Chapter 1.3 - Prologue (Frigg)

Perspective

Frigg

A God’s domain is an odd thing.

If anything, a domain is not a power, but more of just a way that a God can influence the environment.

And for mine, it simply… Brings people to where they would wish to be.

It is a funny thing, at times; The most common answer for what people see here is a garden. The immortal warriors of Valhalla, would feel most comfortable in a garden, away from the endless bloodshed that makes up their life.

And for me?

It is a clearing, in a tranquil forest.

It seems that the less… Defined, this place is, the more someone wants. This clearing is a blank slate, that you could make into anything. Is that not beautiful in itself?

And yet, aside from that tangent, I sit here for a reason.

I am awaiting a soul. A human who I have been told to take after death.

But as I watch, I am only… Disappointed, and horrified.

This human lives in a death trap of her own making. A ‘lab’, filled with chemicals that could kill someone in minutes, only given the bare minimum of safety seen in that world.

Not only that, but I see the reason why I have been called now.

Some form of law enforcement is breaking into the human’s lab.

I… Pity this human, as much as I fear her. She is not in her right mind, and never received any help for it. Only viewed as, what humans would call a ‘genius’.

I can already tell why this human was seen as a person of interest to take.

A weapon. When someone can so efficiently weaponize the natural elements of nature, they are dangerous. She is to be a pawn, for us.

I disagree.

Horror sets in, as one of them takes a vial out of the pocket of the ‘chemist’’s coat. Don’t tell me..?

It drops to the ground, and I can only see the destruction of everything within.

The human that I am soon to meet, is responsible for five deaths besides her own, incidentally or not.

I… Can’t believe it.

In a way, it is a miracle that such a thing has not happened before, with this human, Lavender’s, carelessness.

But watching it is something else entirely.

As the human appears in my domain, her soul ripped from Earth’s natural cycle, I can not bring myself to even put on a fake smile, looking down at her.

Soon, she opens her eyes, looking over me. I suppose that a deity is a rather shocking sight, after someone dies.

“…Hey. Who are you?” The scientist finally speaks up, to ask who I am. It would be amusing, in any other situation.

A chair appears in the clearing, behind the woman. “Ah, right. Have a seat.” She stands up, casually sitting down. “I’m… Frigg.” I state my name soon after, and she shows no signs of recognition. Not that it matters much.

The human introduces herself, too. “Lavender, but you can call me…” The chemist winks. “Lav.” If that was an attempt at flirting, it was a terrible one. “I am aware of who you are, Ms. Wisteria.” I shoot that down as fast as possible through formality.

“Then-“ Before she can get started, I clear my throat. “I will get to the point. You have been… Chosen, to be… Reincarnated, for a lack of a better term.” I tell a half-truth. She was chosen, but I’m… Sending her to another destination. For the better of everyone. “Not that I know why…” I mutter at the end, but she seems to have heard. A shame.

She stays in thought for a while, but… I would rather not linger here too long. “…And you will be doing so with a guide, in a new world. I wish you the best.” Despite everything… It’s true.

I want to see her grow as a person, even if I will not be able to watch her, where she is going.

“Eh? Where-“ It’s rude, but I cut off the scientist by sending her elsewhere.

To a place known as Arde.

After… The incident, no God is able to intervene in that world, save for sending others in.

It’s the best place she could be, to avoid ‘our’ interference.

A crow lands near me, answering my will. I’ll need to send someone else, as well. And I have just the person in mind.

I send the crow to go down Valhalla’s halls with a short message, seeking a certain Valkyrie.

Kàra… She did not become a Valkyrie willingly, and while few have noticed, I have. That one detests the Gods. To her, following our whims is just torment.

So… Whether the human does well on Arde or not, I wish for Kàra to at least thrive there.

A golden-haired Valkyrie enters the domain soon after, her golden and white armor being audible long before she’s seen. She only turns to me the moment she enters, to the point.

She once told me that this place resembles a garden, to her… I suppose she has seen enough strife.

“Ah, Kàra, you’re quite punctual.” I give her a genuine smile. I’m glad to have this chance to help, at the very least.

“Only as much as I need to be.” How humble. “What is the task, this time?” As expected, right to business, then.

I lay it out clearly. “I… Sent a human to another world. Arde.” I add, to no recognition. “But, I can’t have her there without a guardian.”

She raises her eyebrow, suspicious. “There has to be more to it than that.”

I sigh. “The human in question is… Troublesome. Dangerous, not in her right mind. This task will take years at minimum, maybe decades or more.” She only seems more suspicious as I elaborate, and… She’s growing annoyed. “And a lot of it will be… Replacing an absent moral compass.”

“…So, to put it simply, the Æsir are trying to get me out of the way-“ As expected, that’s where her suspicions lie. But I cut her off there. “No. This time, it’s… All me. I am aware that you hate our… Machinations, and this is just… Think of it as me giving you a vacation. This place will have many stronger than you, but… It’ll have the freedom you wish for.”

She is left speechless, for a time. And I blame her not, given everything. Finally, she speaks up again, after a sigh. “Then… Thank you.”

I give her a warm smile. “It’s only what I should do.” I mirror her own words. I… hope we don’t meet again. It’s for the best if you stay free there.”

And she nods her head, ready to leave.

I have sent two people to Arde on this day, a place where Gods cannot interfere under threat of from what is within.

Two are out of my hands, out of the hands of my pantheon.

And I am happy. For both of them, it is better this way.

May they live long lives, free of the Gods’ politics.
