the apartment. Once I got close, I commanded the air to go beneath my feet, then launched myself up to the ledge. I quickly got onto the deck and saw Aaron had her door open a crack. I peeked inside and saw Aaron stumbling back into her kitchen counter, while a very tall man stepped towards her.

Then, for a moment, I saw the Scarlet eyes that adorned his face. He smiled widely at Aaron and confirmed it by showing off his sharp jagged teeth. I spotted a knife on the kitchen table and focused on it, then I flicked my fingers forward and the knife stabbed into the Vamps eye. He screamed and I used the wind to blow open the door and I dashed at him. The Vamp stumbled back and I snatched the knife from his eye.

"You little twerp!" He yelled.

Before he could say anything else I dashed forward with the wind pushing me and I sliced through his throat. His head went flying into the air and dropped to the floor. A scarlet geyser erupted from his throat and covered my body. I looked over at Aaron, who stared at me in shock.

Unlawfully taken from Royal Road, this story should be reported if seen on Amazon.

"Ummm, hey, I'm Johnny." I said.

Aaron sat across from me while I cleaned my face with the towel she provided. The body of the Vamp I killed laid on the floor, slowly making a Scarlet river beneath him. I glanced back from the monster to Aaron. Who was nervously playing with her curly locks.

"U-umm, so your name is Johnny?" She asked.

"Yeah, it's ummm, nice to meet you." I said. "Lucky I was nearby."

"Y-yeah." She mumbled and glanced back up at me. "Why exactly were you nearby? Y-your not here to ask about Juan too, right?"

I leaned forward. "That guy asked you about Juan?"

She chewed on her lip and nodded. "Y-yeah, the g-guy said Juan and his Alpha were killed. Because someone sent a hunter. I would never do that to Juan…"

I took a breath. "Aaron, let me fully introduce myself." I said. "I'm Johnny, and I'm technically a Hunter. I go around the country and I kill monsters. And your Fiance Juan, was one of those monsters I killed."

Her eyes widened and tears immediately started to flow.

"Oh God it's true!" She cried and burried her face in her hands.

"I'm truly sorry for your loss."

She got up and ran over to me. She snatched my collar in her hands and shook me.

"He wouldn't have hurt me! He wouldn't have! He wouldn't have he wouldn't!"

Her tears fell down over my face like rain and I slowly reached up and gently moved my hands over her own and looked at her. For a moment I saw my sister's face, and the all too familiar expression of desperation and loss. Then came my mother's twisted smile.

"Aaron, I've seen parents turn on children, husbands attacking wives, friends ripping each other limb from limb." I sighed. "This isn't a movie, a monster, is a monster."

"You don't know that!"

"Trust me, I'm one of the few who does."

She looked back at me and for a moment. It seemed like she understood, or maybe she just accepted there wasn't a point to arguing. Regardless of the reason, she let go of me and sat back on the couch. Staring down at her feet.

"What, what was Juan like? Before…he passed." She mumbled.

I looked back at the corpse behind us.

"Unlike most Vamps. He was still fighting. He mentioned you and how getting back to Aaron was the most important thing to him."

She sniffled. "Tell me the truth, why did you kill him. I can take it."

I took a deep breath. Well, I guess…

"He was with the Alpha vampire. They usually take the freshly turned under their wing to feed. He was…trying to eat an eight year old girl.” Aaron squeaked at that. “I'm sure you'll hear about it soon. But a few days ago I was tracking the Alpha, looking to find their nest. And caught them trying to drain a family."

"A child…he was trying to kill a child?"

"Yeah…"

She took a hard breath. “Well,I'm grateful you were there." She mumbled. "Knowing Juan, he wouldn't have been able to live with that guilt."

"Yeah." I gripped my leg hard. "I can confirm he didn't kill that girl."

She nodded. "So, I know you said your name was Johnny. And that you're a Hunter. But what exactly are you? That knife trick earlier, and that whole anime slash you did."

"Yeah, I normally carry a Katana with me. But I left that at the planet fitness." I said with a nervous chuckle.

Which only ceased to make her look even more confused…

"U-ummm." She started.

"Right! More questions then before. Umm, I'm a Psychic." I said. "That knife trick was a form of telekinesis, and that ability with the wind was Aerokenesis. The wind helps me add more force and control and-"

"Stop, wait, so vampires and Psychics are real?" She asked.

I held out my hand towards her T.V remote and slowly lifted it up.

"Yeah, and whole lot more." I added. "Vamps are just the most toxic kind of parasite in the world."

"I see…" She mumbled.

"So, I had a question for you. Juan, when did you notice him changing?" I asked. "Anybody he met that seemed off?"

She looked to the side and started playing with her hair again.

"What're you gonna do….if I tell you?" She asked.

"Well, seeing as one of them came after you. I'd go there and try to stop them. Make sure they don't get you, and make sure that they don't hurt someone else again. Like how they hurt Juan."

She sniffled again and some tears started to run down her face.

"Juan and I had an argument." She said and tried to compose herself more. "It was about his diet and lack of exercise. His family all had diabetes and I was trying to help him make sure he didn't follow that trend and umm. He said he met someone who was willing to offer him a quick fix…I should've known. It's my fault."

"It's not your fault. It's the vampires fault." I said and leaned forward.

"But if I just accepted him for what he was. Maybe he wouldn't have done something so reckless!”

"We all are responsible for our own actions, Aaron. You wanted him to be better. He chose to take another route, one that you weren't pushing him towards. Be honest, if he ended up getting diabetes you wouldn't have been happy with yourself either, would you?"

"No! But still he'd-"

"There's no promise to life. You don't know if that wouldn't saved him. You did what you did because you cared. I was there for his last words, he didn't curse you. He loved you. I don't think he'd want you to fall in despair."

"But what I am I gonna do without him?" She mumbled.

"Live." I said simply. "It's the hardest thing to ask. But you need to live."

She bit her lip and started to cry again. Then she reached into her pocket and pulled out her phone.

"Here." She held out her phone to me and showed me an address. "He sent me this before he left."

I took her phone and saw it was text messages between her and him.

'Hey, my little Crow! This is where me and the fitness Guru are going! Don't be to worried. He said it'll just be a week or two.' Juan texted, followed by the address.

I took out my phone and copied the address down.

"Thank you so much for this."

"Johnny, how old are you exactly?"

"Oh, sixteen." I said.

"You're only sixteen?" She mumbled.

"Yup."

"How long have you been doing this?"

"Since I was thirteen? I guess."

She sniffled again. "What happened to get you to start doing this? If you don't mind me asking."

"It's not important really. But I've lost a lot to these things, family, friends." I sighed. "I was in a orphanage for awhile. But, it felt wrong just sitting back and pretending, ya know? Like someone else wasn't dying while I sat back and played video games. And when I started really noticing my powers, I decided that was a sign."

"That's really mature of you. I can't imagine….taking a life." She sighed. "I don't know if I could do it."

I stood up. "Don't do it. Let me. After all my hands are already dirty. I'm really sorry about Juan. He didn't want this, and I'm sorry you lost someone you love. I'll do everything in my power to make sure this doesn't happen to anyone else."

"J-johnny, what should I do." She pointed to the body. "If they come back?"

"You should move for awhile. Normally they don't send more then one person. So it'll be a bit till they really care to show interest in you again. So hopefully I'll be done with the nest before then." I said and stretched. "In the mean time. You should call the cops and stay with a friend, just in case."

"Won't the cops, find you?" She asked.

"Nah." I held up my boots, showing off.the duck taped bottoms. "I'll steal the camera footage from around her, clean up my physical evidence, and make my grand escape like I usually do. Worse case scenario I steal an officer's keys again and erase my file."

"You've already been arrested?"

"I've learned through trial and error." I said and headed to the door. "And Aaron remember, things….things may look bad. Because things won't ever be the same. And from what I've learned, you can't live your life waiting for things to go back to the way they were. Or live off someone else to make you happy. It won't be a easy journey. But try to find a new future. Juan loved you, you were his last thoughts. Remember that."

She took a heavy breath and nodded. "Thank you, Johnny. Please, kill those bastards for me."

I smiled and nodded. "Don't worry, I'm gonna Zero those demons."

Alright Ohio, get ready. The Belmont is coming.
