Silara

True to her nature and gift, without ever being summoned or called for, Silara, seer of the sea emerged….

As many Piscalian folk are, Silara, was a roaming seafarer. She commanded a well known and formidable ship called Calons Star, the namesake of Silara’s drake companion. The ship boasted four masts, two hulls, and enough gnomish cannons and magical weapons to fight off a small fleet alone. On the day of three wars, as it came to be called, Silara and her crew fought off what they thought was an average raiding party. After decimating the single ship they investigated the wreckage. Silaras first mate, another formidable Piscalian, Talrei, dove off the ship without a word from his captain. Talrei swam to one of the bodies that floated from the wreckage and rolled over the corpse to reveal what Silara had already come to suspect due to her well known talent of foresight. A bloody and mangled but still very obvious korrigan corpse.

Looking back at his captain Talrei asked, “What does it mean captain?!” Before she could answer, Calon, her small teal colored drake companion, flew past her shoulder over Talrei to what they had not seen, in the night, among the wreckage. Standing on a larger piece of what was left of the ship, a robed figure had summoned several dark, but still glowing, magical circles around him. His purpose was never brought to light because as he attempted the ritual Calon swooped down upon the figure. Spreading his blue wings, the dragon began to faintly glow from within. Then, with a jet of brilliant blue flame, he incinerated the figure leaving nothing but ash and a smoldering piece of destitute ship.

Talrei climbed up from a hatch on the lower deck and came to stand next to Silara to speak in a hushed voice. “What are these creatures doing on our seas?” In reply, as Calon landed on a deck nearby, she began shouting orders. “Full sail and bring us the wind!” Functioning as only a well crewed vessel could, the sailors began scurrying here and there on the massive ship. They dropped canvas sails marked with the captain's emblem (a wave with a small dragon ahead of the curl) the ship began to pick up speed. Glowing green from behind each of the two massive pontoons a few magic seals shifted and rotated on their axis. At this the ship began to speed up lifting itself from the waves to smoothly skip across the tops at a far greater speed.

Captain Silara stood in her cabin over a map of the Scythian sea, with a compass and a few other mapping tools at hand, and she charted the path. “If we keep up our usual speed we’ll be but 2 days fom Limuna, maybe one if we happen to catch the currents through here.” Silara said, almost to herself. Nodding in agreement Talrei looked at the map and said, “I know that ship wasn’t a good sign but what’s the rush to return home, captain?” he started then continued. “Limuna is well defended. Even if a fleet of those pathetic mongrels came for them what good would it do? Korrigan barely can swim on a good day. Never mind taking to the streets of Limuna.”

Talrei looked up and her eyes had gone vacant and white. She then spoke in a voice not her own and she muttered, “A gale of a thousand winds can only be stopped by the wings of the one that would ride them.” The look obviously vanished from her eyes and she shook her head returning to her normal self. “Talrei. Get us to Limuna. Our little Calon must meet his destiny.”

The Star, through rain and shine battered its way South and East from the convergence of the two seas where the water changes from blue to green. They passed a dozen other ships and a few islands here and there but the ship sped along unrelenting. Every few hours the Piscalian magi who powered the spells on the aft of the ship had to be swapped out due to exhaustion. As they reached the end of the second day, the sun was just beginning to set off the starboard bow. And, as though she knew without looking, the captain took the helm from her first mate. “We have arrived ladies and gentlemen! Battle stations!” Silara barked to her crew.

Like a machine, guns erupted from hatches across both sides of the dual hulled vessel. Then, with a look in her eye two large barrels emerged from between the hulls. As they approached the city, before they saw it, the entire crew felt it. Spanning a distance that should have been just out of their sight, even from the crows nest, the crew spotted a torrent of water. It was ten miles from the ports of Limuna, a magical funnel of water flowing the wrong direction stood on the horizon threatening the whole city and every ship in the water that was engaged in fierce battle.

The city of Limuna was wholly underwater but due to a series of ancient spells and power it stood a mile tall above the natural water line. In her mind Silara knew, should this force of unnatural water and wind be uncontested. The entire city of Limuna would be decimated along with all of the spells that held the cylinder of water intact. Spanning a space of 5 miles in diameter. The destruction of their city would cause an innumerable death count. More than that, she knew from her innate sense that, should she do nothing, the power of her city would be taken to aid evil.

Sailing towards what Silara felt was certain doom she sped her ship past the countless other vessels of all manner and size. Some were fleeing civilians simply caught in the fray. Others were that of the defending Piscalian, her seafolk kin, and yet others were cursed ragged looking Korrigan vessels. Of what make and origin Silara and her crew knew not. Which was terribly strange as they had sailed every sea known to the inhabitants of Sacalia and its surrounding waters.

Yelling orders at her crew and first mate, Silara said, “turrets open fire at will! Main cannons set sights on that big ship dead center in front of us.” In response, wind and rain whipping at her crew, Talrei strutted up and down the decks relaying orders and aiding the crew where needed. As his captain continued to pilot the vessel expertly through the immense sea battle raging around them. It was as though the Star was untouchable. It laid down innumerable cannon blasts across the enemy fleet and every now and then between tacks a deafening roar could be heard above all else. The main cannons each sprouted red magical circles and streaks of fire would illuminate the area surrounding the ship. Each shot plowed into the massive ship like they were magnetically drawn to it.

Talrei joined Silara at the helm and asked, “captain, what’s your plan, I don’t think we can take that ship on our own! It’s too damn big! I’ve never seen anything like it.” As though she had not a care in the world she looked over at him with a grin on her face and said, “we’re going to ram it! Calon and I will be stepping off soon. I leave it all to you Talrei. It’s crucial you spear her right through the middle. And once you do use the main cannons to blast a hole in that wall of water.” Before he could say a word in response two things happened that none could explain.

Silara turned from the helm and she saw what she knew in her heart was coming. Calon, her small blue drake companion who was sitting on the rail behind her, had a visitor. Glowing in a faint pinkish ethereal light, about a foot long, with glittering rainbow scales and fragile looking fairy like wings. It was none other than a spriggen sprite. It floated just ahead of Calons snout hovering there as if the wind and rain didn’t bother it one bit. It shook its petit body ever so gently and the sprite seemed to shed glitter onto the small drake. Silara shouted back to her first mate as she stepped on the rear railing and jumped high into the air. “The fates have blessed us today!” she yelled as she was airborne in a spectacular flip. Calon, with a poof of smoke and a little fire engulfing him from his own maw, became five times his previous size. As he spread his newfound massive wings Silara landed gingerly on his back and they floated off the deck backwards into the air. The two Piscalian magi propelling the ship seemed completely unphased by this turn of events.

He flapped his mighty wings and he was, without effort, above the ship and let out an ear splitting and screeching roar. They flew higher and higher into the air, every so often swooping down upon one of the mottled looking ships to spew fire on its unsuspecting crew. As she rode the drake she watched the ship, Calons Star, a gleaming beacon of destruction, begin to approach the massive flagship of the Korrigan fleet.

As it skipped across the water the two ships belted each other with a barrage of cannon fodder. The giant flagship trying desperately to decimate the Star as it plowed full speed into it. They came to a shuddering halt. The Pisalian crew and Korrigan raiders alike were thrown from their feet. Gaining their bearings, the crew of Calons Star got to their feet and began hurling spears, spells, and cannon fire at anything they could. As commanded they fired the two massive cannons straight through the hull of the vesel. A crack and groan could be heard by both crews. Talrei retook his position at the helm and gave two more orders. To which the crew responded by continuing with their barrage of fire from each side of the vessel. Adding his own magical power to that of the two wind mages behind him. The green glow increased and the ship began forcing its way in between the two halves of the Korrigan ship.

With a hefty groan and a shower of splinters the ship cracked in two. At this time he saw it. A circle of glowing black and blue power on the base of the massive cyclone. From the ship's helm he took aim and gave the command to fire the two main cannons again. In a flash of red fire and blue scales the cannons erupted and like a blur the now massive dragon raced past the two entangled ships.

When the cannons hit the black and blue magical seal, for a brief moment, a bright area of daylight shon through the wall of water. At the same instant Calon and his rider shot through the hole into the center of the water spout. In a shower of water and wind the dragon and rider came out the other side. Calon spread his wings and the two rocketed towards the first thing that caught their eye. Floating dead center in the eye of the storm bathed in perfect sunlight and spouting small bolts of lightning. There he stood on a floating island of around ten meters around. A man of at least seven feet, shirtless, and wearing a savage looking blade. As they approached Calon ducked, weaved, and spiraled his body nearly throwing Silara from her perch. The man was surrounded in spell weaving circles of various colors and sizes, shot lightning, and fire at them to dissuade their advances. Jeering both to her mount and the shirtless man Silara said, “he looks distracted! Lets give him something to really worry about!”

They shot past the small rocky island into the air above and both Calon and Silara sprouted magical circles all around them. Gusts of wind and spouts of water came from Silara as she leapt from her steeds back; they slashed towards the man in four different directions and struck. With no more than a thought he raised blocks of earth from his sides to deflect each assault. Only at the last second did he draw his blade to counter Silara’s double ended swallow glaive as she came screaming on top of him for a strike. They met blades mid air as she twisted and parried around to land near him. Then coming from below she struck next and they locked blades. He sneered and didn’t seem to have even a tiny look of concern on his face at all. Obviously coming at him with everything she had they stood there. It was oddly silent around them and she whispered to him, “who are you and why do you assault my city!?”

He pushed her back with ease and a glint of fire magic in his eye. In response several black circles formed near him. Then he said, with apparent calm on his face, “I shall be driven into your home to take the power it holds and destroy its people from within it. For I am Ark Lafoaita, the forsworn. He who shall anchor darkness unto light and overturn your world. The stars themselves will collapse upon you to bring an era of darkness and Aumatia will rule for an eternity with me at his side.”

As he was finishing his brief speech Silara looked in disbelief at him. But, at that moment the power took her by force. Her eyes glazed over and the world around her drifted out of sight. Her vision showed her in the span of seconds what felt like an eternity. As if she was a star she streamed away from the point where she stood. Away from the planet past the clouds getting a full view of everything that happened below her as she continued outward. A full view of the planet before she continued past the two moons of their world. But it didn’t stop there, she passed the next planet nearest to theirs and so past other celestial bodies. Until she reached a comet passing through the solar system.

Here in the vastness of space she saw a glowing core of amber with a bieng inside. Its shape was indiscernible but within she saw a beating heart and felt nothing but molevence. Dark celestial energy poured from it to find its home directly next to her own body in the form of Ark. The man that stood before her. Her vision faded from the skies and moved to one with that man standing on a cliff side. Waves were crashing all around him and magical circles of many forms above him as well as the sky dimming red with that very same celestial body threatening to come to earth.

Her vision began returning and Silara stood there dumbfounded at the revelation her talent had brought her. Ark having noticed his chance proceeded to try to finish his massive whirlwind spell that he’d been working on. He held his hand in the air feeling that he’d succeeded in his goal that day. He stood there smug in his victory. At this point the cyclone was but a mile from the magical pillar of water that was Limuna city. Not knowing what to do Calon saw the imminent danger and tucked his wings in to dive straight for the two, screeching in anger.

Hearing the screech from above, Silara broke from her inactivity. She looked up and saw exactly what was about to happen. Calon opened his ferocious maw and began to loose a jet of terrifying flames. What neither the dragon nor Ark expected was the spell that Silara had added into her partner's action. Combining the flames he produced with her wind magic spell caused an effect only Silara could have predicted. The flames he produced balled up rotating and continuing to grow as the dragon poured his breath into it. Until she released it. Letting go of the magical control, she turned, and jumped from the platform.

Simultaneously Calon broke off his assault spreading his wings a little and peeling off towards where she had jumped from the platform. The massive ball had compacted and formed into an orange ball of untold strength and power. Colliding with the floating mass it stopped and all that could be seen was a blinding ball of plasma. Like a small sun within the space it couldn’t be looked at. So bright, in fact, there were reports of the light increasing all across the southeast regions of Sacalia as well as any part of the Sythian sea. The spinning hurricane collapsed and until a few years later none knew what happened to the tall Kindal man that called himself Ark Lafoatia.
