Chapter 18 - World Spirit

"Yes, I will not," The voice spoke, coming from everywhere and nowhere.

They both froze, looking around and trying to pinpoint where the voice came from, but they didn't find anything.

"I am here, "The voice spoke again, this time coming from their back.

"Ahhhhh!" Keilan screamed, jumping on Damien who out of reflex caught him in a princess style.

Damien looked at the grown man in his arms, raising an eyebrow and a smile beginning to tug on his lips.

"Shut up," Keilan muttered, pushing Damien off and stepping back on his feet, Damien chuckled.

Turning back to the apparition in front of them, it was shaped like a miniature planet, with four continents surrounded by large bodies of water.

"You're the world spirit," Damien said. Realisation dawning.

"Very astute," The world spirit said. "You can call me Ra,"

"Your name is Ra? I didn't know World Spirits had names. Did you choose it? Or were you born with it?" Keilan asked.

"As you might know, we world spirits are innate beings. We are born to power. The youngest of us are born at the ranks of spirit kings while the greatest can become celestials. We choose our names at birth. Till we reach the rank of celestial, our names only contain two syllables. Reaching the celestial rank gives us the privilege of three-syllable names," Ra said.

"You could have just said that at the beginning instead of all the lecture," Keilan murmured, earning him a kick on the knee from Damien.

"I've never heard of a world spirit appearing physically before," Damien said. Gesturing at the apparition.

"We don't usually appear physically, as we don't always see a use for it, but there are special circumstances that require physical attendance," it said.

"Like those things?" Damien said. Looking at the two floating objects

"Yes, like those things" Ra confirmed.

"So, what are they?" Damien asked.

"Things that shouldn't have been found on my body in the first place," The world spirit said.

"Then why are they still here? From what we've learned of world spirits, you don't allow anything that could harm you anywhere near your bodies," Keilan said.

"When these objects crashed onto my body, I was so wounded that I would have blasted this whole continent into space just to save the rest of my body. It would have weakened me greatly to have a part of myself destroyed like that, but I would have done it just to save the rest of my body from the destruction that these objects wrought on this continent. The whole continent right now is like those itches you mortals get. But the difference is that mine won't go away," Ra said.

The narrative has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the infringement.

"Then get rid of them," Keilan said, earning a glare from Damien.

"I can't, I made a promise," Ra said.

They both quieted at that. It was unheard of for a world spirit to make a promise to keep something which was in itself, a danger to the world spirit. No world spirit would do that.

"To whom?" Damien said. Who would make a world spirit keep a promise?

"A fellow ascendant, one much more powerful than myself," Ra said. "The leader of this destroyed city did tell you about an ascendant when he explained about the origin of the city,"

Damien nodded. Not surprised that the world spirit was aware of his conversation with chosen Ymal.

"I was given protection enough to counteract the objects' destructive natures from spreading," Ra continued, a glowing blue line appearing and pointing to the runes on the floor. "The protection should have lasted a few thousand years, just until the rightful owner came to claim them,"

"Rightful owner?" Damien asked.

"Yes, these objects didn't just crash onto me by mistake," Ra said. An undercurrent of anger in its voice.

"They were directed," Damien completed. Coming to a conclusion.

"Yes, a few years before you appeared," Ra said.

Damien and Keilan looked at each other. Shock plain on their faces at what the world spirit was implying.

Over the years, Damien had come up with different theories pertaining to his origin. All of them had been disproved. This was the latest in a round of leads that he had tried, and he was afraid to hope.

"How are you sure they were meant for me?" Damien asked. Mind still swirling at what the world spirit implied.

"Instead of explaining," It pointed to a rune that was still intact. Studying it, Damien learned that the rune was a lock, and only a unique form of energy could open it. "Why don't you try your energy on the lock,"

"What if it doesn't work?" Keilan asked. Worry showing on his face and in his voice.

"Then I'll have to sacrifice a part of myself and blast this whole continent into orbit. I would not allow a threat like this to continue staying on my body," Ra said.

"Wait," Keilan said. "What of the massive energy building inside there," He pointed at the runes which were being eroded as they spoke. "That level of energy could seriously injure you or worse, kill you."

Having decided. Damien spoke."I won't know until I try,"

Walking closer. He could feel the massive energy building up inside the rune ward, enough to completely level this city and the surrounding areas in mere moments.

Studying the objects. One was a tiny male figurine, inches tall, completely in grey colour, while the other was a dark purple orb. Only one of them was emitting the massive energy, the figurine.

With anticipation, he summoned energy from deep within himself, he channelled it in strands towards the rune. The moment his energy strand touched the single rune, the whole circle lit up, lighting the whole room in a blinding silver colour which then died down, revealing unmarred floor where the rune used to be.

Grey energy blasted out in a wave, destroying everything in its path. Damien was already turning to run when his whole body froze up, gravity pressing down on him. Anger burned within him as he tried to teleport, but another will cancel his working before it even formed. With his senses, he could see Keilan, also frozen with his face in a mask of fury and his hands outstretched towards the apparition that was the world spirit.

The energy wave kept approaching, a wall of instant death that would obliterate all in its path. Putting terror into Damien of the approaching death.

When the energy struck him, it froze in its path. Cold filled his body as something scanned him, searching deep within his soul as if looking for something.

It seemed to have found what it was looking for because the cold feeling retreated, and the energy wave began reversing until it converged on the figurine, with the figurine swallowing the energy like a whirlpool, increasing the energy it emitted.

The figurine then disappeared, appearing an inch from Damien's body. It floated in front of him for half a second before it sank into his body, a piece of him that he didn't know was missing became complete.

[Oh, hello Damien, nice to finally meet you,] Something said into his mind.

Damien couldn't reply as his vision faded, pushing him into unconsciousness.
