A scarf for very cold weather

A scarf for very cold weather

I still remember when it began to snow; I enjoyed walking hand in hand with Samantha, the girl I used to play with as a child. I had just turned thirteen, and she was a year older than me. It had been a week since winter started, and now that I was visiting her house, she didn't even give me time to speak before she threw herself into my arms.

BOOOM!

I hugged her, but the floor was so slippery that we ended up falling. I tried to get up quickly, but I was still a little confused by the blow. I only heard a scream followed by...

"Little brat, be more careful!"

Upon hearing her voice, I recognized who it was. I just gave a little smile and didn't say anything more. Her mom had gone out, and they started asking me if I wanted to go to Samantha's grandma's house. She couldn't accompany us because the business would be left alone. I quickly agreed, and we were already leaving when she told me to wait.

It didn't take long for her to give each of us two red scarves and two black coats, according to her, so we could distinguish ourselves in the snow and not die of cold.

We went out, each with a basket of bread in a basket. While we were chatting, I asked her why her grandma didn't live with them.

She gave me a simple answer.

"She is sick."

It seemed like she didn't want to talk about it. We started walking more, but the snow covered our path. I never knew when someone started following us or from where, only that it was strange that there was more snow than usual. Usually, there were always people opening the way in the mornings, but that day there was no one. Sami also noticed it and told me to hurry up; if we stayed longer, we could get sick.

We had only taken a few steps when a flock of birds scattered among the trees. Something had scared them, but we still didn't know what, and when I turned to look at Sami, I just saw her with her mouth open, trying to cover it and not make any noise.

I didn't have time to react, and she had already clung to me completely. On other occasions, I would have laughed at her or even hugged her more, but this time I saw that a huge bear was coming after us. I grabbed her hand, and we started running. She told me that as long as we could reach that big black tree, it wouldn't be long before we reached her grandma's house.

It was getting closer and closer to catching up with us, and in a desperate attempt, I threw the basket of bread with everything I had. It didn't harm the bear, but it stopped to eat what was inside.

We hid behind some bushes as we crawled to avoid drawing too much attention and to get out of sight. I could already see the cabin where her grandma stayed, but something wasn't right... I just felt that the more we advanced, the more fearful I became. This time, it was me who grabbed Sami's hand and tried to calm down a bit, saying that we had already arrived.

We entered the house, but there was no one, just complete silence. We started calling out for her, but no one responded. As I closed the door, I asked if I could light the fireplace, only to receive a somewhat...

"You only care about yourself, hurry, help me find her."

Although it bothered me a bit, I still helped her, and when we reached her bedroom, there was nothing, the whole cabin was empty. We went to the kitchen, but everything was in disarray, even her clothes were strewn on the floor. Both of us became mute, and the more I said something, the angrier she got, even starting to irritate me too.

We went out to the patio, and this time Sami couldn't hold back any longer and fell to her knees, I saw tears streaming down her face as she tried to cover it with her hands, shouting...

"Why! Why! Why!"

Around a well, there were bloodstains, but what left me speechless was seeing that scene where the person we were looking for was at the bottom without any sign of movement. I wanted to confirm who it was, but as I looked at Sami, all I could do was sigh and embrace her.

I had nothing to say, and as she kept asking me questions in my head, I saw a large wolf with silver hair in front of me, but its mouth was covered in blood. With Sami by my side, I could only hold onto her as she refused to move away and scream, until I received a slap, I didn't even feel it, I just worried that she wouldn't get into the house, everything was happening so fast, and when I tried to explain, several wolves attacked us.

With Sami unwilling to leave, I just threw her into the cabin, falling onto the wood. I tried to reach her, but within a few seconds, I could only feel my eyes closing again and again, my vision blurred, and I saw Sami trying to get me inside while her tears fell again.

I didn't know how Sami saved me that day, I just remember that as soon as I woke up, I saw small hands caressing my face with blood everywhere, as she whispered softly.

"With feats for our lives today, I am grateful, my love for you I will never let be short-lived, for today I will make it evident."

As I saw her body covered in blood, she continued to scare me.
